Annular grooved projectiles(AGPs)have drawn ongoing concerns as an advanced penetrator for their excellent anti-rebound capability in impacting metal plates.They could become embedded solidly in the target surface during low-velocity impact.In this investigation,the firm embedding behavior of AGP was observed by impact experiments.Corresponding numerical simulations provided a better understanding of this process.Experimental and numerical results indicated that the firm embedding behavior of AGP was mainly due to the filling-material in the groove rather than the friction between the projectile and target,unlike traditional shape such as conical projectile.According to observation,firm embedding process can generally be subdivided into four stages:initial-cratering stage,groove-filling stage,fillingmaterial failure stage and rebound vibration stage.Moreover,the damage mechanics of target material around crater was obtained through microscopic tests.A comparison of the cross-sectional figures between the experiment and simulation proved that the analysis and the proposed method were reasonable and feasible,which further demonstrated that the firm embedding behavior has application potential in new concept warheads.

This paper develops a moderated mediation model in which the interactive effects of food traceability and environmental dynamism on firm performance are mediated by the core capabilities(operating capabilities and marketing capabilities)in food supply chain context, by invoking the indirect view of organizational learning theory. Our hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression and bootstrapping methods with a sample of 216 food manufacturing firms in China, and a survey-based, two-informant design was used to collect data. The results revealed that operating and marketing capabilities fully mediate the food traceability-performance link. In addition, environmental dynamism positively moderates the food traceability-core capabilities link. Moreover, it is found that operating and marketing capabilities transform the interactive impacts of environmental dynamism and food traceability into firm performance. Our study offers a fine-grained picture of the essential food traceability-performance link by revealing for the first time that there is an interactive impacts of food traceability and environmental dynamism on firm performance via core capabilities.

China has been the world’s largest automobile producer since 2009,but it still lags behind other countries in terms of productivity. Based on theNational Bureau of Statistics of China (NBSC) firm-level data and the improvedapproach proposed by Ackerberg et al. (2015), this paper investigates thecontribution of total factor productivity (TFP) growth to the Chinese automobileindustry and evaluates the impact of firm entry and exit on TFP growth. Theempirical results show that the TFP of the Chinese automobile industry grows at10.7% per year. Joint venture and foreign-owned firms have a significantly higherTFP growth rate than others. Large-scale firms have a higher TFP growth rate thando small-scale firms, but the latter have caught up after 2004. Moreover, the entryof new firms and exit of old firms significantly improve the aggregate TFP growthrate.

This paper presents a comprehensive study on predicting the cross section of Chinese stock market returns with a large panel of 75 individual firm characteristics.We use not only the traditional Fama-MacBeth regression,but also the"big-data"econometric methods:principal component analysis(PCA),partial least squares(PLS),and forecast combination to extract information from all the 75 firm characteristics.These characteristics are important return predictors,with statistical and economic significance.Furthermore,firm characteristics that are related to trading frictions,momentum,and profitability are the most effective predictors of future stock returns in the Chinese stock market.

State ownership and firm performance: Empirical evidence from Chinese listed companies

While the relationship between state ownership and firm performance has been widely researched, the empirical evidence has provided mixed results. This study applies panel data regression techniques to 10,639 firm-year observations of nonfinancial Chinese listed firms during 2003–2010 to examine the relationship between state ownership and firm performance. The results show that state ownership has a U-shaped relationship with firm performance. The Split Share Structure Reform in2005–2006 played a positive role in enhancing the relationship between state ownership and firm profitability ratios. Although state ownership decreased significantly after 2006, it remains high in strategically important industry sectors such as the oil, natural gas and mining sector and the publishing, broadcasting and media sector. The findings reveal that a higher level of state ownership is superior to a dispersed ownership structure due to the benefits of government support and political connections. The Split Share Structure Reform made previously nontradable shares legally tradable, improving corporate governance and reducing the negative effect of non-tradable state shares.

This study investigates whether venture capital reputation is a blessing or a curse for entrepreneurial firm innovation by using data from 1,553 observations of venture capital investments on entrepreneurial firms in China's New Over-the-Counter (OTC) Market. Advantages that venture capital brings to entrepreneurial firms have been widely ack no wledged in exta nt research. However, our research emphasizes the potential resource outflows rather tha n in flows when firms are embedded in a shared reputable venture capital, and finds that the curse effect of venture capital reputation on entrepreneurial firms is manifested. Furthermore, we develop the concept of venture capital ntra-industrial reputationM and "extra-industrial reputation" to give a contingent answer to the z/blessing or curse" question. The conclusions are draw n in dicating that the curse effect is contingent o n in dustrial dista nee. Venture capital intra-industrial reputation is positively linked to entrepreneurial firm innovation, whereas extra-industrial reputation exerts a strong negative impact, which is responsible for the curse effect.

Propping by controlling shareholders, wealth transfer and firm performance: Evidence from Chinese listed companies

Propping acts by controlling shareholders are common in Chinese listed firms In this paper, we use data on related-party transactions of all listed Chinese firms from 2002 to 2008 to investigate the motivation behind controlling share holders' propping acts and subsequent wealth-transfer behavior and how both affect firm performance. We find that such institutional motivators as the maintenance of shell resources and qualification for refinancing have a significant effect on the propping behavior of controlling shareholders of Chinese listed firms and that such behavior is often followed by more serious tunneling when shareholders are driven by these motivators. Compared with non-state owned firms, state-owned firms with the motivation to qualify for refinancing exhibit more severe tunneling after engaging in propping behavior. We also find that while propping by controlling shareholders improves a firm's current operating performance, in firms whose controlling shareholders' are motivated by the desire to maintain shell resources or obtain a refinancing qualification their performance declines in the following year because of subsequent tunneling. The results presented in this paper provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between propping and tunneling, controlling shareholders engagement in both and the consequences of that behavior.

A dramatic surge in online peer-to-peer(P2P)lending emerged in China,where(under conditions of credit deficiency)it took only three years for the size of the P2P lending market in China to reach four times that of the United States and ten times that of the United Kingdom.The literature indicates that ownership structure is an important factor that influences P2P lending firms’performance,while research on the underlying mechanisms remain insufficient.This study analyzes the data of P2P lending companies between June 2016 and March 2017.The results demonstrate that although ownership structure has minimal direct effect on the turnover volume and number of lenders and borrowers,it moderates the effects of firm age,interest rate,and loan term on firm performance.These results enrich the property theory and shed light on how P2P lending firms with different ownership structures could succeed when there is institutional deficiency.

With the gradual promotion of market-oriented reform of the RMB exchange rate,the fluctuation range of the RMB exchange rate is increasing.How to deal with the impact of exchange rate volatility on Chinese exports is an important challenge faced by China.This paper finds that although exchange rate volatility,as a whole,has a negative impact on exports,high-productivity exporters are less prone to exchange rate volatility shock in both intensive and extensive margins.As high-productivity firms are less affected by exchange rate risk,they account for larger market shares.This paper,from a new perspective,provides evidence that increasing productivity helps mitigate the negative impact of exchange volatility on exports.
