Metamorphic disturbances of magnetite chemistry and the Sm-Nd isotopic system of reworked Archean iron formations from NE Brazil

Iron formations are valuable archives of sedimentary conditions and post-depositional events.However,geochemical proxies commonly used to determine genetic characteristics can be variably modified during metamorphism and deformation,hampering their use as records of regional geological events.This work focuses on strongly reworked magnetite-quartz-rich rocks from the São Josédo Campestre Massif,one of the oldest fragments of preserved crust in South America.The genetic classification of these magnetite-quartz-rich rocks is not straightforward because primary assemblages and textures were variably modified by granulite facies metamorphism during a regional Paleoproterozoic migmatization event.To address genetic ambiguities,we analyzed their magnetite and pyroxene chemistry,wholerock geochemistry,and Sm-Nd isotopes.Magnetite chemistry indicates that pyroxene-poor iron formations(Type B)are low in trace elements such as Ti,Al,V,and Mn,suggesting a chemical similarity to iron formations elsewhere.In contrast,magnetites from pyroxene-enriched Type A iron formations are rich in trace elements and more akin to magnetite crystallized from higher temperature systems,such as skarn and IOCG.The^(147)Sm/^(144)Nd of these rocks show substantial variation even at the outcrop scale,indicating a locally-controlled,highly heterogeneous mixture of Archean,Paleoproterozoic,and Neoproterozoic sources.Therefore,our geochemical tools point out to heterogenous signatures of these magnetitequartz rocks and proxies compatible with both low and high-temperature conditions and age of deposition spanning sources from the Archean to the Neoproterozoic.We interpret that the studied São Josédo Campestre magnetite-quartz rocks represent Archean iron formations with original magnetite chemistry and isotopic signatures variably modified by metamorphism and by at least one deformation-related hydrothermal event.These results contrast with similar examples from China and Greenland where iron formations either preserved the magnetite chemistry or th

U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement: Reasons, impacts, and China's response

Applying qualitative and quantitative methods, this article explains the driving forces behind U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, assesses the impacts of this withdrawal on the compliance prospects of the agreement, and proposes how China should respond. The withdrawal undercuts the foundation of global climate governance and upsets the process of climate cooperation, and the impacts are manifold. The withdrawal undermines the universality of the Paris Agreement and impairs states' confidence in climate cooperation; it aggravates the leadership deficit in addressing global climate issues and sets a bad precedent for international climate cooperation. The withdrawal reduces other countries' emission space and raises their emission costs, and refusal to contribute to climate aid makes it more difficult for developing countries to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Cutting climate research funding will compromise the quality of future IPCC reports and ultimately undermine the scientific authority of future climate negotiations. China faces mounting pressure from the international community to assume global climate leadership after the U.S. withdraws, and this article proposes that China should reach the high ends of its domestic climate targets under the current Nationally Determined Contributions; internationally, China should facilitate the rebuilding of shared climate leadership, replacing the G2 with C5. Meanwhile, China needs to keep the U.S. engaged in climate cooperation.

Ground-State Structure and Physical Properties of NB_2 Predicted from First Principles

Using the newly developed particle swarm optimization algorithm on crystal structural prediction, we predict a new class of boron nitride with stoicMometry of NB2 at ambient pressure, which belongs to the tetragonal 14m2 space group. Then, its structure, elastic properties, electronic structure, and chemical bonding are investigated by first-principles calculations with the density functional theory. The phonon calculation and elastic constants confirm that the predicted NB2 is dynamically and mechanically stable, respectively. The large bulk modulus, large shear modulus, large Young＇s modulus, and small Poisson＇s ratio show that the 14m2 NB2 should be a new superhard material with a calculated theoretical Vickers hardness value of 66 GPa. Further analysis on density of states and electron localization function demonstrate that the strong B B and 13 N covalent bonds are the main reason for its high hardness in 14m2 NB2.

Phonopheresis Associated with Nanoparticle Gel from Phyllanthus amarus Relieves Pain by Reducing Oxidative Stress and Proinflammatory Markers in Adults with Knee Osteoarthritis

Objective: To determine the changes in serum levels of inflammatory biomarkers and antioxidant levels among the knee osteoarthritis(OA) patients after treatment with Phyllanthus amarus(PP) by nanoparticle gel phonophoresis. Methods: This study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-control, parallel-group, clinical trial involving 30 subjects with mild-to-moderate degree of knee OA. The patients were allocated to two groups using a computer-generated random numbers, and received conventional ultrasound therapy(control group, 15 cases) and PP(treatment group, 15 cases) once daily for 10 sessions. The pain was evaluated by visual analogue scale(VAS). Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbnent assay(ELISA). Nitric oxide(NO) was determined by modified Griess reagent. The antioxidant effects, including superoxide dismutase(SOD) and total antioxidant capacity(TAC), were also measured by ELISA assay. Results: The VAS score was significantly decreased in the treatment group compared with the control group after treatment(P<0.01). The serum concentrations of TNF-α and NO were significantly reduced in the treatment group compared with the control group(P<0.01) after treatment. However, the serum concentrations of SOD and TAC in the treatment group were significantly higher after treatment compared with the control group(P<0.01). Conclusion: PP could alleviate knee pain and significantly reduce systemic antiinflammatory effects in knee OA patients.
