This paper presents a review of the variation in the hydro-environment over the past four decades in Wuhan,China,and discusses its close relationship with flash flood *** flash flood events have inundated underground infrastructures and resulted in significant economic losses and casualties,which are also discussed in relation to various external and internal *** external factors are predominantly owing to heavy rainstorms resulting from extreme climate *** internal factors predominantly include a decrease in wetland areas,changes in topography,and disrepair of drainage systems in urban *** the 1970s,lakes in Wuhan have been significantly reduced in size(by approximately 40%).This reduction in wetland area decreases the water storage capacity in urban areas,and the frequency of large flooding events thus increased from 0.1 event/year to approximately 0.2 event/***,the disrepair of drainage systems in urban areas has reduced their ability to resist flood *** in topography have also intensified the flood volume per unit time,further burdening the drainage *** 2016,Wuhan suffered from several large flooding events that led to some of the most severe economic losses in recorded *** drainage system at the urban center of Wuhan and proposed flood prevention methods are discussed in detail in this *** sponge city(SPC)concept has been attempted in Qingshan District,Wuhan,and its success proved the reliability of the theory.A SPC is believed to reduce the impacts of future flash floods in China and other developed and developing countries.

Thailand Experience in Developing Wellness-driven Rice as the Key to Fight NCDs and Farmer Poverty

Prevalence of chronic noncommunicable diseases(NCDs)is rapidly increasing and has become a global problem in modern *** consumption of simple,processed carbohydrate foods is considered one of the main causes of NCD in young and elderly *** grain rice is an important source of a complex carbohydrate,dietary fiber,enriched with vitamins,minerals,and ***,palatability of brown rice is the key success factor among white-rice-addicted *** the initial phase,we successfully breed rice strains with aromatic,soft-whole grain,white rice contains high grain-Fe/Zn density and intermediate glycemic index(GI).The most successful variety was uniquely soft-textured black purple rice named Riceberry,depicting rice enriched with blueberry nutritional *** development for fiber-rich,high antioxidant has been extremely active from academia,real sectors,and *** total,39 patent applications(18 granted patents),12 international publications,and 18,700 Youtubes related to *** 2017,Riceberry has become the most popular choice for product development surpassing Thai Hommali *** than 200 food and non-food products were commercialized as dairy replacement,side dishes,meals,hot beverages,bakery,and breakfast *** the second phase,we successfully breed low GI rice strains named Pink+4 equipped with farmers’preferred resistance to flash flooding,bacterial leaf blight,leaf blast,and devastating brown planthopper adapted to organic rice *** products combined of low GI rice flour with purple Riceberry have been the next trend for functional ingredients and *** healthy rice products have high potential globally as healthy foods,gluten-free,fiber-rich,complex carbohydrate,and nutrient-dense from sustainable organic farming.
