Evolution model of a modern delta fed by a seasonal river in Daihai Lake,North China:determined from groundpenetrating radar and trenches

While deltas fed by seasonal rivers are common in modem sedimentary environments,their characteristics remain unclear as compared to those fed by perennial *** study identifies a small delta discharged by a seasonal stream flowing into Daihai Lake,in northern China,which is driven by ephemeral and high-energy flood *** 3D facies architecture was analyzed using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and sedimentary logs from outcrop and *** types of radar surfaces,including truncations of underlying inclined strata,weak reflections,and depositional surface of downlap and onlap,were *** radar facies (highangle obliquetangential,low-angle subparallel,gently plane parallel,plane-parallel,chaotic,and continuous strong reflection) were identified based on distinctive reflections,including amplitude,continuity,dip,and termination *** depositional units (Unit A to E) were documented from proximal to distal *** discharge signatures include significant grain-size decrease over short distance,abundant Froude supercritical flow sedimentary structures,poorly developed barforms,and small-scale scour and fill *** of lake-level and sediment budget were evaluated over the past 60 *** highstand stage (1960- 1980),amalgamated channel (Units A and B),and delta front (Unit C) were *** slope stage (1980-1996),the lower deposits (Units A,B,C) were eroded by Unit D with a distinct truncation *** lowstand stage,most eroded sediments bypassed the incised channel and accumulated in the distal part,in which a new depositional unit was formed (Unit E).The model demonstrates that deltas fed by seasonal rivers tend to accumulate large amounts of sediments carried by high magnitude floods within short periods.

Application of a nondestructive method to evaluate the active layer in a cold region

To provide a safe transportation system in an extremely cold region,evaluation needs to be conducted of the thickness and the volumetric water content of the active layer,as they significantly affect frost *** objective of this study was to evaluate the dielectric constant(κ)of the active layer using ground-penetrating radar(GPR)and a dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP);this evaluation was then used to estimate the thickness and the volumetric water content of the active layer.A field located in midwest Alaska was selected as the study site.A GPR survey and two DCP tests were conducted on the surface of the ground,and the ground temperature was *** the GPR survey,travel times of the electromagnetic wave in the active layer were *** addition,the thickness of the active layer was determined by using the dynamic cone penetration index(DCPI)and ground *** using the travel time and travel distance of the electromagnetic wave in the active layer,dielectric constants were calculated as 26.3 and 26.4 for two DCP *** the mean dielectric constant,the volumetric water content was estimated to be 40%~43%,and the thickness of the active layer was evaluated along the GPR survey *** spatial-scaled GPR image showed that the thickness of the active layer varied from 520 mm to 700 mm due to the presence of a puddle,which accelerated the heat *** results show that evaluation of the dielectric constant using the GPR survey and the DCP test can be effectively used to estimate the thickness and the volumetric water content of the active layer.
