Differential scanning calorimetry revealed a secondary transition at a lower temperature besides the order-disorder phase transition near 260K in powders,not in single crystals,of C_(60) from which solvents and impurities had been carefully excluded.This is attributed to phase transformation facilitated by nucleation around stacking faults.This proposal is supported by internal friction measurements on films,which confirmed the presence of this secondary transition,and by x-ray diffraction,which detected an hcp structure within the fcc lattice of C_(60) at room temperature.

Ageing behaviors of the positive electrode of lithium ion battery are characterized by measuring mechanical properties of the electrode reeds, such as resonance frequency and internal friction, as a function of temperature. In the measurements of the electrode reeds with a sandwich structure of active material film and current collector of Al foil, two thermally-activated relaxation processes can be observed on the polyvinylidene difluoride binder in the active material film. Namely, a surface-related relaxation at ~150 K and a relaxation corresponding to the β-phase transition at ~240 K in the polymer binder can be observed at high signal/noise ratio. The resonance frequency decreases and the internal friction increases after charge/discharge cycling. The changes in activation energies of the relaxation processes also indicate that the measurement of mechanical properties of the positive electrode is an effective method for characterizing ageing behaviors of the positive electrode as a whole.

In this work the results obtained from subjecting aluminium coated with diamond by tri-boadhesion to a wearing process with a plane rider. Here it is shown the ratio of the normal toshearing forces, called friction factor, as an indication of the resistance of the surface. It was foundthat the film of the aluminium coated with diamond resisted three times compared with the oxida-tion film of commercial aluminium, which for the purpose of this work was considered withoutcoating.

To understand precursory phenomena before seismic fault sliP,this work focuses onearthquake nucleation process on a fault plane through numerical simulation.Rate and statedependent friction law with variable normal stress is employed in the analysis.The resultsshow that in the late stage of nucleation process:(1)The maximum slip velocity ismonotonically accelerating;(2)The slipping hot spot(where the slip rate is maximum)migrates spontaneously from a certain instant,and such migration is spatially continuous;(3)When the maximum velocity reaches a detectable order of magnitude(at least one orderof magnitude greater than the loading rate),the remaining time is 20 hours or longer,andthe temporal variation of slip velocity beyond this point may be used as a precursoryindicator;(4)The average slip velocity is related to the remaining time by a log-log linearrelation,which means that a similar relation between rate of microseismicity and remainingtime may also exist;(5)when normal stress variation is taken

In this investigation, optimization of tribological performance parameters of Al-6061T6 alloy reinforced with SiC (15% by weight) and Al2O3 (15% by weight) particulates having particle size of 37 μm each has been presented. The wear and frictional properties of the hybrid metal matrix composites have been studied by performing dry sliding wear test using pin-on-disc wear tester. A L27 orthogonal array is selected for the analysis of the data. From the test results it is observed that sliding distance has the significant contribution in controlling the friction and wear behaviour of hybrid composites. A confirmation test is also carried out to verify the accuracy of the results obtained through the optimization. In addition an optical micrograph test is also performed on the wear tracks to study the wear mechanism.

The analytical results of the previous paper(Wu,1989)are used to study the properties of vertical veloc- ity distribution at the top of the boundary layer.The relative position of a jet like geostrophic flow and el- lipse-shaped orography will affect the characteristic feature of vertical motion at the top of the boundary layer when the contributions of friction and orography are taken into consideration simultaneously.
