Development of Earth/Climate System models in China:A Review from the Coupled model Intercomparison Project Perspective

The development of coupled earth/climate system models in China over the past 20 years is reviewed, including a comparison with other international models that participated in the Coupled model Intercom- parison Project （CMIP） from phase 1 （CMIP1） to phase 4 （CMIP4）. The Chinese contribution to CMIP is summarized, and the major achievements from CMIP1 to CMIP3 are listed as a reference for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese models. After a description of CMIP5 experiments, the five Chinese models that participated in CMIP5 are then introduced. Furthermore, following a review of the current status of international model development, both the challenges and opportunities for the Chinese climate modeling community are discussed. The development of high-resolution climate models, earth system mod- els, and improvements in atmospheric and oceanic general circulation models, which are core components of earth/climate system models, are highlighted. To guarantee the sustainable development of climate system models in China, the need for national-level coordination is discussed, along with a list of the main compo- nents and supporting elements identified by the US National Strategy for Advancing Climate modeling.

A non-uniform grid approach for high-resolution flood inundation simulation based on GPUs

In view of the frequent occurrence of floods due to climate change, and the fact that a large calculation domain, with complex land types, is required for solving the problem of the flood simulations, this paper proposes an optimized non-uniform grid model combined with a high-resolution model based on the graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration to simulate the surface water flow process. For the grid division, the topographic gradient change is taken as the control variable and different optimization criteria are designed according to different land types. In the numerical model, the Godunov-type method is adopted for the spatial discretization, the TVD-MUSUL and Runge-Kutta methods are used to improve the model’s spatial and temporal calculation accuracies, and the simulation time is reduced by leveraging the GPU acceleration. The model is applied to ideal and actual case studies. The results show that the numerical model based on a non-uniform grid enjoys a good stability. In the simulation of the urban inundation, approximately 40%–50% of the urban average topographic gradient change to be covered is taken as the threshold for the non-uniform grid division, and the calculation efficiency and accuracy can be optimized. In this case, the calculation efficiency of the non-uniform grid based on the optimized parameters is 2–3 times of that of the uniform grid, and the approach can be adopted for the actual flood simulation in large-scale areas.

A Comparison Study of Tropical Pacific Ocean State Estimation:Low-resolution Assimilation ***-resolution Simulation

A comparison study is performed to contrast the improvements in the tropical Pacific oceanic state of a low-resolution model respectively via data assimilation and by an increase in horizontal resolution. A low resolution model (LR) (1°lat by 2°lon) and a high-resolution model (HR) (0.5°lat by 0.5°lon) are employed for the comparison. The authors perform 20-yr numerical experiments and analyze the annual mean fields of temperature and salinity. The results indicate that the low-resolution model with data assimilation behaves better than the high-resolution model in the estimation of ocean large-scale features. From 1990 to 2000, the average of HR's RMSE (root-mean-square error) relative to independent Tropical Atmosphere Ocean project (TAO) mooring data at randomly selected points is 0.97℃ compared to a RMSE of 0.56℃ for LR with temperature assimilation. Moreover, the LR with data assimilation is more frugal in computation. Although there is room to improve the high-resolution model, the low-resolution model with data assimilation may be an advisable choice in achieving a more realistic large-scale state of the ocean at the limited level of information provided by the current observational system.
