This article continues our highlights last two years[1,2]on the highest independently confirmed mainstream(silicon,perovskite,and organic)solar cell efficiencies in 2023.The world record power conversion efficiency(PCE)of the single-junction silicon and perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells has reached over 27%and close to 34%,respectively,in 2023.We have also witnessed the rapid mass-production development of the silicon passivating contact and silicon back contact solar cells,as well as further progress with perovskite solar cells(PSCs).

Dear Editor,Numerous aspects of ecosystem ecology are influenced by insects(Prasad,2022).Herbivory of plant organs by insects may influence the biogeochemistry of forests by changing the speed of litter decomposition(Schowalter,2022).Cycas micronesica K.D.Hill is the only native gymnosperm in the Mariana Islands.The once-abundant tree experienced no known lethal threats prior to the 2003 invasion of Guam by the scale Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi(Marler,2012).This insular case study has been the subject of abundant research(Marler et al.,2021).Changes to leaf litter chemistry improved litter quality following A.yasumatsui infestations(Marler and Dongol,2016),but the prediction of increased decomposition speed has not been confirmed with experimental incubations.

Background: Acute effects of Far Infrared (fir) treatment in horses are unknown, especially short periods of 30 minutes, as is any effect on such muscle parameters as warm-up balance, overall exercise balance and laterality asymmetries. Aim: This study examines three equine cases in detail to measure any effects of a short period of fir treatment. Methods: Multi-frequency bioimpedance (mfBIA) and acoustic myography (AMG), non-invasive techniques, were applied pre- and post-treatment with fir to the back (T5-L4/5) and for m.Longissimus dorsi and m.Gluteus medius was recorded during a 15-minute warm-up regimen. mfBIA parameters included extracellular resistance (Re), centre frequency (fc), membrane capacitance (Mc), intracellular resistance (Ri) and phase angle (PA) which indicates level of training and health status. Results: fir treatment responses for mfBIA parameters were found to be horse-specific and different, whilst in terms of AMG, fir treatment for 30 minutes had a beneficial effect on overall balance in all three horses (5 out of 6 muscles), and a beneficial effect on the AMG parameter ST (force symmetry) in all three horses (6 out of 6 muscles). An overall improvement for combined balance and ST values for both muscles and all three horses of 86% was noted with fir treatment, compared to 56% without. Conclusions: This preliminary study of fir treatment in three horses, has been found to result in an overall improvement in combined balance and ST values for both muscles. fir has potential as a promising treatment to reduce the risk of warm-up-related injuries in athletic horses.

Controlled afterglow luminescent particles for photochemical tissue bonding

Upconversion materials(UCMs)have been developed to convert tissue-penetrating near-infrared(NIR)light into visible light.However,the low energy conversion effciency of UCMs has limited their further biophotonic applications.Here,we developed controlled afterglow luminescent particles(ALPs)of ZnS:Ag,Co with strong and persistent green luminescence for photochemical tissue bonding(PTB).The co-doping of Ag^(+) and Co^(2+) ions into ZnS:Ag,Co particles with the proper vacancy formation of host ions resulted in high luminescence intensity and long-term afterglow.In addition,the ALPs of ZnS:Ag,Co could be recharged rapidly under short ultraviolet(UV)irradiation,which effectively activated rose bengal(RB)in hyaluronate-RB(HA-RB)conjugates for the crosslinking of dissected collagen layers without additional light irradiation.The remarkable PTB of ZnS:Ag,Co particles with HA-RB conjugates was confirmed by in vitro collagen fibrillogenesis assay,in vivo animal wound closure rate analysis,and in vivo tensile strength evaluation of incised skin tissues.Taken together,we could confirm the feasibility of controlled ALPs for various biophotonic applications.

Introduction:Human prion diseases(PrDs)are rare,fatal encephalopathies requiring comprehensive diagnostic analysis.This study examines hospital referral patterns to the Chinese National Surveillance for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease(CNS-CJD)from 2006 to 2019.Methods:We assessed 1,970 PrD cases referred by various hospitals to CNS-CJD.Referral distributions were analyzed based on provincial-level administrative divisions(PLADs).Differences in referral numbers and confirmed cases between monitored and nonmonitored PLADs were statistically evaluated.Results:The study included cases from 344 hospitals across 29 Chinese PLADs.Hospital referrals increased over the surveillance years:from 28.2 hospitals annually during 2006–2010,to 64 in 2011–2015,and 107 in 2016–2019.Of these,12.2%(42/344)of hospitals reported≥10 PrD cases,accounting for 70.0%(1,379/1,970)of total cases.Referral numbers varied across PLADs,with the top 5 of Beijing(41),Henan(26),Shanghai(21),Guangdong(21),and Jiangsu(21)leading.Additionally,12 CJD-surveillance PLADs had more referring hospitals and PrD cases than the other 17 non-surveillance PLADs.Conclusions:Geographical variations in PrD recognition exist across Chinese PLADs,with certain regions and major cities reporting notably higher case numbers.
