With more application of welding technology in important structures more attention was paid to the evaluation of the safety of welded structures, the life prediction and decision to repair the welded structures. Based on material fracture mechanism and Chinese standard of safety evaluations of pressure vessels, an expert system was developed to evaluate the safety of welded pressure vessels. The system can analyze the weld defects in a pressure vessel, convert different kinds of defects into equivalent cracks and obtain their equivalent sizes. Furthermore, the system can calculate the stress and strain in the positions of weld defects and make decision on whether the defects are tolerable or not according to the code. When it is tolerable, the system will calculate the safety margin. The fatigue life can be predicted if the defects undergo fatigue load too. Moreover, data bases are built for storing mechanical properties of material and evaluated results.

Atmospheric icing may have a great impact on the overall design and safety running of power transmission lines or railway contact wires. For engineers attempting to determine ice loads in a specific area,knowledge of historical ice events and ice type for that area would be extremely valuable information. However,there is no systematic ice accretion database that can be used to help engineers. The prolonged 2008 ice storm of central and southern China caused extensive damage to the electrical installations and railway contact wires. As a result,the transmission provider of the state has deployed substantial efforts to mitigate the effects of future ice storms. This paper describes the development of a knowledge-based decision support system for icing prediction and melting control strategy. The knowledge acquisition process is conducted based on the experimental and theoretical research. The system can predict if icing presents in the current condition,and estimate the possible icing types based on the meteorological parameters such as air temperature,relative humidity,wind speed,which are obtained by corresponding sensors. When icing presents,then the system will make a melting decision using the heat generated by the currents flowing in the wires based on the melting algorithm. Simultaneously the ice scene is monitored for security by real-time videos. This system can be used in power transmission lines or railway contact wires.

A new structure of ESKD (expert system based on knowledge discovery system KD (D&K)) is first presented on the basis of KD (D&K)-a synthesized knowledge discovery system based on double-base (database and knowledge base) cooperating mechanism. With all new features, ESKD may form a new research direction and provide a great probability for solving the wealth of knowledge in the knowledge base. The general structural frame of ESKD and some sub-systems among ESKD have been described, and the dynamic knowledge base based on double-base cooperating mechanism has been emphased on. According to the result of demonstrative experi- ment, the structure of ESKD is effective and feasible.

A New Fire Detection Method Using a Multi-expert system Based on Color Dispersion, Similarity and Centroid Motion in Indoor Environment

In this paper, a video fire detection method is proposed, which demonstrated good performance in indoor environment. Three main novel ideas have been introduced. Firstly, a flame color model in RGB and HIS color space is used to extract pre-detected regions instead of traditional motion differential method, as it’s more suitable for fire detection in indoor environment. Secondly, according to the flicker characteristic of the flame, similarity and two main values of centroid motion are proposed. At the same time, a simple but effective method for tracking the same regions in consecutive frames is established. Thirdly,a multi-expert system consisting of color component dispersion,similarity and centroid motion is established to identify *** proposed method has been tested on a very large dataset of fire videos acquired both in real indoor environment tests and from the Internet. The experimental results show that the proposed approach achieved a balance between the false positive rate and the false negative rate, and demonstrated a better performance in terms of overall accuracy and F standard with respect to other similar fire detection methods in indoor environment.

A quality assurance expert system, ZJSYS, has been developed for car cylinder casting by use of artificial intelligence technology and C++ for windows. The important feature of this expert system is that it draws not only qualitative conclusions but also quantitative ones in the therapy of defects. ZJSYS uses an expert reasoning strategy based on the rule models with the certainty factor. Reasoning strategy combines forward chaining and backward chaining together to perform qualitative analysis of defects. Meanwhile quantitative analysis of defects is completed by use of mathematical statistics and the principle of optimum. Management system that possesses the functions of adding, modifying and deleting was developed in knowledge base. To meet the practical requirements, the management model of data storage and statistics were developed. Actual run of ZJSYS showed that it played a significant role in improving product quality and reduce rejection ratio.

By gathering and analyzing information, summed up the important parameters and influencing factors of the glutamic acid fermentation process, through the fermentation process and expert system knowledge, learning and research, design expert system for glutamic acid fermentation process. The system interface is written in VC + +, the kernel using the expert system tool CLIPS. Database and knowledge base of expert systems, data, facts and experiences, to save the glutamic acid fermentation process by an independent inference engine to achieve its reasoning process, and has a good interactive interface to provide effective guidance for the production process.

The annual worldwide yield losses due to pests are estimated to be billions of dollars. Integrated pest management （IPM） is one of the most important components of crop production in most agricultural areas of the world, and the effectiveness of crop protection depends on accurate and timely diagnosis of phytosanitary problems. Accurately identifying and treatment depends on the method which used in disease and insect pests diagnosis. Identifying plant diseases is usually difficult and requires a plant pathologist or well-trained technician to accurately describe the case. Moreover, quite a few diseases have similar symptoms making it difficult for non-experts to distinguish disease correctly. Another method of diagnosis depends on comparison of the concerned case with similar ones through one image or more of the symptoms and helps enormously in overcoming difficulties of non-experts. The old adage ＇a picture is worth a thousand words＇ is crucially relevant. Considering the user＇s capability to deal and interact with the expert system easily and clearly, a webbased diagnostic expert-system shell based on production rules （i.e., IF 〈 effects 〉 THEN 〈 causes 〉） and frames with a color image database was developed and applied to corn disease diagnosis as a case study. The expert-system shell was made on a 32-bit multimedia desktop microcomputer. The knowledge base had frames, production rules and synonym words as the result of interview and arrangement. It was desired that 80% of total frames used visual color image data to explain the meaning of observations and conclusions. Visual color image displays with the phrases of questions and answers from the expert system, enables users to identify any disease, makes the right decision, and chooses the right treatment. This may increase their level of understanding of corn disease diagnosis. The expert system can be applied to diagnosis of other plant pests or diseases by easy changes to the knowledge base.
