Topological spaces via phenotype--genotype.spaces

Researchers hope that establishing a notion of proximity using topology will help to clarify the biological processes underlying the evolution of living organisms. The simple model presented here, using RNA shapes, can carry over to more general and complex genotype.phenotype systems. Proximity is an important component of continuity, in both real-world and topological terms. Consequently, phenotype spaces provide an appropriate setting for modeling and investigating continuous and discontinuous evolutionary change.

Potential for Safflower Cultivation under Temperate Conditions

Safflower is a Mediterranean-subtropical oil crop, with temperate climate. To assess the suitability of safflower may have certain production potential in organic farming in regions cultivation under temperate climate in low input organic farming, ten cultivars were grown in two years experiment in Lindhoft-Kiel in Northern Germany in clay/sand soil. Pearson correlations reveal that oil yield exhibited tight positive correlations with plant height, plant dry matter, capitula plant-1, achenes capitulum-1 and thousand achene mass （TAM）, but was not correlated with days to full flowering or oil concentration. Yield component analysis reveals that achenes capitulum1 had the major influence on the variation of oil yield of all studied cultivars, followed by capitula plant1 and TAM, while the oil concentration had slightly negative influence, and the plant density was negatively associated with oil yield. Although two years field experiment is not enough to analyse the performance of safflower adaptability to certain region, it can be concluded that the most adaptive cultivars are PI-209286 originated from Romania, and cultivar CART-19/89 originated from Poland, while the less adaptive cultivars were DO-13/03 and DO-15/03 with German origin in addition to the Canadian cultivar PI-572475/Saffire. The most striking yield component that contributes to the high yield is achene capitulumt, which can be used as a base for selecting cultivars adaptive to humid cold conditions. The growth period between full flowering and harvest influencing this yield component must be given attention to avoid low temperature and rainfall by tuning sowing date to improve yield at these conditions.

Chicken QTL mapping by multiplex PCR

To facilitate rapid determination of the chromosomal location of quantitative trait loci, the current approaches to gene mapping are improved using a multiplex PCR technique. The high-throughput linkage analysis method described here allows selection of 178 from 328 microsateilite markers through the multiplex PCR method combined with the semi-automatic fluorescence-labeled DNA analysis technology. Those polymorphism markers are distributed on 23 autosomes and one sex chromosome (chromosome Z), covering 3080cM genetic distance. The average marker density is 18cM, dispersed into 30 different sets. These selected polymorphism microsateilite markers segregate with the family members, following the Mendel's heritage laws, and are very useful for chicken linkage map analysis as well as for the research on some important economic quantitative characters of chicken.

Identification of K-Casein Polymorphism in Bali Cattle

The present study was conducted to identify K-casein （Kappa-casein） polymorphism in the Bali cattle （Bos sondaicus）. A 780 bp specific fragment of K-casein gene spanning from the forth exon region （517 bp） to forth intron （263 bp） was amplified from 60 individuals from the Bali Cattle Breeding Centre in Jembrana regency, Bali province. PCR-RFLP analysis with HindlII indicated that only the BB genotype.was found at locus I, while with PstI indicated that two genotype. AA and AB were found at the k-casein locus If. The frequencies of A and B alleles at locus II were 0.91 and 0.09, respectively. Mutations in locus II did not change the amino acid coding （silent mutation）. At locus I, comparison with allele frequencies in other cattle breeds indicates that frequencies in Bali cattle （Bos sondaicus） are significantly different from those observed in Bos taurus and Bos indicus breeds.
