The Hirnantia fauna is a globally-represented,cool water brachiopod fauna that originated and flourished in shallow marine environments at intermediate to low latitudes after the first episode of the end-Ordovician mass *** was well-developed,widely distributed,long in stratigraphical range,and complex in palaeoecological differentiation on the Upper Yangtze Platform of the South China paleoplate,where it has been extensively *** and quantitative analyses show that the FAD of the Hirnantia fauna in South China becomes stratigraphically higher from nearshore to offshore localities on the Yangtze Platform,while the range of the fauna becomes shorter whereas the taxonomic diversity *** its stratigraphical range the diversity of the Hirnantia fauna at nearshore localities consistently decreases,but trends in the opposite direction at offshore,deeper water *** fauna was represented by different communities,subcommunities or associations with changing environmental factors(such as water depth and substrate) at different localities or horizons.

The rarefaction analysis has been conducted to test the species diversity changes of the Early and Middle Permian fusulinacean fauna in South China. The results reveal that the number of species dramatically increased since the earliest Permian and quickly reached the maximum value in the early Zisongian representing the highest species diversity for the whole Early and Middle Permian. The species diversity stabilized in the plateau through the Zisongian; however, it started to decline in the following Longlinian and sustained a longstanding low level during the mid-Early Permian. With the appearance of new fusulinacean taxa with septulum structures, the number of species raised again in the late-Early Permian, followed by a decline in the Middle Permian Neoschwagerina simplex zone. Although the species diversity increased apparently in the Kuhfengian, it never rebounded back to the same level as in the Early Permian. In the mid-Middle Permian, species diversity began to decrease continuously and led to the disappearance of most fusulinacean species by the end of the Middle Permian.

Contribution of soil fauna to the degradation of recalcitrant components in Cinnamomum camphora foliar litter in different-sized gaps in Pinus massoniana plantations

Forest gaps are important in forest dynamics and management, but little is known about how soil fauna influence the degradation of recalcitrant litter components in different-sized forest gaps. This investigation uses litterbags with two different mesh sizes (0.04 and 3 mm) to control the meso- and microfauna entering the bags to quantify the contribution of soil fauna to the degradation of recalcitrant components (including condensed tannins, total phenol, lignin and cellulose) during litter decomposition. The experiment was conducted in seven different forest gap sizes in Pinus massoniana plantations over 1 year. One closed-canopy site (CC) and forest gap sizes of 100, 225, 400, 625, 900, 1225 and 1600 m^2 were created in a P. massoniana plantation in the Sichuan basin of China;the CC was treated as the control. Cinnamomum camphora foliage from local native trees was used in all forest gap experiments. We found the following:(1) Gap size had significant effects on the degradation rates (E) of condensed tannins and lignin and on the contributions of soil fauna;medium-sized gaps also presented high degradation rates. Soil fauna obviously contributed to the degradation of recalcitrant foliar litter components in medium-sized gaps.(2) The highest contribution to degradation (40.98%) was recorded for lignin, and the lowest contribution (0.29%) was recorded for condensed tannins. The results indicate that medium-sized gaps (900 m^2) were conducive to the degradation of recalcitrant litter components by soil fauna.

End-Permian conodont fauna from Dongpan section:Correlation between the deep-and shallow-water facies

This paper systematically investigated the conodonts from the uppermost Permian to the Lower Triassic at the Dongpan Section, Southern Guangxi, South China, and obtained abundant Late Permian conodonts from the syndepositional limestone lenses of beds 3 and 5-2 at this section. One genus and eight species of conodont P1 element including one new species, Neogondolella dongpanensis sp. nov., have been identified. The feature of conodont fauna indicates that conodonts collected from beds 3 and 5 at the Dongpan Section belong to the Neogondolella yini conodont zone, and correspond to bed 24 at the Meishan Section. Based on these conodont data, we suggest that the Neoalbaillella optima radiolarian zone at the Dongpan Section at least extended to the upper part of the N. yini conodont zone.

Heteroptera is an important group among the insect orders,not only for its number of species,but also for its distribution and food preference.A total of 405 species of Heteroptera were identified in the desert areas of Kazakhstan,in which 158 species are distributed in the sandy deserts,105 species in the Solonchak deserts,75 species in the clay deserts,and 67 species in the rocky-rubbly deserts.

The response of soil fauna to the litter decomposition process has received considerable attention,but this effect has not been fully examined in agroforestry systems.A 1-year in situ decomposition experiment was carried out in a pure ginkgo plantation and two ginkgo agroforestry systems using a litterbag method(11 different treatments were tested in three systems).We found that the application of different organic materials(crop residues)produced positive effects on the number of soil fauna in the ginkgo planting systems;the mixture of ginkgo leaves and corn leaves was the best performing *** and Acarina were the predominant groups in the litter bags and were mainly responsible for the differences among the *** mixing promoted the abundance,richness,and diversity of soil fauna,and significant differences regarding the Shannon–Wiener index of the soil fauna were observed among the 11 treatments in *** higher soil MBC(microbial biomass carbon)and MBN(microbial biomass nitrogen)were observed in agroforestry systems than in pure ginkgo *** results suggest that the practice of intercrop residue application plays an important role in enhancing soil ecosystem function in ginkgo agroforestry systems and may ultimately contribute to sustainable intercrop production,soil fertility,and local economic diversity.

The study of the Xishuidong micromammalian fauna, found from Lantian, Shaanxi Province, indicates that both the northern slope of the Qinling Mountains and Sichuan_Guizhou area must belong to the same Oriental Realm in middle_late Middle Pleistocene. The age of the Xishuidong fauna should be later than that of the Gongwangling fauna, and even a little later than that of the Zhongjiawo fauna in age. The fauna is related not only to that of layers 9 and 8 of Peking Man Locality in northern China, but also to the micromammals from Hexian Man Locality in southern China.
