Effects of COVID-19 fear and anxiety on attitudes towards complementary and alternative medicine use in women with gynecological cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective:Patients with gynecological cancer commonly use complementary and alternative medicine(CAM)methods to cope with the disease.However,despite the existence of treatment strategies,the effect of fear and anxiety caused by coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on attitudes about CAM use is unclear.This study was carried out to investigate the effect of fear and anxiety experienced by patients with gynecological cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic on their attitudes towards the use of CAM.Methods:This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study that included 177 women with gynecological cancer;participants were recruited from a social networking site for cancer patients in Turkey between June and December 2021.Data were collected using an online survey that included the Personal Information Form,the fear of COVID-19 Scale,the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale,and the Attitude Towards Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Scale.Descriptive statistics,t-test,Pearson’s correlation test,and simple linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to analyze the data.Results:During the pandemic,55.4%of the participants reported using CAM methods,but only 22.6%were using CAM before the pandemic.The participants who used CAM during the pandemic also scored higher on the fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety scales(20.69±5.37 and 13.09±6.29,respectively)compared to the participants who did not use CAM(9.29±2.72 and 6.35±2.06,respectively).fear of COVID-19 accounted for 52%of the CAM attitude score,while coronavirus anxiety accounted for 15%of the CAM attitude score.fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety together accounted for 53%of CAM attitude.Conclusion:Gynecological cancer patients with high levels of COVID-19-related anxiety and fear during the pandemic used CAM more.Given that the psychological effects of the pandemic will continue in the coming years,CAM use should be evaluated as a coping strategy,especially due to the COVID-19-related anxiety and fear experienced by patients with gynecologica

Pathological anxiety is among the most difficult neuropsychiatric diseases to treat pharmacologically,and it represents a major societal problem.Studies have implicated structural changes within the prefrontal cortex(PFC)and functional changes in the communication of the PFC with distal brain structures in anxiety disorders.Treatments that affect the activity of the PFC,including cognitive therapies and transcranial magnetic stimulation,reverse anxiety-and fear-associated circuit abnormalities through mechanisms that remain largely unclear.While the subjective experience of a rodent cannot be precisely determined,rodent models hold great promise in dissecting well-conserved circuits.Newly developed genetic and viral tools and optogenetic and chemogenetic techniques have revealed the intricacies of neural circuits underlying anxiety and fear by allowing direct examination of hypotheses drawn from existing psychological concepts.This review focuses on studies that have used these circuit-based approaches to gain a more detailed,more comprehensive,and more integrated view on how the PFC governs anxiety and fear and orchestrates adaptive defensive behaviors to hopefully provide a roadmap for the future development of therapies for pathological anxiety.

fear and delay effects on a food chain system with two kinds of different functional responses

For food chain system with three populations, direct predation is the basic interaction between species. Different species often have different predation functional responses, so a food chain system with Holling-II response for middle predator and Beddinton-DeAngelis response for top predator is proposed. Apart from direct predation, predator population can significantly impact the survival of prey population by inducing the prey's fear, but the impact often possesses a time delay. This paper is concentrated to explore how the fear and time delay affect the system stability and the species persistence. By use of Lyapunov functional method and bifurcation theory, the positiveness and boundedness of solutions, local and global behavior of species, the system stability around the equilibrium states and various kinds of bifurcation are investigated. Numerically, some simulations are carried out to validate the main findings and the critical values of the bifurcation parameters of fear and conversion rate are obtained. It is observed that fear and delay can not only stabilize, but also destabilize the system, which depends on the magnitude of the fear and delay. The system varies from unstable to stable due to the continuous increase of the prey's fear by middle predator. Small fear induced by top predator or small delay of the prey's fear can stabilize the system, while they are sufficiently large, the system stability is to be destroyed. Simultaneously, the conversion rate can also change the stability and even make the species to be extinct. Some rich dynamics like multiple stabilities and various types of bistability behaviors are also exhibited, which results in the convergence of the species from one stable equilibrium to another.

Stratum Griseum Periventriculare-mediated fear Emotion Regulates Motor Behavior in Pigeons

A pigeon robot is an ideal experimental animal for research in flying animal robots.The majority of current research publications have entailed electrical stimulation of the motor nuclei to regulate movement forcibly,and although a“virtual fear”behavior model has been proposed,the structure,location,and function of the nuclei that generate fear emotions remain obscure.Previous studies have shown that the Stratum Griseum Periventriculare(SGP)of pigeons is homologous to the mammalian periaqueductal gray(PAG),which plays an essential role in mammalian fear.To reveal the role of fear mediated by the SGP in behavioral regulation,we evaluated the structure and location of the SGP by histologic identification combined with magnetic resonance imaging,and analyzed the behavior of the SGP by electrical stimulation.Finally,the function of the SGP was verified with escape testing and homing experiments in an open field.Our results showed that the SGP is located in the pigeon midbrain and divided into two subregions,the dorsal part of the stratum griseum periventriculare(SGPd)and the ventral part of the stratum griseum periventriculare(SGPv)(the ranges were AP1.5–4.75 mm,ML1.75–6.75 mm,and DV2.2–7.1 mm),and that wired and wireless electrical stimulation freezing was the dominant behavior.In the escape test,SGP electrical stimulation caused the pigeons to flee to a safe place,while in the open-field homing test,electrical stimulation of the SGP induced evasive behavior in pigeons away from their original homing route.These results confirm that the SGP plays a crucial role in fear,and that electrical stimulation of this nucleus induces corresponding fear behaviors.

Dynamic analysis and bifurcation control of a delayed fractional-order eco-epidemiological migratory bird model with fear effect

In this paper, a new delayed fractional-order model including susceptible migratory birds, infected migratory birds and predators is proposed to discuss the spread of diseases among migratory birds. fear of predators is considered in the model, as fear can reduce the reproduction rate and disease transmission rate among prey. First, some basic mathematical results of the proposed model are discussed. Then, time delay is regarded as a bifurcation parameter, and the delay-induced bifurcation conditions for such an uncontrolled system are established. A novel periodic pulse feedback controller is proposed to suppress the bifurcation phenomenon. It is found that the control scheme can successfully suppress the bifurcation behavior of the system, and the pulse width can be arbitrarily selected on the premise of ensuring the control effect. Compared with the traditional time-delay feedback controller, the control scheme proposed in this paper has more advantages in practical application, which not only embodies the advantages of low control cost and easy operation but also caters to the periodic changes of the environment. The proposed control scheme, in particular, remains effective even after the system has been disrupted by a constant. Numerical simulation verifies the correctness of the theoretical results.

The current corona virus disease 2019 outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 started in Wuhan,China in December 2019 and has put the world on alert.To safeguard Chinese citizens and to strengthen global health security,China has made great efforts to control the epidemic.Many in the global community have joined China to limit the epidemic.However,discrimination and prejudice driven by fear or misinformation have been flowing globally,superseding evidence and jeopardizing the anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 efforts.We analyze this phenomenon and its underlying causes and suggest practical solutions.

Sevoflurane plays a reduced role in cognitive impairment compared with isoflurane: limited effect on fear memory retention

Isoflurane and sevoflurane are both inhalation anesthetics,but in clinical application,sevoflurane has been considered to be less suitable for long-term anesthesia because of its catabolic compounds and potential nephrotoxicity.Nevertheless,recent studies have shown that these two inhalation anesthetics are similar in hepatorenal toxicity,cost,and long-term anesthetic effect.Moreover,sevoflurane possibly has less cognitive impact on young mice.In this study,C57BL/6 mice aged 8–10 weeks were exposed to 1.2%isoflurane or 2.4%sevoflurane for 6 hours.Cognitive function and memory were examined in young mice using the novel object recognition,contextual fear conditioning,and cued-fear extinction tests.Western blot assay was performed to detect expression levels of D1 dopamine receptor,catechol-O-methyltransferase,phospho-glycogen synthase kinase-3β,and total glycogen synthase kinase-3βin the hippocampus.Our results show that impaired performance was not detected in mice exposed to sevoflurane during the novel object recognition test.Contextual memory impairment in the fear conditioning test was shorter in the sevoflurane group than the isoflurane group.Long-term sevoflurane exposure did not affect memory consolidation,while isoflurane led to memory consolidation and reduced retention.Downregulation of hippocampal D1 dopamine receptors and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3β/total glycogen synthase kinase-3βand upregulation of catechol-O-methyltransferase may be associated with differing memory performance after exposure to isoflurane or sevoflurane.These results confirm that sevoflurane has less effect on cognitive impairment than isoflurane,which may be related to expression of D1 dopamine receptors and catechol-O-methyltransferase and phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase-3βin the hippocampus.This study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee,Nanjing University,China on November 20,2017(approval No.20171102).

An Ebola virus disease model with fear and environmental transmission dynamics

Recent Ebola virus disease(EVD)outbreaks have been limited not only to the interactions between humans but also to the complex interplay of the environment,human and socio-economic factors.Changes in human behaviour as a result of fear can also affect disease transmission dynamics.In this paper,a compartmental model is used to study the dynamics of EVD incorporating fear and environmental transmission.We formulate a fear dependent contact rate function to measure the rate of person to person,as well as pathogen to person transmissions.The epidemic threshold and the model equilibria are determined and,their stabilities are analysed.The model is validated by fitting it to data from the 2019 and 2020 EVD outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo.Our results suggest that the fear of death from EVD may reduce the transmission and aid the control of the disease,but it is not sufficient to eradicate the disease.Policymakers need to also implement other control measures such as case finding,media campaigns,Quarantine and increase in the number of beds in the Ebola treatment centers,good laboratory services,safe burials and social mobilisation,to eradicate the disease.

In this paper,the theory of"fear injury kidney"in traditional Chinese Medicine is systematically reviewed,and it is found that long-term or excessive psychological changes of fear are likely to damage kidney qi and kidney essence.On this basis,the psychological studies of patients,medical staff and the public during the COVID-19 epidemic in China were analyzed,and fear psychology was found to be prevalent among all kinds of people.Modern researches on"fear injury kidney"have also found that long-term or excessive fear could cause changes in the neuro-endocrine-immune system,which can induce diseases or susceptibility to some diseases.Therefore,during or after the prevalence of COVID-19,different groups of people may have emotional reactions such as stress and fear,which should be paid long-term attention,and the influence of fear on the body cannot be ignored.According to the change rule of psychological state under stress reaction,we should actively respond to and take psychological crisis intervention measures in time to reduce the harm of psychological stress to the body.
