Functional traits of tree species with phylogenetic signal co-vary with environmental niches in two large forest dynamics plots

Aims While using phylogenetic and functional approaches to test the mechanisms of community assembly,functional traits often act as the proxy of ***,there is little detailed knowledge regarding the correlation between functional traits of tree species and their niches in local *** suggest that the co-varying correlation between functional traits and niches should be the premise for using phylogenetic and functional approaches to test mechanisms of community *** functional traits,phylogenetic and environmental data,this study aims to answer the questions:(i)within local communities,do functional traits of co-occurring species covary with their environmental niches at the species level?and(ii)what is the key ecological process underlying community assembly in Xishuangbanna and Ailaoshan forest dynamic plots(FDPs)?Methods We measured seven functional traits of 229 and 36 common species in Xishuangbanna and Ailaoshan FDPs in tropical and subtropical China,*** also quantified the environmental niches for these species based on conditional *** then analyzed the correlations between functional traits and environmental niches using phylogenetic independent *** examining phylogenetic signals of functional traits using Pagel’sλ,we quantified the phylogenetic and functional dispersion along environmental gradients within local tree *** Findings For target species,functional traits do co-vary with environmental niches at the species level in both of the FDPs,supporting that functional traits can be used as a proxy for local-scale environmental *** traits show significant phylogenetic signals in both of the *** found that the phylogenetic and functional dispersion were significantly clustered along topographical gradients in the Ailaoshan FDP but overdispersion in the Xishuangbanna *** patterns of phylogenetic and functional dispersion suggest that environmental filterin

Drivers of the differentiation between broad-leaved trees and shrubs in the shift from evergreen to deciduous leaf habit in forests of eastern Asian subtropics

In eastern Asian subtropical forests,leaf habit shifts from evergreen to deciduous broad-leaved woody plants toward higher *** shift has been largely explained by the greater capacity of deciduous broad-leaved plants to respond to harsh climatic conditions(e.g.,greater seasonality).The advantages of deciduous leaf habit over evergreen leaf habit in more seasonal climates have led us to hypothesize that leaf habits would shift in response to climate changes more conspicuously in forest canopy trees than in forest understory ***,we hypothesize that in the forests of the subtropics,plants at higher latitudes,regardless of growth form,would better tolerate seasonal harsh climates,and hence show less differentiation in leaf habit shift,compared to those at lower *** test these two hypotheses,we modelled the proportion of deciduous broad-leaved species and the incidence of deciduous and evergreen broad-leaved species in woody angiosperm species compositions of ten largesized forest plots distributed in the Chinese *** found that the rate of leaf habit shift along a latitudinal gradient was higher in forest trees than in forest *** also found that the differentiation in leaf habit shift between trees and shrubs is greater at lower latitudes(i.e.,warmer climates)than at higher latitudes(i.e.,colder climates).These findings indicate that specialized forest plants are differentially affected by climate in distinct forest strata in a manner dependent on latitudinal *** differences in forest plant response to changes in climate suggest that global climate warming will alter growth forms and geographical distributions and ranges of forests.

An important mechanism promoting species coexistence is conspecific negative density dependence(CNDD),which inhibits conspecific neighbors by accumulating host-specific enemies near adult *** enemies may be genotype-specific and regulate offspring dynamics more strongly than non-offspring,which is often neglected due to the difficulty in ascertaining genetic ***,we investigated whether offspring and non-offspring of a dominant species,Castanopsis eyrei,suffered from different strength of CNDD based on parentage assignment in a subtropical *** found decreased recruitment efficiency(proxy of survival probability)of offspring compared with non-offspring near adult trees during the seedling-sapling transition,suggesting genotype-dependent interactions drive tree demographic ***,the genetic similarity between individuals of same cohort decreased in late life history stages,indicating genetic-relatedness-dependent tree mortality throughout *** results demonstrate that within-species genetic relatedness significantly affects the strength of CNDD,implying genotype-specific natural enemies may contribute to population dynamics in natural forests.

The effect of tree size,neighborhood competition and environment on tree growth in an old-growth temperate forest

Aims Understanding the controls influencing tree growth is central to forest *** many factors such as tree size,neighborhood competition and environmental variables,have been proposed as being important in explaining patterns of tree growth,but their relative contributions are still subject to *** aimed to examine the relative importance of tree size,local abiotic conditions and the density and identity of neighbors on tree growth in an old-growth temperate forest in northeast *** We used linear mixed models with data from a 25 ha(500×500 m)broad-leaved Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis)mixed forest perma-nent plot to examine the relative importance of these local drivers on tree growth at three organizational levels(community,guild and species).Subplot was included as a random effect to account for spatial autocorrelation in growth of trees located within the same subplot,and species was included as a random effect to account for variation among species in *** Findings Tree size was typically the most important predictor of growth,followed by neighborhood competition and then soil *** correlation of tree size to growth varied from strongly positive for large trees and medium trees to slightly positive for small *** effect of neighbor-hood competition on growth showed weak negative density dependence as indicated by slightly negative effect of total basal area of neighbors and the proportion of conspecific *** factors influenced growth of very common species,smaller tree-size classes and shade-tolerant *** concluded that the relative importance of variables driving patterns of tree growth varied greatly among tree size classes,shade tolerance and abundance classes in this temperate *** results provide critical information for future studies of forest dynamics and offer insight into forest management in this region.

Woody plant is one of important substrates for bryophyte growth,whether epiphytic bryophyte have ecological preferences for woody plants? Here,our primary interest in developing torus-translations test is to evaluate the associations between epiphytic bryophyte and woody plant *** study was performed in a 100 m × 100 m forest dynamics plot in temperate mountain forest（China）.A total of 3318 woody plant belonging to 75 species（diameter at breast height ≥ 1 cm） were identified in the *** recorded 988 epiphytic bryophyte specimens belonging to 61 species in 254 woody plants ***-translations test showed that 93.44%（57/61）,93.44%（57/61）,and 98.36%（60/61） bryophyte species were significant positive associated with the family,genus,and species of woody plants,respectively.A total of 317,563,and 857 significant positive associations with the family,genus,and species of woody plants were observed among 61 examined bryophyte *** addition,fewer significant negative associations were identified with the family,genus,and species of woody *** study demonstrates that most epiphytic bryophytes exhibited ecological habitat preferences for woody plants *** observations highlight the importance of species composition of woody plant in the maintenance of epiphytic bryophyte diversity in temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest.

Extreme climatic events(ECEs) are predicted to increase in frequency and magnitude as ongoing global climate change. ECEs have profound impacts community structure and dynamics, but how dominant species of a community differently respond to ECEs remains unclear. In a subtropical forest, more than 140,700 tree and shrub individuals were monitored from 2005, and the community experienced an extreme winter storm in February 2008. Here, we quantified the changes of population dynamics of dominant species(i.e., Castanopsis eyrei, Schima superba, Pinus massoniana, and Daphniphyllum oldhamii) in this forest before and after the storm. We found that plot-level DBH of P. massoniana and C. eyrei were significantly increased, while plot-level basal area of P. massoniana and S. superba were decreased. P. massoniana was most affected by the storm(Mortality: 9:08%, population change rate:-8.93%), followed by C. eyrei(Mortality: 6:93%, population change rate:-4.91%), and the mortality and populations change rates of P. massoniana and C. eyrei were twice higher than S. superba and D. oldhamii. Overall, there were more deaths at the small diameter level, but the diameter structure of the dominant species population remained basically stable. The number of individuals, density, number of dead individuals, and mortality of the dominant population differed among habitats. The spatial point pattern of the dead individuals of four dominant populations and the dead individuals of each life stage were mainly aggregated in the 0-100m scale. In short, population dynamics of dominant species were significantly altered following the storm, but the changes varied with species. Our study suggests that taking main dominant species of a community in consideration, contributed to a better understanding of biological response of forest communities to the changing environments.

The effects of environmental and dispersal processes on macrofungi community assembly remain ***,it is not well understood if community assembly differs for different functional guilds of macrofungi,e.g.,soil and rotten-wood *** this study,using 2433 macrofungi sporocarps belonging to 217 species located within a forest dynamics plot in temperate mountain forest（China）,we examined the explanatory power of topography,spatial eigenvectors,plant community,and light availability for local spatial variation in the macrofungi community through variance partitioning and partial least squares path *** found spatial eigenvectors and light as the most important factors for explaining species richness and composition of *** was negatively correlated with species richness of ***,species richness and composition of soil macrofungi were best explained by light,and species richness and composition of rotten-wood macrofungi were best explained by spatial *** plant community structure was not an important factor for species richness and composition of *** findings suggest that spatial processes,perhaps dispersal limitation,and light availability were the most important factors affecting macrofungi community in temperate deciduous broad-leaved *** differences in influencing factors between soil and rotten-wood macrofungi were observed,with light as the major driver for soil macrofungi and unknown spatial processes as the major driver for rotten-wood *** findings shed new light to the processes shaping community assembly in macrofungi in temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest and point to the potential importance of both intrinsic dynamics,such as dispersal,and external forcing,such as forest dynamics,via its effect on light availability.
