hairCARECUBETM (HCC) is a new additive for hair products that allows the active ingredient to penetrate into the hair. During the course of percutaneous absorption studies, we discovered that lyotropic liquid crystal promotes the skin’s absorptiveness to medicines. We conducted a study to determine whether or not lyotropic liquid crystal could be applied as a penetration-enhancing agent in hair, and as a result we have succeeded in developing HCC. In place of hair dye, we used fluorescein-HCC to evaluate hair permeability, and strong fluorescence was observed as deep as the core of the hair. Moreover, the strength of the fluorescence was dependent on HCC concentration. This result did not change under acidic or basic conditions. In addition, the same trends were observed when using an oxidative hair dye. Furthermore, when HCC was used together with hydrolyzed keratin, which repairs hair damage, a stronger restorative effect was observed. These results confirmed that HCC has the effect of promoting the permeation of pigments and other active ingredients into hair. HCC is expected to be very useful as an additive for developing functional cosmetic hair products.

Liquid Chromatographic Determination of Scopolamine in hair with Suspended Drop Liquid Phase Microextraction Technique

hair analysis is used in some branches of alternative medicine as a method of investigation to assist diagnosis. It is very useful when a history of drug use is difficult or impossible to obtain. In this re-search suspended droplet liquid phase microextraction (SDLME) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography and photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD) was used for preconcentration and analysis of scopolamine in hair samples. Therefore scopolamine was extracted from 2.0 g hair sample incubated in methanol (5 h, 50°C) and adjusted to pH 7.4 with, Na2HPO4–H3PO4 buffer solution (donor phase, P1) into an organic phase (P2) 350 μl n-octanol and then back extracted into a micro drop of aqueous acceptor phase (P3), adjusted at pH 3, with HCL. The extraction time, T1 (from P1 to P2) was 2 min and T2 (from P2 to P3) was 30 min. Optimum instrumental conditions were included;A C18 reverse phase column with water-acetonitrile-methanol (80:10:10) as the mobile phase was used and wavelength for UV detec-tion was 205 nm. The linear range was 10 to 10000 ng●mL–1, enrichment factor, detec-tion limit and relative standard deviation were 77, 0.1 ng●mL–1 and 5.4 respectively.

Formaldehyde (FHO) is a multipurpose chemical that is an eye, nose, throat and skin irritant, sensitizer and allergen, as well as a class 1 human carcinogen. Brazilian hair treatments, containing high levels of FHO (up to 11%), have become regularly used that have the potential to expose clients to toxic levels in excess of current regulatory standards. We report on a patient who underwent a single hair treatment and subsequently developed an autoimmune disease. We review the relevant literature on autoimmune disease and formaldehyde exposure. Our case adds to existing knowledge and suggests that physicians ask their patients about commercial products that contain formaldehyde when diagnosing autoimmune conditions.

Different studies show the need of immature adipose cell to induce the proliferation of bulge stem cells in order to kick off the anagen phase of hair cycle. Furthermore, the adipose derived stem cell, adipose progenitors, and growth factors secreted by mature adipocytes can help the wound healing and the vascular neogenesis. Nowadays, it is not known any protocol of tissue regeneration applied to hair transplantation, especially if aimed to the reconstruction of the main vascular network for the engraftment of transplanted hair and the healing process. The aim of the work is to investigate how the application of autologous cellular suspension obtained by Rigenera system, mechanical fragmentation procedure which allows to obtain a physiological saline solution consisting of a heterogeneous pool of cells rich in adipose derived mesenchymalstem cells and growth factors, helps the wound healing and engraftment of the transplanted hair. During hair restoration surgery, the adipose tissue recovered from the discard of follicular slicing, was processed using the Rigenera system. The obtained cell suspension was applied in the area of hair transplantation, increasing the natural background of adipocyte lineage and raising the amount of growth factors. In addition, the cellular suspension was applied to the suture on the occipital region. The cell population was characterized by FACS. The monthly evaluation of hair transplantation follow-up with photos and the patient’s impressions demonstrates that there is a faster healing of the micro-wound and a continuous growth of the transplanted hair even two months after the procedure, with a shortening of the dormant phase. In conclusion, this new approach aims to integrate regenerative medicine and hair restoration surgery in order to improve the outcome for the patient. It would be wonderful to continue this research to elaborate on the molecular cause behind this satisfying clinical.

Genetic analysis of the human hair roots as a tool for spaceflight experiments

The use of hair roots as experimental samples has been a research focus for understanding the effects of spaceflight on astronauts, because it has many advantages, one of which is the fact that hair matrix cells actively divide in a hair follicle and sensitively reflect the physical conditions of the human body. In 2009, a research program focusing on the analysis of astronauts’ hairs was initiated to examine the effects of long-term spaceflight on the gene expression and mineral metabolism in the human body. Since the number of samples per astronaut is limited to 5 strands of hairs at each sampling point, due to the ethical viewpoint of astronauts or limited resources in space, it is important to develop an effective method for the molecular analysis of small amounts of hair roots. In this study, mRNA successfully extracted from 1, 5, and 10 hair follicles was amplified and subjected to the DNA microarray analysis to compare the gene expression within subjects. The results indicated that (1) it was possible to perform the genetic analysis on hair samples stored at -80℃, even without a fixation buffer and (2) the newly modified method of mRNA extraction and analysis was effective in detecting differential gene expression in samples containing only 5 hairs. In conclusion, RNA was efficiently extracted from 5 hair roots, which is the same number of hair roots used in the space experiment;therefore, this method can be applied to genetically analyze astronauts’ hair samples.

Aim: An atraumatic insertion of graft is key to successful outcomes in this procedure but there is a definite learning curve in available techniques. Many physicians do not continue hair restoration practice because of the repeated initial failures. The goal of any technique or instrument in follicular unit extraction (FUE) is to extract an individual follicular unit without transaction and implanting it in recipient area without producing physical trauma to the follicular unit. This article describes a novel technique in which an innovative instrument, the KD spreader, that addresses all the problems faced by novice physicians during FUE hair transplantation. More importantly unique design of the instrument also solves the problem of fatigue of the operator's hands while performing the hair transplantation procedure. Methods: In this technique, the KD spreader, comprised of a shaft and a hook connected to the shaft are configured to allow the user to work efficiently. Two finger grip of the device provides efficient gripping for fatigue free operation. While performing FUE, the KD spreader provides sufficient traction at the time of scoring. During implantation of the grafts in premade coronal slits, this device provides adequate dilation and maximum visualization of the slit. Attachment of the graft holding plate reduces the chances of dehydration of the graft. Results: In this study, we have observed use of KD spreader definitely showed advantages over the conventional technique forceps. The KD spreader provides efficient gripping, maximum visualization of slit and better stretching force for the dilatation of the slit to adjust even bigger size follicular unit grafts. Conclusion: The KD spreader may improve ability of the beginners to perform FUE extraction and implantation smoothly.

In recent years, one of the priority areas of research in chemistry has become the processes carried out in an environment of liquid organic salts, the so-called ionic liquids (ILs), which are assessed as environmentally friendly or “green” alternatives to conventional organic solvents. ILs are non-volatile, highly polar solvents that dissolve many organic, inorganic, and organometallic compounds. Since they have no detectable vapor pressure, ILs are considered as potential substitutes for volatile organic compounds traditionally used as solvents. So-called deep eutectic solvents (DES) is a group of ILs that are liquid mixtures of a number of organic and (or) inorganic components taken in a certain ratio (eutectic or close to eutectic). DES deserve a special attention due to their negligible saturated vapor pressure, availability, low cost, as well as ability to dissolve at relatively high concentration of metal salts, metal oxides and various polymers. Particularly DES based on a mixture of choline chloride with urea (DES-1) or a mixture of choline chloride and adduct of urea with hydrogen peroxide (DES-2) give eutectics that are liquid at ambient temperature and have unusual solvent properties, including an ability to dissolve an animal hair in the presence of low concentration of sodium sulfide or ammonium thioglycolate. It was found that depending on the ratio between DES-1 and DES-2 in the mixture of two Deep Eutectic Solvents and the nature of sulfur-containing additive, the solubility of rabbit hair under used conditions, varies from 51% to 79%.

Tissue engineering essentially refers to technology for growing new human tissue and is distinct from regenerative medicine. Currently, pieces of skin are already being fabricated for clinical use and many other tissue types may be fabricated in the future.Tissue engineering was first defined in 1987 by the United States National Science Foundation which critically discussed the future targets of bioengineering research and its consequences. The principles of tissue engineering are to initiate cell cultures in vitro, grow them on scaffolds in situ and transplant the composite into a recipient in vivo. From the beginning, scaffolds have been necessary in tissue engineering applications. Regardless, the latest technology has redirected established approaches by omitting scaffolds. Currently, scientists from diverse research institutes are engineering skin without scaffolds. Due to their advantageous properties, stem cells have robustly transformed the tissue engineering field as part of an engineered bilayered skin substitute that will later be discussed in detail. Additionally, utilizing biomaterials or skin replacement products in skin tissue engineering as strategy to successfully direct cell proliferation and differentiation as well as to optimize the safety of handling during grafting is beneficial. This approach has also led to the cells' application in developing the novel skin substitute that will be briefly explained in this review.

Expression of stem cell factor in hair follicl epithelium

The interaction between flair folllcle dermis and its epidermis plays an important role in modulation of the growth and development of t he hair follicle. Stem cell factor (SCF ). which was found in recent years,is a cytokine related to the survival . growl h and development of the hemopoietic stem cells and can exert important biological effects on the development of keratinocytes and melanocytes. In this study, the expression of SCF in the hair follicle spithelium was invesstigated with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. It was found that the gene of the encoded SCF was strongly expressed al a limited area in the middle of the hair follicle epithelium. The protein of SCF was evenly expressed in each part of the hair follicle epithelium. The findings suggest that the expression of SCF in the hair follicle epithelium at the level of molecule is different from thai at the level of protein.
