Dry eye disease is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface and can be caused by a variety of iatrogenic interventions,especially ophthalmic surgical procedures.This article reviews the incidence,clinical manifestations,mechanisms and prevention of dry eye disease caused or worsened by cosmetic blepharoplasty,and focus on how to reduce and prevent the occurrence of postoperative dry eye disease and provide the basis for the selection of operation methods and the rational drug during the perioperative period.

Ocular diseases include various anterior and posterior segment diseases. Due to the unique anatomy and physiology of the eye, efficient ocular drug delivery is a great challenge to researchers and pharmacologists. Although there are conventional noninvasive and invasive treatments, such as eye drops,injections and implants, the current treatments either suffer from low bioavailability or severe adverse ocular effects. Alternatively, the emerging nanoscience and nanotechnology are playing an important role in the development of novel strategies for ocular disease therapy. Various active molecules have been designed to associate with nanocarriers to overcome ocular barriers and intimately interact with specific ocular tissues. In this review, we highlight the recent attempts of nanotechnology-based systems for imaging and treating ocular diseases, such as corneal d iseases, glaucoma, retina diseases, and choroid diseases. Although additional work remains, the progress described herein may pave the way to new,highly effective and important ocular nanomedicines.

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) belong to the genus Mastadenovirus, family Adenoviridae, and can cause respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract infections, as well as ocular infections in humans[1]. Till date, a total of 84 unique genotypes of AdVs have been identified and classified as human Mastadenovirus species A to G, and specific types are often associated with certain clinical symptoms, epidemiological settings, and demographic risk groups[2]. Among these species, members of the species HAdV-B (HAdV-3, HAdV-7, HAdV-11, HAdV-16, HAdV-21, HAdV-34, HAdV-35, HAdV-50, etc), HAdV-C (HAdV-1, HAdV-2, HAdV-5, and HAdV-6), and HAdV-E (HAdV-4) have been generally associated with respiratory infections[3]. HAdV infections are mild and self-limited in healthy individuals, whereas they can result in high mortality rates in immunocompetent and immunocompromized patients[4].

AIM：To report the incidence,risk factors and visual outcomes for postoperative endophthalmitis（POE）based on 7-year data from the Malaysian Ministry of Health Cataract Surgery Registry（MOH CSR）.METHODS：Data was collected from the web-based MOH CSR.All consecutive cataract surgery patients from 1st June 2008 to 31st December 2014 were identified.Exclusion criteria were traumatic cataract or previous ocular surgery.Demographic data,ocular co-morbidities,intraoperative details and postoperative visual acuity（VA）at final ophthalmological follow-up were noted.All eyes were taken for analysis.Subjects with POE were compared against subjects with no POE for risk factor assessment using multiple logistic regressions.RESULTS：A total of 163 503 subjects were screened.The incidence of POE was 0.08%（131/163 503）.Demographic POE risk factors included male gender（OR：2.121,95%CI：1.464-3.015）and renal disease（OR：2.867,95%CI：1.503-5.467）.POE risk increased with secondary causes of cataract（OR：3.562,95%CI：1.740-7.288）,uveitis（OR：11.663,95%CI：4.292-31.693）and diabetic retinopathy（OR：1.720,95%CI：1.078-2.744）.Intraoperative factors reducing POE were shorter surgical time（OR：2.114,95%CI：1.473-3.032）,topical or intracameral anaesthesia（OR：1.823,95%CI：1.278-2.602）,posterior chamber intraocular lens（PCIOL;OR：4.992,95%CI：2.689-9.266）and foldable IOL（OR：2.276,95%CI：1.498-3.457）.POE risk increased with posterior capsule rupture（OR：3.773,95%CI：1.915-7.432）and vitreous loss（OR：3.907,95%CI：1.720-8.873）.Postoperative VA of 6/12 or better was achieved in 15.27%（20/131）subjects with POE.CONCLUSION：This study concurs with other studies regarding POE risk factors.Further strengthening of MOH CSR data collection process will enable deeper analysis and optimization of POE treatment.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the safety of hair essence containing 0.05%purified bee venom(HE-PBV)on the skin and eyes of New Zealand White rabbits.METHODS:HE-PBV which contained 0.05%PBV,purified water,and glycerin,was used as the test substance.The skin-irritation test(SIT)and eye-irritation test(EIT)were conducted according to the Draize method.On the SIT,HE-PBV(0.5 m L)dropped gauze was attached both intact and abraded skin for 24 h.The other side of the skin was used as control.After 24 and 72 h,the treatment site was observed and scored according to evaluation criteria for skin reactions.On the EIT,the rabbits were divided into two groups:eye-washed(three rabbits)and non-eye-washed(six rabbits).HE-PBV(0.1 m L)was squirted into the right eye of rabbits.The left eye was untreated and used as a control.Then,20-30-s later,the eyes of rabbits in the eye-washed group were washed with^50 m L of physiologic(0.9%)salt solution.Then,1,2,3,4 and 7 d after the start of the EIT,the eyes and behavior of the rabbits were observed.The degree of eye irritation elicited by HE-PBV was determined in three steps and then the criteria of the classification of eye-irritation scores.RESULTS:The SIT revealed erythema and edema at the site of HE-PBV application.At 72 h,the body weight of rabbits was reduced slightly,but other symptoms(except erythema and edema)were not observed.The Primary Irritation Index score was0.6,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a slight irritant.The EIT did not show mortality or body-weight fluctuation,but hyperemic conjunctiva and eyelid closure were noted after HE-PBV administration.Except for these results,the score for the ophthalmic response on days 1,2,3,4 and 7 was 0,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a non-irritant.CONCLUSION:These data suggest that HE-PBV did not elicit eye irritation,but was a slight irritant to the skin of rabbits;the latter slight would have been due to the excipients used in manufacture of the hair essence because PBV has been shown to be safe.

The multiple regression formulas and correlation of ocular components with refractive errors are presented by Gaussian optics. The refractive error changing rate for the cornea and lens power, the axial length, anterior chamber depth(ACD) and vitreous chamber depth(VCD) are calculated, including nonlinear terms for more accurate rate functions than the linear theory. Our theory, consistent with the empirical data, shows that the Pearson correlation coefficients for spherical equivalent(SE) and ocular components are highest for SE with axial length, ACD and VCD and weakest for corneal power, lens power and lens thickness. Moreover, our regression formulas show the asymmetric feature of the correlation that the axial length, ACD and VCD are more strongly correlated(with higher negative regression constants) with refractive errors in eyes with hyperopia than in eyes with myopia, particularly for severe hyperopia.

AIM: To study ocular axial lengths in pediatric subjects without intraocular pathology. METHODS: An Institutional Review Board-approved consecutive retrospective chart review of axial lengths measured in pediatric subjects who underwent examination under anesthesia due to positive family history of retinoblastoma or other inherited ocular disease. Only subjects without any intraocular pathology in either eye were included. Subjects were stratified into age groups. An axial length model using a logarithmic regression algorithm was calculated.RESULTS: Data from 330 eyes of 165 subjects were included in the study. The mean age at the time of examination was 30.62(SD 18.04)mo. The steepest increase in axial length was present during the first 10 mo of life. After 36 mo, there was no statistically significant axial length growth. CONCLUSION: This study presents the biggest series of pediatric axial lengths in healthy eyes. The axial length model developed with these data may assist in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of pediatric ophthalmic diseases.

AIM： To address the association between serum total IgE levels and age-related cataract in adults. METHODS： The study participants consisted of 1052 adults aged 40y or older in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010. We performed multivariable logistic regression analyses using the quartile cut-points of total IgE levels. RESULTS： The odds ratios （ORs） for nuclear and any cataract with ≥267 kU/L of serum IgE levels were 1.75 [95% confidence intervals （CI）, 1.04-2.96] and 2.00 （95%CI, 1.22-3.27）, respectively, comparing to 35-87 kU/L. Interestingly, participants with ≤35 kU/L of IgE levels （OR, 1.67; 95%CI, 1.02-2.72） also had higher risk for any cataract than those with 35-87 kU/L. The risk for any cataract （OR, 1.48; 95%CI, 1.03-2.13） was higher in participants with high total IgE levels （〉150 kU/L）, comparing to normal participants. CONCLUSION： Our findings indicate a J-shaped relationship between serum IgE levels and age-related cataract.

The indications of point-of-care ultrasound(POCUS) in the management of multiple trauma patients have been expanding. Although computed tomography(CT) scan of the orbit remains the gold standard for imaging orbital trauma, ultrasound is a quick, safe, and portable tool that can be performed bedside. Here we report two patients who had severe eye injuries with major visual impairment where surgeon-performed POCUS was very useful. One had a foreign body injury while the other had blunt trauma. POCUS was done using a linear probe under sterile conditions with minimum pressure on the eyes. Ultrasound showed a foreign body at the back of the left eye globe touching the eye globe in the first patient, and was normal in the second patient. Workup using CT scan, fundsocopy, optical coherence tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging of the orbits confirmed these findings. The first patient had vitreous and sub retinal haemorrhage and a full thickness macular hole of the left eye, while the second had traumatic optic neuropathy. POCUS gave accurate information concerning severe eye injuries. Trauma surgeons and emergency physicians should be trained in performing ocular ultrasound for eye injuries.

This narrative review aimed to have an algorithmic approach to microphthalmos by a systematic search.The definition can be related to a number of special phenotypes.In the more challenging cases of complex microphthalmos,relative anterior microphthalmos,and nanophthalmos,the surgeon can approach these cases more safely if they have a deep understanding of the anatomical variations and ideal formulae for intraocular lens computation and knows how to avoid intra-and post-operative complications.In this article,we review the criteria by which we recognize and describe pre-,intra-,and post-operative considerations,as well as discuss the ideal intraocular lenses for microphthalmos,given the intricate varieties of small eye phenotypes.
