Raman spectra and difTerential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are examined in ferroelectric liquid crystal D-4-(2-methylbutoxy)phenyl 4-decyloxybenzoate (MBOPDOB) at various temperatures. With increasing temperature the 15 and 49 cm-1 Raman lines vanish in the Sm C* phase without any detectable frequency shift, and the 93 cm-1 line shifts to 88 cm-1 with its line width broadening, which could be elucidated by the anharmonic interaction and rotational Brownian motion. Energy transfer between two modes (1 178 and 1 166cm-1, and 1 710 and 1 738 cm-1) is related to the stiffening of the C=O bond and the weakening of the C-O bond. DSC measurements indicate that the Sm A-Sm C* transition with a very small transition heat belongs to a continuous second order attributed to a larger temperature range of Sm A phase and a small spontaneous polarization.

We propose an electronic model in Spice, instead of traditional mathematical analysis, for analyzing the performance of ferroelectric liquid crystal （FLC） under various working conditions. Using this equivalent circuit model,it is easy to simulate and analyze the behavior of an FLC layer in three different typical parameters,including temperature, input light wavelength, and the frequency of driving voltage. We conclude that the response velocity drops as the wavelength increases in the range of visible light, and for the parameter of temperature, the velocity reaches its lowest value when the temperature reaches a certain degree,meanwhile,the frequency of driving voltage exerts important effects on the response velocity only when the frequency is beyond a critical value. Excellent agreement is achieved between simulation and experimental results.

We describe a fiber optic hydrophone array system that could be used for underwater acoustic surveillance applications （e.g. military, counter terrorist, and customs authorities in protecting ports and harbors）, offshore production facilities or coastal approaches as well as various marine applications. In this paper, we propose a new approach to underwater sonar systems using the voltage-controlled liquid crystals and simple multiplexing method. The proposed method permits measurement of sound under water at multiple points along an optical fiber using the low cost components and standard single mode fiber, without complex interferometric measurement techniques, electronics or demodulation software.
