Two New Species of Eretmophyllum(Ginkgoales)from the Jurassic of Eastern Siberia

Two new species of Eretmophyllum Thomas are described from the lower(Toarcian)and upper(Aalenian)Prisayan Formation of the Irkutsk Basin,Eastern Siberia,Russia based on distinct morphological and cuticular features of the leaves that distinguish them from other species of the genus.Eretmophyllum polypapillosum sp.***.is characterized by the presence of 2-3 papillae on the lower and upper epidermis of ordinary cells.Taphonomically,the leaf burials of E.polypapillosum sp.***.indicate that it preferred mesophilic forests developed on river terraces and/or low watersheds.Eretmophyllum yershowskiensis sp.***.is represented exclusively by leaf cuticles extracted by coal maceration,and it probably inhabited the low banks of peat bogs.The presence of the genus Eretmophyllum in the Early Jurassic of France and Eastern Siberia shows that it was already widespread in the territory of Eurasia,distributed from Western Europe to Eastern Siberia.This indicates the possible existence of Eretmophyllum species elsewhere in the Early Jurassic such as Central Asia and Northwest China.

Here a new method was presented for reconstructing the paleoenvironment using the pavement cells characteristics of Middle Jurassic ginkgoalean fossils from Yaojie and Baojishan basins,Gansu Province,China.Specifically,we used the present day relationships between the length-to-width(L/W) ratio of leaf pavementcells of Ginkgo biloba and mean annual temperature(MAT),mean annual precipitation(MAP),and relative humidity(RH).It indicates that the length-to-width(L/W) ratios of Ginkgo biloba pavement cells were negatively correlated with MAT,MAP,and RH.Then the linear regressions equation were established.Based on these equations,those paleoclimatic parameters were inferred by using the ginkgoalean fossils data.The estimated paleotemperature in Yaojie and Baojishan basins during the Middle Jurassic were approximately 6°C higher than those on the present day,which are consistent with the results of the currently used stomata ratio method and global CO2 prediction model.We deduced that the paleoprecipitation in basins was approximately 460 mm higher and paleohumidity was approximately 20% higher than those in current.The two basins exhibited humid subtropical conditions during the Middle Jurassic.These observations were indirectly corroborated with fossil flora and spore-pollen assemblage data from the areas.
