COMPREHENSIVE INTRODUCTION TO THE TECHNOLOGY OF groundwater MODELING AND OPTIMAL MANAGEMENT

Three numeric simulation and optimal management models on groundwater resources are introduced in this paper. These models stand for the present developing levels on the technology of groundwater modeling and optimal management in China, and show the practical application situations of the technology. Each of the technology of unique characteristics and purposes. According to the tests of the practical engineering, these models have played a very important role in solving the difficult problems of groundwater resources.

groundwater Use in the Selenge River Basin, Mongolia

The Selenge River Basin occupies a total area of 447,000 km^2, of which 343,000 km^2 is located within Mongolia(the remainder is in Russia). The basin is characterized by an extreme continental climate, consisting of harsh, cold, dry winters and short, hot summers. Annual average temperatures are approximately-4℃ and annual rainfall ranges from 220 mm to 450 *** Selenge River Basin is a critical groundwater resource for Mongolia. Greater than 55%(~1.5 million) of Mongolia’s population resides within the basin and, during 2003, an estimated average of 700,000 m^3/day of water was abstracted from the basin’s groundwater system. The basin services Mongolia’s largest cities and industries(including the rapidly expanding mining sector) as well as important traditional pastoral ranges. However, due to the great spatial extent and irregularity of groundwater resources in the basin, coupled with the equally heterogeneous concentration of evolving landuses, some local aquifers near major centres are likely being overexploited, hence it is important to manage each sub-catchment individually within a greater overall management plan. Sustainable yields need to be determined to ensure maintenance of current groundwater levels and environmental flows for rivers, as well as providing a sustainable resource for continued utilisation. These need to be incorporated into management strategies at the international, regional and local level to ensure ongoing conservation of the resource and fair access for all stakeholders.

Using geospatial technologies to delineate Ground Water Potential Zones(GWPZ)in Mberengwa and Zvishavane District,Zimbabwe

The main objective of the study was to delineate Ground Water Potential Zones(GWPZ)in Mberengwa and Zvishavane districts,Zimbabwe,utilizing geospatial technologies and thematic *** factors,including geology,soil,rainfall,land use/land cover,drainage density,lineament density,slope,Terrain Ruggedness Index(TRI),and Terrain Wetness Index(TWI),were incorporated as thematic *** Multi Influencing Factor(MIF)and Analytical Hierarchical Process(AHP)techniques were employed to assign appropriate weights to these layers based on their relative significance,prioritizing GWPZ *** integration of these weighted layers resulted in the generation of five GWPZ classes:Very high,high,moderate,low,and very *** MIF method identified 3%of the area as having very high GWPZ,19%as having high GWPZ,40%as having moderate GWPZ,24%as having low GWPZ,and 14%as having very low *** AHP method yielded 2%for very high GWPZ,14%for high GWPZ,37%for moderate GWPZ,37%for low GWPZ,and 10%for very low GWPZ.A strong correlation(ρof 0.91)was observed between the MIF results and groundwater *** study successfully identified regions with abundant groundwater,providing valuable target areas for groundwater exploitation and highvolume water harvesting *** identification of these crucial regions is essential for effective decision-making,planning,and management of groundwater resources to alleviate water shortages.

Climate change and village adaptation impact on reliability of irrigation wells in China

This paper builds a water supply reliability econometric model to analyze climate changes and adaptation impact factors on water supply reliability of irrigation wells by using 100 villages' three-year(2010-2012) field survey data of five middle and eastern provinces of *** results show that long-run climate change factors,adaptation measures,village-level organizations of irrigation management,as well as extreme climate factors affect the water supply reliability of irrigation wells ***,there are significant differences impacting different crops and *** paper suggests that agriculture meteorological disaster monitoring and warning systems should be strengthened by increasing irrigation facilities construction and maintenance,promoting reform of agricultural irrigation water management system,and developing various forms of peasant cooperation organization in order to improve agricultural production capacity to adapt to climate change.
