Background:The occurrence of mental health symptoms is higher in individuals aged between 18 and 24 years than in other age groups.Mental health literacy is derived from health literacy,and focuses on the knowledge,attitudes,and competencies that individuals need to acquire to manage their own health effectively.Low mental health literacy is associated with poorer mental health.Grit is also a known protective factor against mental disorders.Despite a heightened focus on mental health literacy and grit as important factors for decreasing mental health symptoms,knowledge of the effect of mental health literacy and grit on mental health symptoms is very limited.This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between mental health literacy and psychological symptoms and the mediating effect of grit on these relationships.Methods:This cross-sectional descriptive study used survey data from 178 university students in Korea.Data were collected between March and May 2022.The SPSS PROCESS macro(Model 4)was used to analyze the data.Results:Mental health literacy was not directly associated with psychological symptoms.However,an indirect pathway was observed between mental health literacy,depression,and anxiety,through grit.Conclusion:Mental health literacy affects psychological symptoms through grit.Therefore,to improve the mental health of university students,it is necessary to develop programs that increase mental health literacy and grit.

The high burden of kidney disease,global disparities in kidney care,and poor outcomes of kidney failure bring a concomitant growing burden to persons affected,their families,and carers,and the community at large.health literacy is the degree to which persons and organizations have or equitably enable individuals to have the ability to find,understand,and use information and services to make informed health⁃related decisions and actions for themselves and others.Rather than viewing health literacy as a patient deficit,improving health literacy largely rests with health care providers communicating and educating effectively in codesigned partnership with those with kidney disease.For kidney policy makers,health literacy provides the imperative to shift organizations to a culture that places the person at the center of health care.The growing capability of and access to technology provides new opportunities to enhance education and awareness of kidney disease for all stakeholders.Advances in telecommunication,including social media platforms,can be leveraged to enhance persons’and providers’education;The World Kidney Day declares 2022 as the year of“Kidney health for All”to promote global teamwork in advancing strategies in bridging the gap in kidney health education and literacy.Kidney organizations should work toward shifting the patient⁃deficit health literacy narrative to that of being the responsibility of health care providers and health policy makers.By engaging in and supporting kidney health-centered policy making,community health planning,and health literacy approaches for all,the kidney communities strive to prevent kidney diseases and enable living well with kidney disease.

Objective:To investigate health literacy,behavioral and psychosocial characteristics in coronary artery patients.Methods:Between March 2019 and 2020 years,275 coronary artery patients aged≥50 years were included in the study.Turkish health literacy Scale-32 and Beck Depression Inventory were used to collect the data.Results:General health literacy index score was 31.7 and the prevalence of limited health literacy was 59.3%.Adequate health literacy was 2.8 fold higher in the 50-64 age group,3.1 fold higher among men,3.4 fold higher among married and 5.3 fold higher among those who believed in the necessity of individual protective practices(Phealth status,comorbidities,family history of coronary artery disease,angiography history,material skills on reading and understanding,level of depressive syptom,commitment to individual protective practices health check-ups,utilizing health services,cigarette and alcohol use,and exercise and nutrition between limited and adequate health literacy(Phealth literacy was significantly higher among younger patients(OR:2.81;95%CI:1.46-5.62),male gender(OR:3.10;95%CI:1.46-6.58),married(OR:3.42;95%CI:1.39-8.44)and those with belief in individual protective practices(OR:5.3;95%CI:1.93-14.96).Conclusions:health literacy is poor among coronary artery patients and behavioral and psychosocial variables differ with health literacy levels.To keep cardiovascular health among these patients,health literacy-based interventions should be adopted in coronary artery clinics,especially for risky population.

Objective:The aim of this study was to summarize the evidence of health literacy and health outcomes in hypertensive patients.Methods:Articles published in English were searched from six databases:MEDLINE,CINAHL,Embase,ERIC,psycINFO,and SCOPUS.The articles published up to September 2017 were included.Results:Nineteen publications were included in the review.There was quality and consistent evidence that hypertensive patients with lower literacy had poorer knowledge.There was inconsistent evidence to show the relationship between health literacy and clinical outcomes,of systolic and diastolic blood pressure,and blood pressure control;behavioral outcomes,of self-care,self-efficacy,adherence;patientphysician interactions outcomes,of patient-physician communication,patient trust,involvement in decision making and other outcomes.Conclusion:The person with low health literacy is likely to have poor knowledge of hypertension.However,there is insufficient evidence to suggest that health literacy is associated with outcomes of hypertension independently.

The purpose of this study is to explore the degree of change in the health literacy(HL)level of residents and the impacts of health education related to COVID-19 on the HL in the context of the new coronavirus pneumonia(COVID-19)epidemic,combined with the 2018-2020 health literacy survey data of residents in Suzhou of China.A population-based sample of 9003 participants,15-69 years of age,in Suzhou was used from China’s 2018 to 2020 National health literacy Surveillance Data.Multivariate logistic regression models were established to analyze the degree of change in health literacy.The residents’awareness rate of HL in Suzhou,China,from 2018 to 2020 was 32.7%,37.1%,and 46.6%(Phealthy Skills(HS),which increased by 4.819 times(95%CI 4.810-4.828),and the major improvement among the 6 dimensions was Basic Medical(BM),which increased by 4.427 times(95%CI 4.239-4.256).In the context of the COVID-19 epidemic,the level of health literacy of Suzhou residents was significantly improved in 2020.

Despite depression being a global mental health disorder,many people with depression do not seek psychiatric help.In particular,it has been reported that only 15.7%of medical students seek treatment.A longer duration of untreated illness(DUI)leads to clinically poor results.To shorten the DUI,the mental health literacy(MHL)with regard to depression needs to be improved,although it is unclear which MHL components will improve the help-seeking process.Additionally,the existing MHL scale for depression is poorly validated for structural validity.Therefore,the purpose of this study was to develop an MHL scale for depression with verified reliability and validity(particularly structural validity)and verify its relationship with the help-seeking process.For this purpose,we adapted the mixed research method.First,we conducted a systematic literature review on MHL scales for depression to prepare a draft scale with content validity.Second,we conducted semi-structured interviews on MHL with outpatients with depression.Consequently,78 questions on MHL for depression were extracted.Third,to develop our scale,we verified the reliability and validity of these questions with 782 health professional students.The sample size was 780 and data collection was performed by collective survey method.It was conducted in 2018 in Japan.To verify the factor structure,exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted.We also examined the internal consistency,test-retest reliability,and criterion-related validity.The exploratory factor analysis revealed a three-factor structure(recognition of depression symptoms,helpseeking preferences,and depression onset possibility)with 10 items.According to the confirmatory factor analysis results,the goodness of fit indicators had a good fit.The internal consistency,test-retest reliability,and criterion-related validity had good values.Fourth,the relationship between the MHL of depression and other factors affecting the help-seeking process was examined using structural equation modelling.The

Objective:health literacy is closely associated with self-care behaviors in heart-failure patient.A reliable,valid,and practical measuring tool would evaluated the level of health literacy in Chinese patients with heart failure,and provide evidence for individualized education.Aim of this study was to translate Heart Failure-Specific health literacy Scale(HF-Specific HL Scale)into Chinese and test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version.Methods:The original HF-specific HL scale was translated into Chinese and modified for cultural adaption.Totally 164 HF inpatients were investigated with the Chinese version of HF-specific HL scale.To test the reliability and validity of the scale,item analysis,exploratory factor analysis(EFA),confirmatory factor analysis(CFA),and correlation analysis were conducted.Result:Cronbach's a value for the scale is 0.87;the correlation coefficients between each item and the total score ranged from 0.61 to 0.91.Three factors was extracted by EFA,which could explain 64.62%of the total variance.The result of CFA also showed that the scale demonstrated an acceptable model fit.The scale was significantly correlated with the Chinese version of the Heart Failure Knowledge Test(C-HFKT).Conclusion:The Chinese version of HF-specific HL scale is reliable and valid,and is suitable for assessment of HL in Chinese HF patients.

health literacy is the main component of health quality and a comprehensive health indicator reflecting related idea,cognition,behavior and skills.In this paper,we investigated the overall level and characteristics of health literacy based on the survey data of college students in Beijing.The differences of health literacy level among sub-groups were compared,and the influencing factors of health literacy were discussed.The results showed that college students had a higher level in overall health literacy than other peers,but a lower level in the prevention of chronic disease and infectious disease.The level of health literacy of college students was mainly affected by their major,hometown,and situation of health-related elective.Besides,we also found that the way college students used to acquire health knowledge was inconsistent with their expectations,and the requirements for health education were also very high.More systematic and comprehensive health education should be provided in universities,with an emphasis on the knowledge of lifestyle and daily habits.

A critical readability and quality analysis of internet-based patient information on neck dissections

Objective:Patients are increasingly turning to the Internet as a source of healthcare information.Given that neck dissection is a common procedure within the field of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery,the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and readability of online patient education materials on neck dissection.Methods:A Google search was performed using the term"neck dissection."The first 10 pages of a Google search using the term"neck dissection"were analyzed.The DISCERN instrument was used to assess quality of information.Readability was calculated using the Flesch-Reading Ease,Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level,Gunning-Fog Index,Coleman-Liau Index,and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook Index.Results:Thirty-one online patient education materials were included.Fifty-five percent(n=17)of results originated from academic institutions or hospitals.The mean Flesch-Reading Ease score was 61.2±11.9.Fifty-two percent(n=16)of patient education materials had Flesch-Reading Ease scores above the recommended score of 65.The average reading grade level was 10.5±2.1.The average total DISCERN score was 43.6±10.1.Only 26%of patient education materials(PEMs)had DISCERN scores corresponding to a"good quality"rating.There was a significant positive correlation between DISCERN scores and both Flesch-Reading Ease scores and average reading grade level.Conclusions:The majority of patient education materials were written above the recommended sixth-grade reading level and the quality of online information pertaining to neck dissections was found to be suboptimal.This research highlights the need for patient education materials regarding neck dissection that are high quality and easily understandable by patients.
