Distinct roles of alternative oxidase pathway during the greening process of etiolated algae

The vital function of mitochondrial alternative oxidase(AOX) pathway in optimizing photosynthesis during plant de-etiolation has been well recognized. However, whether and how AOX impacts the chloroplast biogenesis in algal cells remains unclear. In the present study, the role of AOX in regulating the reassembly of chloroplast in algal cells was investigated by treating Auxenochlorella protothecoides with salicylhydroxamic acid(SHAM), the specific inhibitor to AOX, in the heterotrophy to autotrophy transition process. Several lines of evidences including delayed chlorophyll accumulation, lagged reorganization of chloroplast structure, altered PSI/PSII stoichiometry, and declined photosynthetic activities in SHAM treated cells indicated that the impairment in AOX activity dramatically hindered the development of functioning chloroplast in algal cells. Besides, the cellular ROS levels and activities of antioxidant enzymes were increased by SHAM treatment, and the perturbation on the balance of NAD+/NADH and NADP+/NADPH ratios was also observed in A. protothecoides lacking AOX activity, indicating that AOX was essential in promoting ROS scavenging and keeping the redox homeostasis for algal chloroplast development during greening. Overall, our study revealed the essentiality of mitochondrial AOX pathway in sustaining algal photosynthetic performance and provided novel insights into the physiological roles of AOX on the biogenesis of photosynthetic organelle in algae.

In this study, we show that CIPK14,a stress responsive CBL-interacting protein kinase gene,is involved in phytochrome A-mediated far-red light inhibition of greening in Arabidopsis seedlings. The CIPK14-impairment mutant cipk14 grown in continuous far-red (FR) light did not show greening when exposed to white light illumination for 15 h. By contrast, the FR-grown phytochrome A null mutant phyA greened within 0.5 h of exposure to white light. Although greening of Col-4 (wild-type) was not completely abolished by FR, it exhibited a significantly decreased greening capacity compared with that of phyA. Further analyses demonstrated that the expression of protochlorophyllide reductase (POR) genes was correlated with the greening ability of the genotypes. In addition, CIPK14 appeared to be regulated by both the circadian clock and PhyA. Taken together, these results suggest that CIPK14 plays a role in PhyA-mediated FR inhibition of seedling greening, and that a Ca-related kinase may be involved in a previously undefined branch point in the phytochrome A signaling pathway.

A supply chain model with two competitive buyers under a hybrid greening cost and revenue-sharing contract

This article considers a vendor-buyer supply chain model where a single vendor produces a single product and markets it through two competitive buyers to a group of *** customer demand for the product depends on the selling price,green level and warranty period of the *** deliveries from the vendor are scheduled at a fixed time interval wherein the subsequent shipments appear when each of the buyer’s inventories from the former delivery has just been cleared out.A hybrid greening cost and revenue sharing(HGRS)contract is introduced,which provides more profit to individual members than their decentralised *** numerical study reveals that,under the HGRS contract,customers are influenced to buy a more reliable product at a reasonable price with a higher green level.A sensitivity analysis is also carried out to examine the impact of key model parameters on the optimal results.

Landscape greening of Subway Stations Close to Commercial Districts in Beijing

Due to the rapid urban construction, commercial districts in Beijing are constructed near subway stations. Good landscape greening plays a crucial role in improving the environmental quality of the area around subway stations. At present, there are few studies on the landscape greening around subway stations adjacent to commercial districts. In this paper, field research on landscapes in the commercial district around seven typical subway stations was conducted to monitor real-time noise and crowd activities and analyze the utilization status of street parks, in order to provide a reference for the construction and renovation of the landscape greening around subway stations near commercial districts.

The ‘greening’ of Natural Stone Buildings:Quartz Sandstone Performance as a Secondary Indicator of Climate Change in the British Isles?

A number of recent studies have explored the impact of climate change on natural building stones. Because of its sensitivity to change, sandstone can be seen as having a predictable, recognisable and sustained response to changes in system inputs that control performance – most crucially for the UK and Ireland, how it responds to an increased moisture input. There has been a widespread biological “greening” of sandstone buildings in response to these periods of wetness during autumn, winter and spring months. Furthermore, there is a wealth of literature detailing the response of sandstone in a variety of environments where sand-stone response is representative of the environment in which it has been placed. This letter suggests that the response of sandstone to trends towards wetter winter conditions is predictable to the extent that it may have potential to be a secondary indicator of climatic change – that is, a system that alters in response to fluctuations in environmental conditions in a sustained way. It is hoped that the letter may stimulate discussion as to what other possible indicators of climatic change remain unacknowledged.

The construction of 'Near Nature' waterfront greening landscape is a kind of waterfront construction model that complies with the nature and balances ecological landscape and regional development, which is of great significance to restore the healthy waterfront ecosystem and sustainable development. Starting from the conception and characteristics of 'Near Nature' waterfront greening areas, the design principles and construction schemes of waterfront greening landscape such as river, lake, canal and wetland were studied.

Measurement of Cooling Effect of Building Environment greening

A series of measurements showed that community greening and trees shading had different degree of cooling effect. The cooling effect of wall greening was related to factors such as heat storage capacity and the orientation of the wall, climatic conditions. As compared to the heat reduced by sheltering the solar radiation, the heat absorbed by plant transpiration had greater cooling contribution. Comprehensive considering environment, technology and economics factors, the building district greening should take trees as the priority. The trees shading can significantly drop indoor temperature and temperature fluctuation, also created better condition for night-time natural ventilation.

Application of Vertical greening as a New Model of Expanding Urban Green Spaces

A New Kind of Roof greening System in China

With the wider use of green roofs, new technology and new materials are being applied to the field of building roof greening forbuildings. This paper introduces BRGS （built- up roof greening system）, a new type of roof greening system that differs from roofgreening systems currently used in China in that it integrates a main and an auxiliary water storage capacity into the roof greeningsystem. Compared to other systems currently in use, BRGS offers a simpler, quicker, less labor intensive construction process;lighter floor load; and lower long term maintenance requirements and costs. It also makes full use of rainwater and snowmelt,which provides a significant amount of water to plants. This paper also introduces a planting experiment, the results of whichindicate that plants during their early stages of growth tolerate an alkaline environment, and that after a period of time, the pHvalue level of water stored in BRGS approaches 8.3, so we can conclude that BRGS is suitable for construction engineering.

Plantation of Fruit Tree and Its Application in Qiqihar’s Garden greening

The sample survey methodology was used to investigate the concept of fruit trees planted in the Qiqihar City landscaping. The application effects of fruit trees in landscape were compared and the utilization features of fruit trees were analyzed. The most appropriate fruit trees species were selected and the optimum configuration types were proposed. The research results showed that from the perspective of the utilization of fruit tress in landscape in Qiqihar, the fruit trees species were not abundant and the quality was also not enough. The mostly used trees genera included Lonicera of Caprifoliaceae family, Viburnum, Sambucus, and Prunus, Ceraras, Pyrus, Malus belonging to Rosaceae family.
