Plant landscaping in courtyard design was studied from four perspectives of building, water, road, garden setting and plant landscaping. Landscape designs in Guangzhou Baiyun Hotel, the Humble Administrator's Garden (Suzhou), and bamboo pathway of Small Yingzhou in the West Lake (Hangzhou) to improve scientific and artistic properties of plant landscaping, and develop economic, social and ecological effects of garden green spaces to the most.

Metropolitan Manila, the capital region of the Philippines, initiated urban forestry projects toshowcase its environmental benefits. Metro Manila was once a part of a tropical mangrove forest dominatedby small trees locally called nilad (Scyphiphora hydrophyllaceae). The fast-paced urbanization transformedthe original ecosystem into a bustling metropolis subjected to environmental decay. The establishment ofurban forestry is one of the interventions sought by the government to mitigate the environmental ***, the concept of participatory urban forestry was formalized in 1988 by the national ***, it was during the early years of the 1970s that the idea of exerting collective effort in greeningMetro Manila started through the Green Revolution, with the primary motive of uplifting the economiccondition of the people rather than on ecological enhancement. The project was forced on the people to plantvegetables and fruit trees with less emphasis on forest trees species. Although the project was not successful,the government realized that the citizenry could be a great partner for a collective worthwhile undertaking.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the most abundant anthropogenic greenhouse gases contributing to increase air temperature. Urban areas covered by parks, gardens, tree-lined avenues, sports fields, and hedges are important sinks for CO2. Urban green areas should include the Botanical Gardens, taking into consideration their key role in ex situ plant conservation as well as air quality amelioration and social benefits. In such context, the CO2 sequestration capability of the most representative plant collections developing in the Botanical Garden of Rome and their influence on microclimate was analyzed. Our results highlight that plant collections have a CO2 sequestration capability of 6947 Mg CO2 year-1. The CO2 sequestration capability and air temperature lowering by plant collections growing in the Botanical Garden have positive effects (p ≤ 0.05) on the surrounding area resulting in 4% CO2 concentration and 1°C air temperature decreasing at 150 m from the centre of the Garden.

Forestation in the increasingly urbanized area generates a huge demand for ornamental tree stocks, requiring new approach to promote the cultural efficiency of highly valued seedlings. Chitosan oligosaccharide(COS) is one of biodegradable natural plant growth modifier derived from chitin and an abundant water insoluble biopolymer. In this study, Buddhist pine(Podocarpus macrophyllus)(PM) and Northeast yew(Taxus cuspidata)(TC) were cultured with or without COS addition from 1 July to 17 November 2016. Relative to the TC seedlings, the PM seedlings had greater growth of height and biomass which was found to be negatively correlated with the changes of nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) concentrations in shoot during the culture. Only those TC seedlings treated without COS addition had higher proportion of decline in the initial N concentration than that in the PM seedlings. Root P concentration declined less in Buddhist pine seedlings than that in Northeast yew seedlings treated with COS. By 17 of November 2016, both N and P seemed to have been diluted in the PM seedlings and exceed the demand in the TC seedlings. In conclusion, COS had the potential to be used for the culture of ornamental tree seedlings to promote nutrient utilization for shoot biomass accumulation, but more specific effect on nutrient allocation and utilization need to be confirmed by more studies.

The Safe Distance Between Road Lighting Fixtures and Street Trees

The road lighting system and the road greening system, which are mutually interrelated and independent, are two important parts in the urban road environment. Unreasonable road lighting is easy to induce light pollution and has a great negative impact on the physiology and growth of garden plants in the urban green space. In this paper, 21 kinds of common tree species in the urban green space of Zhengzhou were selected as the research object, and the photosynthetic physiological parameters of landscape trees under the LED light source were observed using LI-6400 Photosynthesis System. This paper attempted to find the critical point for initiating photosynthesis of different types of tree species under a certain light source and then calculated the safe distance between lighting fixtures and landscape trees. The results showed that road lighting interfered with the photosynthetic physiological activities of the surveyed trees, affecting the normal dormancy of the plants at night; the sensitivity of different tree species to night lighting was different, and there were some differences in the light compensation points, so the corresponding safe distance was also different. It is hoped that this study can provide a valuable reference and scientific basis for urban road greening and lighting design.

World increasing population and use of energy for transportation and electricity are demanding more extensive and more efficient use of land for agriculture;aiming to both food and biofuel supplies. This communication assesses the possible improvements in soil fertility, capture of greenhouse gas, and rainfall, as a result of the large scale terrestrial application of pyrogenic carbon aiming for desert greening. Fossil hydrocarbon coke is taken into account for this proposal because of the exhaustion of light petroleum proven reserves that is leading to a scenario of abundant coke production from the processing of non-conventional reserves.

This research investigates several woods originated from trees of tropical virgin forest as raw material for the production of granular activated carbon. Mechanical strength of the activated carbons produced was related to wood hardness and lignin content but not to cellulose-lignin ratio. One of the eight woods studied (Dividivi) produced an activated carbon with a high mechanical strength similar to that produced from coconut shell, taken as a standard. Dividivi is also suggested as promissory for desert greening.
