Floral organs are important for plant reproductive growth and seeds *** Arabidopsis,nitric oxide(NO) accumulates and reproductive growth is severely damaged when subjecting to ***,it is still unclear about the regulation mechanism of NO metabolism on floral ***,we identified two GSNOR null alleles hot5-2 and hot5-4,which accumulate a large amount of NO and show obviously fertility *** reciprocal crosses,we found that the fertility defects come from the *** hot5 ovules,NO specially accumulated in nucellus as well as adjacent endothelium,causing the repressed degeneration of nucellus and the delayed development of female gametophyte,which affects plant ***,genetic analysis revealed that GSNOR is a maternal gene,not directly participate in gametophyte ***,the subcellular localization results show that GSNOR specially expressed in nucellus and other maternal tissuesof ovules rather than the female gametophyte,implicating GSNOR controls NO balance in ovules to regulate nucellus degeneration and female gametophyte ***,all the fertility defects can be rescued by complement expression of GSNOR gene,suggesting GSNOR is essential for the fertility of ***,our results suggest that GSNOR is a maternal gene,regulating the nucellus degeneration and the female gametophyte development by controlling the level of NO in ovules,provides an important molecular mechanism for studying plant infertility especially under stress.
