A Review of Pteridophyta Potential in Phytoremediation of heavy metal Contaminated Environments

Pteridophyta are vascular plants(plants with xylem and phloem) that reproduce and disperse via spores. In evolution,pteridophyta lie between bryophyta and spermatophyta. Pteridophyta have unique ecological characteristics of high environmental adaptation and barren resistance. Some varieties of pteridophyta have ability of excessive absorption and accumulation of heavy metals such as arsenic(As) and antimony(Sb). Besides,pteridophyta have excellent performance in absorbing such heavy metals as cadmium(Cd),lead(Pb),copper(Cu),and nickel(Ni),and rare earth elements. In this paper,a review was made for application,mechanism,and advantages of pteridophyta in remediation of heavy metal contaminated environments,and prospect and possible research fields of pteridophyta in phytoremediation were discussed.

Comparative Study of the Efficacy of metal Removal from Contaminated Aqueous Solutions by Solid Bidentate Ligands&Liquid Plant Materials

heavy metal contaminated water sources pose serious health risks for humans,animals,and *** to and ingestion of heavy metals have been associated to liver,kidney,and brain ***:The aim of this research is to comparatively examine the metal removal efficacy of three solid bidentate chemicals and four plant *** Design&Methods:Standard solutions of zinc(II)and lead(II)ions with concentrations of 1,000 ppm were respectively treated with OA(Oxalic Acid),dibasic bidentate ligands(sodium hydrogen phosphate and sodium carbonate).Then,the solutions were placed on a shaker for 15 h,centrifuged,and the supernatant was analyzed using ICP-AES(Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry).Results:All the solid bidentate adsorbents were very effective in removing zinc and lead(>90%).However,more lead than zinc was removed across all adsorbents except for lemon where equal percent of zinc and lead(49%)were *** and Na2HPO4 removed about equal amount of lead(>99%).The plant materials(SP(Spinach),bell pepper and GBP(Green Bell Pepper)),respectively and preferentially removed more lead(98.9%,98.3%,81.5%)than zinc(91.7%,46%,46%).Conclusion:Although plant materials have gained attraction for the remediation of heavy metal,however,some bidentate chemical ligands such as OA,sodium carbonate and sodium hydrogen phosphates are even more effective in removing these metals from contaminated ***,heavier metals are preferentially removed than lighter metals.

Assessment of Cu, Pb and Hg contamination in Bottom Sediments Of Surface Water in XuZhou

Pollution of heavy metals Cu,Pb and Hg is assessed using geo-accumulation index in this paper. The result shows that the bottom sediments of surface water in Xuzhou is polluted by these heavy metals to deferent degrees, of which the Jinma River is the most serious, and then the Kuihe River, the abandoned Yellow River, and the Jinghang Canal. The Yunlong Lake has also been polluted by Hg. The three kinds of heavy metals in the order of concentration is Hg>Cu>Pb. The pollution degree and the type of element is closely related with industrial structure in Xuzhou.

Mechanisms of heavy metal accumulation in rice

Approximately one fifth of the agricultural soils in China is contaminated,mainly by heavy metals or metalloids such as cadmium(Cd) and arsenic(As),which are the class-one carcinogens. Rice produced in some areas of southern China often exceeds the maximum permissible limits of Cd and As,posing a significant risk to food safety. contamination in soil and irrigation water,soil acidification and growing cultivars with a high accumulation ability are the main reasons for high levels of heavy metals in rice grain. There are large genetic variations among rice cultivars and germplasms in both grain Cd and As concentrations. Os HMA3 is a Cd transporter on the tonoplast functioning to sequester Cd into the vacuole of rice roots. We have recently identified a new loss-of-function allele of Os HMA3 associated with high Cd accumulation in rice grain. This allele has a predicted amino acid mutation at the 380 th position from Ser to Arg and is present only in some Japonica cultivars. Cultivars possessing this allele have markedly increased root to shoot translocation of Cd. Paddy rice also accumulates As because of the elevated availability of As in flooded paddy soil. We have previously discovered that arsenite is taken up by silicon transporters in rice. In contrast,arsenate is taken up by phosphate transporters. Plants are able to reduce arsenate to arsenite efficiently and to extrude arsenite to the external medium,thus avoiding excessive buildup of As in plant tissues. We have recently characterized two arsenate reductases in rice(Os HAC1;1 and Os HAC1;2). Mutations in the two genes result in decreased arsenate reduction and arsenite efflux,and increased As accumulation in rice plants. Overexpression of either gene increases arsenate reduction and arsenite efflux,leading to lower As accumulation in rice plants and increased tolerance to arsenate.
