TGF-β_3 inhibits the increased gene expressions of pulmonary surfactant proteins induced by dexamethasone in fetal rat lung in vitro

Objective To determine the effects of transforming growth factor β 3 (TGF β 3) on expressions of surfactant proteins (SPs). Methods Northern blot hybridization and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT PCR) were employed to determine the SP A, SP B and SP C mRNA levels of cultured lung explants and type Ⅱ cells from fetal rat lungs. Results TGF β 3 alone did not affect the expressions of SPs either in explants or in type Ⅱ cells. However, TGF β 3 did inhibit the increase of SP B, SP C mRNA levels caused by dexamethasone (100 nmol/L), in a dose dependent manner. Furthermore, TGF β 3 had no direct inhibition on the increase of SP B, SP C mRNA induced by dexamethasone in type Ⅱ cells, but had an indirect inhibitory effect mediated by fibroblasts. Conclusion TGF β 3 plays an important inhibitory role in the development of pulmonary surfactant proteins. The present study may provide a possible explanation for the unideal effect of glucocorticoids in the prevention of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.

This study aims at studying space expressions in Spoken Jordanian Arabic （SJA）. Moreover, it aims at discussingthe pragmatics of space expressions in SJA. The researchers use two methods to collect colloquial spaceexpressions. Firstly, the researchers use eight specific images for a little girl who is asked to determine her ***, space expressions are extracted through unstructured interviews and general observations. It has beenfound that using space expressions is vital for speakers. Moreover, some space expressions do not carry a pragmaticfunction. Some of space expressions may express different pragmatic functions, such as hospitality, threat, andencouragement. Some of the colloquial space expressions are culture-specific; they would not be clear apart fromtheir culture, since they might not be found in another dialect or language.

We investigated, in young healthy participants, how the affective content of subliminally presented priming images and their specific visual attributes impacted conscious perception of facial expressions. The priming images were broadly categorized as aggressive, pleasant, or neutral and further subcategorized by the presence of a face and by the centricity (egocentric or allocentric vantage-point) of the image content. Participants responded to the emotion portrayed in a pixelated target-face by indicating via key-press if the expression was angry or neutral. Response time to the neutral target face was significantly slower when preceded by face primes, compared to non-face primes (p < 0.05, Bonferroni corrected). In contrast, faster RTs were observed when angry target faces were preceded by face compared to non-face primes. In addition, participants’ performance was worse when a priming image contained an egocentric face compared to when it contained either an allocentric face or an egocentric non-face. The results suggest a significant impact of the visual features of the priming image on conscious perception of face expression.

Facial expressions are the straight link for showing human emotions. Psychologists have established the universality of six prototypic basic facial expressions of emotions which they believe are consistent among cultures and races. However, some recent cross-cultural studies have questioned and to some degree refuted this cultural universality. Therefore, in order to contribute to the theory of cultural specificity of basic expressions, from a composite viewpoint of psychology and HCI (Human Computer Interaction), this paper presents a methodical analysis of Western-Caucasian and East-Asian prototypic expressions focused on four facial regions: forehead, eyes-eyebrows, mouth and nose. Our analysis is based on facial expression recognition and visual analysis of facial expression images of two datasets composed by four standard databases CK+, JAFFE, TFEID and JACFEE. A hybrid feature extraction method based on Fourier coefficients is proposed for the recognition analysis. In addition, we present a cross-cultural human study applied to 40 subjects as a baseline, as well as one comparison of facial expression recognition performance between the previous cross-cultural tests from the literature. With this work, it is possible to clarify the prior considerations for working with multicultural facial expression recognition and contribute to identifying the specific facial expression differences between Western-Caucasian and East-Asian basic expressions of emotions.

Microarray gene expression measurements are reported, used and archived usually to high numerical precision. However, properties of mRNA molecules, such as their low stability and availability in small copy numbers, and the fact that measurements correspond to a population of cells, rather than a single cell, makes high precision meaningless. Recent work shows that reducing measurement precision leads to very little loss of information, right down to binary levels. In this paper we show how properties of binary spaces can be useful in making inferences from microarray data. In particular, we use the Tanimoto similarity metric for binary vectors, which has been used effectively in the Chemoinformatics literature for retrieving chemical compounds with certain functional properties. This measure, when incorporated in a kernel framework, helps recover any information lost by quantization. By implementing a spectral clustering framework, we further show that a second reason for high performance from the Tanimoto metric can be traced back to a hitherto unnoticed systematic variability in array data: Probe level uncertainties are systematically lower for arrays with large numbers of expressed genes. While we offer no molecular level explanation for this systematic variability, that it could be exploited in a suitable similarity metric is a useful observation in itself. We further show preliminary results that working with binary data considerably reduces variability in the results across choice of algorithms in the preprocessing stages of microarray analysis.

Research has shown that dissatisfied couples in the relationship commonly exhibit facial expressions of contempt in interactions. At this point, based on the study of cognition and physiology, researchers were able to predict by longitudinal studies the probability of divorce in a marriage, with accuracy of up to 94%. Our objective was to investigate whether the occurrence of facial expressions of disgust and contempt in married women is associated with marital dissatisfaction. This is an experimental study that correlated, through filmed interviews, the frequency of facial expressions of disgust and disgust (Facial Action Coding System) to the Marital State’s Golombok Rust Inventory, in a sample composed of 20 women. Data analysis based on the Spearman Correlation Test showed a positive correlation between facial expressions of disgust and disdain and conjugal dissatisfaction (rs = 0.2198, p = 0.0280), corroborating the data in the literature.

A Study on Stock expressions from the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

Metaphor is a hot topic of current linguistic study. Essentially, metaphor is that people using the familiar, concrete conceptual construction to construct and comprehend the strange and abstract one. Since the end of 1980 s, with the establishment of the joint-stock enterprises, people keep the passion for the stock market. And then a large quantity of terms of the stock appear in our life, most of them are of metaphorical meanings. This paper studies the conceptual metaphors in stock terms and the forms of K lines from the view of conceptual metaphor theory. The aims of this paper is to broaden the scope of language study, and make a interdisciplinary research, which can aid us to understand the nature of language in a new perspective. Moreover, it also provide a new view of studying the stock terms.
