Surface ornamentations of the cell walls of 24 desmid species varieties and forms belonging to 7 genera were studied under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Among these desmids, 1 species and 1 variety are new to science, 13 species, varieties and forms are recorded in China for the first time. These desmids are subdivided into homogeneous and heterogeneous types based on the characteristic ornamentations on their cell walls. A unique ornamentation pattern, the centre of each scrobiculation with a small punctum regularly arranged on the cell wall, and very fine puncta scattered on the cell wall can only be revealed under high SEM magnification.

The linear regression and horizontally stepwise correction are conducted on the observational data from AMSU-A L1 B of NOAA polar orbit satellite to invert a 40-layers(from 1,000 h Pa to 0.1 h Pa) dataset of atmospheric temperature with a horizontal resolution of 0.5°×0.5° after the correction of satellite antenna pattern and limb adjustment. Case study shows that the inversion data of temperature can reveal the detail structure of warm core in tropical cyclone. We choose two categories of tropical depressions(TDs) over the South China Sea, including the non-developing TDs and developing TDs. Both of them are developed downward from the middle and upper level to the lower level. Comparison between the evolutions of warm core in the two categories of TDs indicates that the warm core is developed downward from the middle and upper troposphere to the sea surface in all the downward-developing TDs. The difference is that in the group of further developing TDs, the warm core in the upper troposphere is intensified suddenly when it is extending to the sea surface. The warm core in the upper and lower troposphere is strengthened in a meantime. But the similar feature is not observed in the non-developing TDs. Then it may be helpful to judge the TD development by monitoring the change in its warm-core structure.

Mean heat flows and heat losses of the Northern and Southern hemispheres are calculated using degree 12 spherical harmonic representation of the global heat flow field (Pollack et al., 1993). Mean heat flows and heat losses of 0° hemisphere and 180° hemisphere, with median lines being 0° longitude and 180° longitude, are also calculated. The mean heat flow of the Southern Hemisphere is 99.3 mW·m -2, significantly higher than that of the Northern Hemisphere (74.0 mW·m -2). The mean heat flow of 0° hemisphere (94.1 mW·m -2) is also higher than the value of 180° hemisphere (79.3 mW·m -2). The mantle heat loss from the Southern Hemisphere is 22.1×10 12 W, as twice as that from the Northern Hemisphere ( 10.8×10 12 W). The 16.9×10 12 W mantle heat loss from 0° hemisphere is close to 16.0×10 12 W from 180° hemisphere. The hemispherical asymmetry of global heat loss is originated by the asymmetry of geographic distribution of continents and oceans. The asymmetric distribution of heat loss is a long-term phenomenon in the geological history.

Two new triterpenoid saponins named asterbatanoside H and I have been isolated from the roots of Aster batsngensis and their structures elucidated as 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3) β-D-glucopyranosyl-bayogenin-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosy-(1→6) and 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-23-O-acetyl-bayogenin-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6) β-D-glucopyranoside, respectively, by means of spectral and chemical data.

Environmental exposure to heavy metals has been linked to a wide range of human health hazards. We detected the levels of 15 metals in urine samples from 500 representative sub-samples in an ongoing occupational cohort study （Jinchang Cohort） to directly evaluate metal exposure levels. Fifteen metals, namely As, Ba, Be, Cd, Cs, Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, Se, TI, U, and Zn, were detected by inductively coupled plasma quadruple mass spectrometry. The results showed that median creatinine adjustment and geometric mean urinary metal levels were higher in the heavy metal-exposed group, except Se and Zn, than other reported general or occupational populations. Further studies should address the effects of heavy metals on human health.

Several methods have been developed to design and analyze moire magnifier, but these methods are all lack of quantitative consideration on the depth of moire imaging. In this paper, a new design method for moire magnifier based on depth cues from disparity is proposed. By using of the proposed method, the period magnification, the rotation angle of moire pattern can also be calculated, and the moire depth can be analyzed, too. According to the design and analysis results using MATLAB, the period of arrays and the cross angle are the important influence factors as the moire pattern above or below the microlens array. Moreover, with our 3 D design method, we can design different moire magnifier with different size, direction angle and depth of moire pattern as required.
