Objective:To evaluate the possible antiulcer effect of the African garden egg,Solanum aethiopicum(S.aethiopicum)(a domestic vegetable) experimentally in rats.Methods:A methanol extract of the plant fruit was prepared by maceration.Twenty five overnight fasted rats for each model were divided randomly into five groups of five rats.Groups 1,2,3,4 and 5 received normal saline,extract dose levels of 100,200 and 400 mg/kg and 100mg/kg of ranitidine respectively.All administrations were given orally.For the indomethacin and aspirin models, ulcerogenic agents(indomethacin,50 mg/kg and aspirin 200 mg/kg) were given thirty minutes after extract treatments and animals sacrificed 8 h later.The acidified ethanol model(ethanol 60%+0.1 mol/L HC1) was given 1hr after extract treatment and animals sacrificed 1 h later. Ulcer index was checked and analysed with appropriate statistical tools.Results:Extract of S. aethiopicum showed positive effect on all the models used.It produced higher ulcer inhibition than ranitidine in the indomethacin and acid-ethanol models.All the anti-ulcer effects of the extract at different doses were dose dependent but only in indomethacin model did it produce statistically significant(Pgarden egg,a readily cultivated crop vegetable possesses ulcer protective properties against ulcers induced experimentally making it a cheap source of natural anti-ulcer remedy.

Geogenic lead (Pb) is considered to be less bioavailable than anthropogenic Pb and exerts less effect on the soil fauna. However,Pb contamination in vegetables has been reported in the case of geogenic anomalies, even at moderate concentrations (around 170 mgkg^(-1)). In this study, we investigated collembolan communities using both taxonomic- and trait-based approaches and observed fungal communities to assess the effects of a moderate geogenic Pb anomaly on collembolans and fungi in an urban vegetable garden soil.Results indicated that geogenic Pb indeed modified fungi communities and altered the functional structure of collembolan communities in garden soils. Although geogenic Pb presented low bioavailability, it affected soil fauna and vegetables similar to anthropogenic Pb.

Suzhou Industry garden is one of the few areas which attract foreign capital on a large scale in China. Its construction will bring effects on regional economy obviously. First, the garden as an important part of the construction of high tech industry belt between Shanghai and Nanjing will become the radiating source and core area in the course of development of high tech industrialization in the southern area of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River. Second, the garden will influence the development of Taicang City, the door port city of Suzhou, and the development of peripheral villages and towns as well. As Taicang City is being constructed as the assistant center for International Shipping Centre in Shanghai, the structure of double nucleus by which Suzhou and Taicang could benefit from each other will come into being. Third, the garden which has been formed as the unique area for introducing foreign managing mode as a whole will be made the base for demonstration and using international economic management experience for reference.

Fungi were isolated from the rhizosphere of pepper and garden-egg plants, with the aim of solubilizing the insoluble phosphate, identifying the most potent isolate from each rhizosphere and testing their tolerance to cadmium metal. The fungi isolates were obtained from the rhizosphere of pepper and garden-egg plants, using PVK agar and NBRIP-BPB broth culture to determine the quantity of phosphate solubilized. From the spectrophotometric readings, isolates GF1 (Penicillium spp) and PF7 (Aspergillus niger) were identified as most potent isolates. Various concentrations of cadmium (100, 50, 10 and 1 μg/ml) were added to the broth containing different isolates for tolerance determination and a control group for different isolates were also obtained. At four-day interval, a quantity of phosphates solubilized at different concentrations of cadmium and control were recorded. The quantity solubilized in 100, 50, 10 and 1 μg/ml treatment groups increased progressively from Day 4 to Day 12 in both isolates, with a sharp increase observed in isolate GF1. The tolerance of GF1 to cadmium showed that there was no significant difference (P < 0.05) in quantity solubilized in the control group when compared with Day 8 and Day 12 of 1 μg/ml concentration of cadmium metal, except at Day 4 which may be as a result of acclimatization. The quantity solubilized for PF7 at control when compared with 1, 10, 50 and 100 μg/ml differed significantly although there were higher quantity of phosphates solubilized when compared with GF1 and other results obtained from most published works. Our results suggested that these two isolates could be used for phosphate solubilization in cadmium metal environment though GF1 tolerates more than PF7, and could be employed for bioremediation of cadmium heavy metals.

Easy-to-Use Look-Up Hydrologic Design Charts of a Soak-Away Rain garden in Singapore

As catchments become urbanized due to population growth the impervious surfaces created by buildings and pavements in the expense of permeable soil, depressions, and vegetation cause rainwater to flow rapidly over the landscape. To mitigate the adverse impact of urbanization such as increased flooding and depleted groundwater recharge, around the world, several best management practices, in other words, green infrastructures have been practised, and soak-away rain garden is one of them. However, to have a rapid assessment of soak-away rain gardens on a range of potential hydrologic conditions (e.g., size of the soak-away rain garden, saturated hydraulic conductivity of the in-situ soil, and saturated hydraulic conductivity of the filter media), hydrologic design guidelines or design charts of soak-away rain gardens that are specific for local conditions are not currently available for many regions including Singapore. Thus, in this paper, with a design hyetograph of 3-month average rainfall intensities of Singapore, hydrologic design charts, especially, design charts on overflow volume (as a % of total runoff volume) of soak-away rain gardens are established for a range of potential hydrologic conditions by developing a mathematical model based on Richard’s equation using COMSOL Multiphysics, a finite element analysis and solver software package for various physics and engineering applications. These easy-to-use look-up hydrologic design charts will be of great utility for local managers in the design of soak-away rain gardens.

Butterfly Species Diversity and Abundance in University of Ibadan Botanical garden, Nigeria

Understanding the significance of butterflies in an ecosystem as an environmental healthy indicator and pollination of flowering plants is crucial to achieving sustainability and conservation of floral diversity. The aim of the study was to investigate the butterfly species diversity and abundance and compare the relationship between physical factor and butterfly species. Line transect were used to survey three habitats around botanical garden with scooped-net between June and July, 2010. Diversity varied from habitat to habitat. A checklist was made comprising a total of 57 butterfly species that were surveyed belonging to 9 families. There was a relationship between temperature and butterfly species diversity and abundance. There was no correlation between physical factors (relative humidity and temperature) and the total number of species and families. Moreover, butterfly numbers were not related to relative humidity in any species and family. However, temperature was significantly correlated with species. Therefore, understanding of the factors that affect butterfly species diversity and abundance in University of Ibadan Botanical garden is important for conservation.

To mitigate the adverse impact of urbanization around the world, several best management practices, in other words green infrastructures, have been used in a way that protect the natural hydrology of the catchment and are more beneficial to the environment. Soak-away rain garden, shallow, landscaped depressions commonly located in parking lots or within small pockets in residential areas, is one of those best management practices or green infrastructures. However, though in the past few decades the mathematical modeling work and the science of computer simulation have enhanced the understanding of hydrological processes, there is still a lack of modeling studies that focus on understanding the three-dimensional (3D) hydrological processes, such as the 3D ex-filtration process of a soak-away rain garden in a sufficient level of details. Thus, this paper develops a 3D mathematical model to represent the hydrological processes of a soak-away rain garden using COMSOL Multiphysics Java API, a Java-based interface of COMSOL Multiphysics. The developed model is demonstrated with a design hyetograph of 3-month average rainfall intensities of Singapore.

The article presents the results of research carried out by light microscopy of the anatomical structure of vegetative organs (leaf, root and stem) Lavandula officinalis Chaix of the family Lamiaceae introduced into the conditions of the Tashkent Botanical garden of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Our studies have shown that the presence or absence of trichomes can serve as an informative sign. In L. officinalis trichomes are simple unicellular two-terminal;three-terminal and multi-terminal. Lavender leaf hairs accumulate essential oils under the cuticle of secreting cells, the cuticle are tightly attached to the membranes of the secretory cells due to the absence of excretion products. Based on the results of a study of the morphological and anatomical features of the leaf of L. officinalis, it has been established that the forms of covering hairs and essential oil glands are of diagnostic value. In the epidermal, palisade and cortex parenchymal cells of the vegetative organs, yellow-orange essential (lavender) oil is noted. Identified diagnostic features that can be used in taxonomy and can be used to identify plant materials can also be used to develop indicators of authenticity in this type of raw material.
