Partitioning Anatolian Kinematics into Tectonic Escape and Slab Rollback Dominated Domains

Anatolia is the global archetype of tectonic escape,as witnessed by the devastating 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquake sequence,and the 2020 Samos Earthquake,which show different kinematics related to the framework of the escape *** Positioning System(GPS)motions of the wedge-shaped plate differ regionally from northwestwards to southwestwards(from east to west).Anatolia was extruded westward from the Arabian-Eurasian collision along the North and East Anatolian fault systems,rotating counterclockwise into the oceanic free-faces of the Mediterranean and Aegean,with dramatic extension of western Anatolia in traditional ***,which is the dominant mechanism for this change in kinematics,extrusion related to the Arabia/Eurasia collision or rollback of the African slab beneath western Anatolia is still *** assess the dominant driving mechanisms across Anatolia,we analyze recent GPS velocity datasets,and decomposed them into N-S and E-W components,revealing that westward motion is essentially constant across the whole plate and consistent with the slip rates of the North and East Anatolia fault zones,while southward components increase dramatically in the transition area between central and western Anatolia,where a slab tear is *** phenomenon is related to different tectonic driving *** ArabiaEurasia collision drives the Anatolian Plate uniformly westwards while western Anatolia is progressively more affected by the southward retreating African subducting slab west of the Aegean/Cypriot slab tear,which significantly increases the southward component of the velocity field and causes the apparent curve of the whole modern velocity *** 2020 and 2023 earthquake focal mechanisms also confirm that the northward colliding Arabian Plate forced Anatolia to the west,and the retreating African slab is pulling the upper plate of western Anatolian apart in *** propose that the Anatolian Plate is moving westwards as

Thermal-rheological structure of the lithosphere beneath Jiyang Depression:Its implications for geodynamics

Jiyang Depression, located in the southeast Bohai Bay Basin, has the geomorpho-logic framework of multiple uplifts intervening with sags. Combined the abundant geo-temperature data and thermo-physical parameters of rock samples derived from oil and gas exploration during the past years, with geothermal approaches, here we investigate the litho-spheric thermal regime of this depression. Consequently, based on the obtained thermal struc-ture of the lithosphere, along with rheological modeling, the lithospheric rheological profiles of Jiyang Depression are then determined. Our results show that the temperature at the bottom of sedimentary cover within depression varies from 129℃ to 298 ℃ , accompanied with the base-ment heat flow ranging between 54.3 and 60.5 mW/m2; and 406℃-436℃ for temperature at the bottom of the upper crust, along with heat flow varying from 47.7 to 52.6 mW/m2; while the tem-perature at the bottom of the middle crust is between 537 ℃ and 572 ℃, as well as heat flow ranging from 41.3 to 56.3 mW/m2. The temperature at Moho ranges from 669 ℃ to 721 ℃, the heat flow derived from mantle is between 38.1 and 43.1 mW/m2, and calculated thickness of the thermal lithosphere beneath depression varies from 71 to 90 km. Lithospheric thermal regime is a close correlation with such factors as crustal thickness and surface heat flow, etc. Usually, the larger the surface heat flow, the larger the deep temperature and heat flow within lithosphere, and the thinner the thermal lithospheric thickness. This high thermal regime of the lithosphere in Jiyang Depression is thought to be related to Cenozoic back-arc spreading during the western Pacific plate subduction into Eurasian continent. Paleomagnetic data from Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks of West Liaoning:Evidence for intracontinental rotation

Detailed rock magnetic studies of 55 lavas from Yixian and Fuxin area, West Liaoning, show the primary carriers of remanence to be pseudo-single domain ti-tanomagnetite. K/Ar dating indicates that the volcanic sequence spans 93 to 133 Ma. Stepwise thermal demagnetization successfully isolated well-defined characteristic magnetization (ChRM) in all lavas thermal-treated above 250℃ The mean paleodirections are D/I=5.9°/58.8° (α95 = 2.9°) and D/I =179.2°/-59.9° (α95 = 5.2°) for 27 normally magnetized flows and 28 reversibly magnetized flows, respectively. It indicates that since the Early Cretaceous there is no significant horizontal movement and rotation between the Yixian-Fuxin area and Eurasia. However, Korea Peninsula may have undergone a clockwise rotation of 33.9° relative to the Yixian-Fuxin area during the Cretaceous. New Cretaceous palaeointensity data and the constraints on geodynamics

A combined geochronologic(K-Ar) and palaeomagnetic study has been conducted on a basalt lava sequence at Yixian Formation in Liaoning Province, northeastern China. The new K-Ar age obtained from thirteen lava flows is 120.93±0.88 Ma. Detailed rock-magnetic investigations were conducted on each lava flow to determine their remanence carriers. The modified version of the Thellier-Thellier palaeointensity method with systematic partial thermoremanent magnetization(pTRM) checks was used for the palaeointensity determination. Virtual dipole moment(VDM) value is(3.66±0.10)×1022 Am2. This low dipole-field intensity value is approximately forty-five percent of the today field VDM. Combined with all of the other published palaeointensity data, possible links between the earth's interior process and its control on the variation of the earth's magnetic field during the geological time were tentatively discussed.

Tectonic Evolution of China and Its Control over Oil Basins

This paper is a brief review of the tectonic frame and crustal evolution of China and their control over the oil basins. China is subdivided into three regions by the Hercynian Ertix-Almantai (EACZ) and Hegenshan (HGCZ) convergent zones in the north, and the Indosinian Muztagh-Maqen (MMCZ) and the Fengxiang-Shucheng (FSCZ) convergent zones in the south. The northern region represents the southern marginal tract of the Siberian platform. The middle region comprises the Sino- Korea (SKP), Tarim (TAP) platforms and surrounding Paleozoic orogenic belts. The southern region includes the Yangtze platform (YZP), the Cathaysia (CTA) paleocontinent and the Caledonides between them in the eastern part, and the Qinghai-Tibet plateau composed of the Gondwana-affiliated massifs and Meso- and Cenozoic orogenic belts in the western part. The tectonic evolutions of China are described in three stages: Jinningian and pre-Jinningian, Caledonian to Indosinian, and post-Indosinian. Profound changes occurred at the end of Jinningian (ca. 830 Ma) and the Indosinian (ca. 210 Ma) tectonic epochs, which had exerted important influence on the formation of different types of basins. The oil basins distribute in four belts in China, the large superimposed basins ranging from Paleozoic to Cenozoic (Tarim and Junggar) in the western belt, the large superimposed basins ranging from Paleozoic to Mesozoic (Ordos and Sichuan) in the central belt, the extensional rift basins including the Cretaceous rift basins (Songliao) and the Cenozoic basin (Bohaiwan) in the eastern belt, and the Cenozoic marginal basins in the easternmost belt in offshore region. The tectonic control over the oil basins consists mainly in three aspects: the nature of the basin basement, the coupling processes of basin and orogen due to the plates interaction, and the mantle dynamics, notably the mantle upwelling resulting in crustal and lithospheric thinning beneath the oil basins.

Based upon the recent research on the Circum- Pacific geology and sedimentary basins a review of the time - space evolution of Mesozoic and Cenozoic basic and their geodynamic background are outlined. The foreland-type basins originated mainly in Late Triassic during the convergence of East Tethys and the continental collision, while the extensional and transform-extensional basins formed mainly in the Eastern China in Late Mesozoic and Cenozoic. They are closely related to the subduction Process of Pacific Plate from eat and the collision from southwest. As a sighficat indicator of deep Process of the Earth, the igneous rocks and magmatism offer very important information for the basin dynamic analysis. The evolution of the basins in East China were controlled by the combination and alternation effects from the surrounding Plates of Eurasia and the deep Process.

Q value structure of geoscience transect from Korla to Jimsar and its geodynamic implication

In this paper, the methods for Q value inversion in 2-D lateral inhomogeneous medium have been introduced. The 2-D Q value inversion has been conducted using seismic wide-angle reflection/refraction data of the profile from Korla to Jimsar. The result shows that the 2-D Q value structure of the transect from Korla to Jimsar is characterized by vertical stratifying and lateral zoning. Vertically, the crust can be divided into upper crust, middle crust and lower crust with the Q value increasing downwards. Horizontally, the total transect can be classified as three regions——the northern margin of the Tarim Basin, the Tianshan orogenic belt (TOB) and the southern margin of the Junggar Basin. At the northern margin of the Tarim Basin the Q value increases northwards, indicating a northward subduction of the Tarim Basin (TB) into the TOB. The Q value within the TOB jumps near Kumux, making a stage-like difference in Q value. The Q value distribution at the southern margin of the JB suggests a southward subduction of the Junggar Basin (JB) into the TOB. The double subduction pattern of the TB and JB into the TOB revealed by the transect from Korla to Jimsar has a big difference from the model ?lithospheric subduction with intrusion of the layers into the crust?developed according to the results of the geoscience transect from Xayar to Burjing. The differences between the two provide some dynamic evidence at lithospheric scale for the segmentation of the TOB.

Thermal-rheological structure of the lithosphere beneath two types of basins in eastern and western China

After calculating thermal-rheological properties of the lithosphere in the Northern Jiangsu basin, the Bohaiwan basin as well as the Jiyang depression in the east and Tarim basin in the west of China, this paper analyzes the relationship between thermal-rheological structures and tectonic evolution of the two types of basins. The results show that the thermal-rheoiogical structures of the lithosphere directly reflect the dynamic processes. Under different dynamic environments, the style of basin formation and the differences in basin evolution are closely related to the dynamic properties of the lithosphere indicated by thermal-rheological structures.

On crustal movement in *** area

Mt. Qomolangma lies in the collision zone between the fringe of Eurasia plate and Indian plate. The crustal movement there is still very active so far. In the past three decades China carried out five geodetic campaigns in Mt. Qomolangma and its north vicinal area, independently or cooperatively with other countries, including triangulation, leveling, GPS positioning, atmospheric, astronomical and gravity measurements. On the basis of the observation results achieved in the campaigns the crustal movements in the area were studied and explored. A non-stationary phenomenon both in time and space of the crustal vertical movement in the area is found. There seems to be some relevance between the phenomenon of non-stationary in time and seismic episode in China. The phenomenon of non-stationary in space is possibly relevant to the no-homo- geneity of crustal medium and non-uniform absorption of terrestrial stress. The horizontal crustal movement in the area is in the direction of NEE at a speed of 6—7 cm per year, and the trend of strike slip movement is manifested evidently in the collision fringe of Indian plate and Qinghai-Xizang block.
