Novel compound specified in dune reed (Phragmites communis Trin.) and its possible role as a protectant on the chloroplasts under stress

A small solute has been obtained with column chromatography, which only exists and accumulates in the leaves of dune reed in northwest China’s desert region. Its unique polyamine and aromatic features are quite different from those well-known ones accumulated under stresses. The natural quantity of the solute is strikingly proportional to the level of local high temperature, and a large section is distributed in the photosynthetic chloroplasts. Under lab conditions, we have proved that the solute plays a role in protecting or conserving chloroplasts under heat stress. So it is reasonable to suppose that the high resistance of dune reed to environmental high temperature and/or drought is at least partially due to the accumulation of this unique solute.

Probabilistic Model of the Brown Rat Control

We represent assessment of the rats control operator＇s actions, starting from the placement of rat control means （chemical, mechanical and others） in the object territory until the full its elimination and followed by assessment of the probability of rat population recovery. The probability of success is evaluated when using a combination of rat control means. We took into account changes in rat population occurring in different calendar periods of the year. The proposed calculation method can be used in training programs, as well as for the local forecast of releasing objects from rats and rats＇ re-settling.

What Is Humanity＇s Place in Nature, from an Objective （Biocentric） Point of View？

Are humans part of nature？ Clearly humans are, or they wouldn＇t be able to interact with it. The real question is what part are they？ Most texts define an exotic species as one translocated by humans to an area where it had not previously existed. （This would seem to make humans, throughout most of their range, an exotic species, although this fact is never mentioned）. But the effect that the species has on its new surroundings has little to do with how it got there, and more to do with its being a newcomer. What is a native species？ It is basically one that has been around a long time, i.e., not a newcomer. The question is, how long？ A length of time that makes sense is the length of time that it takes for the other species in the area to evolve to adapt to the newcomer-on the order of a million years. That would make humans native only to Africa, and everywhere else a rank newcomer （exotic species）. This is not a value judgment, just biological fact, but maybe also a good indication of how we should behave： with restraint, with the manners of a guest.

Morphometric Data of Testudo hermanni in the Vlora Area

The purpose of this paper is the morphometric study as well as the assessment of population structure of the Testudo hermani tortoise in the Vlora area. Individuals are collected in the study area. A morphometric study is made for the caught individuals. Suitable habitat. have been identified for their growth and development. It is estimated the number of healthy or unhealthy individuals, dead individuals and also the identification of the local population＇s threatening factors. Individuals with anomalies are studied and then compared with normal individuals, especially in terms of the number and shape of the dermal plates.
