Pilot Study Evaluating the Use of a Commercially Available Oral Nutritional Supplement in the Management of Chronic Kidney Disease in Cats

Purpose: To determine if cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) would willingly consume an oral nutritional supplement formula (NS-CKD) and to assess associated effects on select clinical and biochemical parameters. Methods: Client-owned cats with CKD classified as International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage 2 (n = 7), IRIS stage 3 (n = 12), or IRIS stage 4 (1 cat) were classified by the owners as having normal or variable appetites. The cats were offered 30 ml NS-CKD for 14 days concurrently with a meal in a separate bowl and the amount of the NS-CKD consumed daily was recorded. Bodyweight, physical examination, and serum biochemical profiles were assessed on Days 0, 7, and 14. Results: Greater than 50% of the NS-CKD was consumed by 14 of 20 (70%) cats and 12 of 20 cats (60%) consumed >80% of the NS-CKD. The total volume of NS-CKD consumed over the course of the study was statistically greater for the cats classified by owners as having normal appetite (P = 0.046). Increases in body weight were noted for 9 of 14 cats (64.3%) that ingested >50% of the NS-CKD and 1 of 6 cats (16.7%), that ingested ≤ 50% (p = 0.1409) and the group mean % change in body weight was greater in the cats that ingested >50% of the NS-CKD (P = 0.023). The volume of NS-CKD consumed correlated to the % change increases in serum bicarbonate concentration (R = 0.4998;P = 0.02) and was weakly correlated to % change decreases in serum phosphorus concentration (R = 0.0406;P = 0.08). Conclusions: In this pilot study, the NS-CKD was accepted by most cats, no adverse effects were noted, and several findings suggest that the product was associated with ameliorating some metabolic complications which suggest it could be considered in the management of cats with CKD.

Dermoid cyst in a domestic shorthair cat

A S-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented for examination of a subcutaneous mass in his tail.The mass was firm,non-painful,oval,and approximately 2.5×3.5 cm. Surgical exploration revealed a well-circumscribed,encapsulated mass.The mass was removed and sectioned for histopathological examination.In gross section,it was filled with numerous dark hairs.Histologically the mass was consisted of haired skin with dermal cystic structures lined by stratified squamous epithelium.The cyst lumen contained squamous debris and filled with keratinous material.Numerous hair shafts were extended from the wall of the cyst.The sebaceous and apocrine gland adnexal structures were also observed which confirmed the diagnosis of dermoid cyst.No tumor recurrence was observed after surgery in fallowing checkups.Cutaneous or subcutaneous cysts of all types are considered rare in cats and to our knowledge this is the third reported case of cutaneous dermoid cyst of cats in veterinary literature which is different from the other cases because it occurred in dorsal midline in tail area whereas other's occurred in flank area.

Sequence variability analysis on major histocompatibility complex class Ⅱ DRB alleles in three felines

The variation of the exon 2 of the major histo-compatibility complex(MHC)class II gene DRB locus in three feline species were examined on clouded leopard(Neofelis nebulosa),leopard(Panthera pardus)and Amur tiger(Panthera tigris altaica).A pair of degenerated primers was used to amplify DRB locus covering almost the whole exon 2.Exon 2 encodes theβ1 domain which is the most vari-able fragments of the MHC class II molecule.Single-strand conformational polymorphism(SSCP)analysis was applied to detect different MHC class II DRB haplotypes.Fifteen recombinant plasmids for each individual were screened out,isolated,purified and sequenced finally.Totally eight distinct haplotypes of exon 2 were obtained in four individuals.With-in 237 bp nucleotide sequences from four samples,30 vari-able positions were found,and 21 putative peptide-binding positions were disclosed in 79 amino acid residues.The ratio of nonsynonymous substitutions(d_(N))was much higher than that of synonymous substitutions(d_(S)),which indicated that balancing selection probably maintain the variation of exon 2.MEGA neighbor joining(NJ)and PAUP maximum parsimo-ny(MP)methods were used to reconstruct phylogenetic trees among species,respectively.Results displayed a more close relationship between leopard and tiger;however,clouded leopard has a comparatively distant relationship form the other two.

Domestic cats represent one of the most common sources of indoor allergens.All over the world,many households own cats,whose allergens are persistent and widespread.Cat allergy itself is frequent,and its symptoms vary from rhinoconjunctivitis to life-threatening asthma.In vitro diagnosis using precision medicine allergy immunoassays is important because natural cat dander extracts may differ in quality and quantity of some of the individual allergen components and other molecules.In the component-resolved diagnosis of cat allergy,singleplex and multiplex specific immunoglobulin(Ig)E assays include use of the cat-specific major allergen,secretoglobin Fel d 1(as a species-specific molecule),other allergen components(such as lipocalins Fel d 4,cross-reacting with other animal similar molecules,and Fel d 7,present in small quantities in natural extracts),and serum albumin Fel d 2(related to the cat-pork syndrome).IgA Fel d 5 and IgM Fel d 6 are not available as allergen components in the current commercial IgE immunoassays,but they may impair the in vitro diagnostic evaluation of cat allergy because galactose-α1,3-galactose is an IgE-binding epitope of these native feline allergens.The benefits of molecular-based cat allergy diagnosis are continually evaluated,as the role of recombinant allergen components already known is detailed and new other molecules of interest may be discovered in the future.

Excessive Moderator Band in a Female Cat’s Left Ventricle

This report describes a case of cardiomyopathy associated with excessive moderator bands in a 7 years old cat. In the cat echocardiography examination was observed cardiomegaly, decreased systolic function and thinning of the left ventricle wall. The electrocardiogram showed the occurrence of supraventricular tachycardia. The treatment was initiated with digoxin, furosemide and taurine supplementation, with an improvement of the clinical signs, however the animal died in a fall. The diagnosis of cardiomyopathy associated with excessive moderator band, was based on the multiple cardiac bunds which connect the septum to the free wall of the left ventricle observed in the cat necropsy.

Communication of the Results of the Treatment with Probiotics in Two Cats with Chronic Gingivostomatitis

feline chronic gingivostomatitis (GECF) is a disease of unknown etiology and considered as one of the most frequent paradontal diseases in cats of medium and/or advanced age. This problem is aggravated in the case of cats suffering from some immunosuppressive pathology such as feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or feline panleukopenia virus (VPF), in which the probability of suffering from GECF is increased. There is a wide variety of treatments against GECF but none of them ensures a complete cure of the disease, with signs of recurrence being observed at the month of treatment. For these reasons, in this investigation we have evaluated a strain of Lactobacillus plantarum with probiotic capacity for the preventive and/or therapeutic purpose of this oral pathology in cats. This investigation was performed in accordance with the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee of the Veterinary Faculty of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Acromegaly in a domestic short-haired cat: First report from Iran

A 12-year-old cat, weighting 7.4 kg, suffering from fatigue, exercise intolerance, polyphagia, polyuria and polydipsia was presented. Obesity, a massive head, inferior prognathia and widened inter-dental spaces were noted on examination. Radiographic surveys showed organs enlargement. Labaratory results revealed hyperglycemia and glycosuria. Based on fasting hyperglycemia, concurrent hyperglycemia and glycosuria, diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was made. However, according to the poor diabetic regulation, clinical signs and the absence of other diseases, a tentative diagnosis of acromegaly was confirmed by increased plasma levels of growth hormone. Managing diabetes mellitus with increasing doses of insulin was the only possible therapeutic strategy.
