Impacts of high Field magnetic fields on Processing of Selected Materials

Various composite conductors and reinforcement materials are used for high field magnets in the USA National high magnetic Field Laboratory.Typical composite conductors are Cu based metal-metal composites,whereas most of reinforcement materials have faced-center-cubic matrix and relatively low ductile-to-brittle transformation temperatures so they can perform at cryogenic temperatures.During the operation of the magnets,the mechanical stresses,magnetic fields and other extreme environments are imposed to the materials and materials are 'processed' during the service of the magnets.For instance,the conductors in the magnets are likely to experience higher temperatures than ambient during the operations if the electrical current density for producing high field is sufficiently high.Some of the conductors are fabricated by cold rolling or drawing that introduces lattice distortions and high densities of interfaces in unit volume.high temperature and high field exposure of the conductor may affect the characteristics of the lattice distortions and the interfaces.The lattice distortion and density of the interface affects the mechanical properties of the conductors,such as the tensile and yield strength,as well as the electric conductivity of the composites.Therefore,the materials after service are expected to have different properties compared to as-received conditions.The first portion of our paper will focus on relationship between the service and processing of the magnet materials in high field magnets.The high magnetic field can be used directly to process materials.In some cases,the material properties can be improved by more than 50%if the processing is undertaken in the high magnetic field.The improvement is due to the microstructure changes induced by high magnetic fields.Understanding the behaviors of the materials after they are exposed to high magnetic fields helps us to make good use of the high field processing approach efficiently to fabricate better materials,particularly when the magnetic fields are s

A new approach to target development for laboratory astrophysics experiments at high-power laser facilities is presented.With the dawn of high-power lasers,laboratory astrophysics has emerged as a field,bringing insight into physical processes in astrophysical objects,such as the formation of stars.An important factor for success in these experiments is targetry.To date,targets have mainly relied on expensive and challenging microfabrication methods.The design presented incorporates replaceable machined parts that assemble into a structure that defines the experimental geometry.This can make targets cheaper and faster to manufacture,while maintaining robustness and reproducibility.The platform is intended for experiments on plasma flows,but it is flexible and may be adapted to the constraints of other experimental setups.Examples of targets used in experimental campaigns are shown,including a design for insertion in a high magnetic field coil.Experimental results are included,demonstrating the performance of the targets.

Interface profile evolution between binary immiscible fluids induced by high magnetic field gradients

A mechanical analysis is done to find the evolution of the interface profile between binary immiscible fluids induced by a three-dimensional orthogonal magnetic field gradient.In the experiments,the changes of the interface profile between four groups of binary immiscible fluids are investigated under the same horizontal magnetic field gradients.The binary immiscible fluids are made of benzene and other liquids,like CuSO4,Fecl3,FeSO4 or Cucl2 aqueous solutions.In addition,the interface profile between the benzene and CuSO4 aqueous solution is examined under different horizontal magnetic field gradients.The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical analysis.This study explains the enhanced Moses effect from a mechanics standpoint.Furthermore,a new method for susceptibility measurement is proposed based on this enhanced Moses effect.

The Laboratoire National des Champs Magn(?)tiques Intenses(LNCMI) is the CNRS French National high magnetic Field Facility associated with three universities:Joseph Fourier in Grenoble,Paul Sabatier and INSA in Toulouse.It delivers to researchers direct current high magnetic field up to 35 teslas in 34 mm in Grenoble and pulsed field up to 80 T in Toulouse.Developments of new high field magnets and associated instrumentations are user oriented. These developments(highly homogeneous magnets,magnets for diffraction studies,high field gradient magnet...) are impulsed by different user communities.Since a few years,magneto-science is attracting new users for the study of high field effects on physical,chemical and biological processes such as electrochemistry,metallurgy,nanostructuration, implying new methodologies and new experimental developments such as high temperature environment up to 1600 K.A survey of these developments is given.The laboratory is supported by the European Commission which contributes for the 'Transnational Access' to the facility.
