Synthesis and Compressive Response of Microcellular Foams Fabricated from Thermally expandable Microspheres

Cellular foams are widely applied as protective and energy absorption materials in both civil and military fields. A facile and simple one-step heating method to fabricate polymeric foams is measured by adopting thermally expandable microspheres(TEMs). The ideal foaming parameters for various density foams were determined. Moreover, a mechanical testing machine and split Hopkinson bar(SHPB) were utilized to explore the quasi-static and dynamic compressive properties. Results showed that the cell sizes of the as-prepared TEMs foams were in the micrometer range of 11 μm to 20 μm with a uniform cell size distribution. All the foams exhibited good compressive behavior under both quasi-static and high strain rate conditions, and were related to both foam densities and strain rates. The compressive strength of the TEMs foams at 8400s^(-1) was up to 4 times higher than that at 10^(-4)s^(-1). The effects exerted by the strain rate and sample density were evaluated by a power law equation. With increasing density, the strain rate effect was more prominent. At quasistatic strain rates below 3000s^(-1) regime, initial cell wall buckling and subsequent cellular structure flattening were the main failure mechanisms. However, in the high strain rate(HSR) regime(above 5000s^(-1)), the foams were split into pieces by the following transverse inertia force.

In this paper,we introduced a novel method to prepare the few-layer nitrogen-doped graphene(FNG)from expandable graphite with *** super-capacitive properties of FNG were thoroughly characterized by a three-electrode system,and the results showed the FNG electrode achieved a specific capacitance as high as 83.8 mF/cm2 together with excellent cycling *** method could be a novel approach to combine the pseudo-capacitors and electric double layer capacitors.

Application of Thermally expandable Microspheres in Adhesives: Review

Adhesives are used to bond various substrates such as metals, polymers, ceramics, rubber, wood and wood-based products. The use of adhesive as bonding agent rather than mechanical fasteners like nails results in the potential for reduced cost and weight of assemblies. However, adhesives are unprotected to a wide range of conditions, such as thermo-mechanical cycling in the environment, creep and fatigue imposed by structural joint configurations, and residual stress due to mismatch of thermal expansion between adhesives and objects. Thus, there will be a need for development of new chemistries and processes for easy repair and reprocessing of bonded structures are becoming of current great interest for the industries. In some cases, to improve the protection of various items/objects during handling and transportation, currently used protective products such as padded wraps, envelopes, packages and containers need to be modified. One technology which can solve the problem is the adhesives modified with thermally expandable particles (TEPs) which can be dismounted by heating the joint in a few seconds. The expandable composition is providing the necessary protective insulation and cushioning required in packages and containers. This paper reviews the application of unexpanded microspheres in the adhesive segment.

Covered self expandable metallic stent with flared plastic one inside for pancreatic pseudocyst avoiding stent dislodgement

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided drainage has recently been recommended for increasing the drainage rate of endoscopically managed pancreatic fluid collections and decreasing the morbidity associated with conventional endoscopic trans-mural drainage. The type of stent used for endoscopic drainage is currently a major area of interest. A covered self expandable metallic stent (CSEMS) is an alternative to conventional drainage with plastic stents because it offers the option of providing a larger-diameter access fi stula for drainage, and may increase the fi nal success rate. One problem with CSEMS is dislodgement, so a metallic stent with flared or looped ends at both extremities may be the best option. An 85-year-old woman with severe comorbidity was treated with percutaneous approach for a large (20 cm) pancreatic pseudocyst with corpuscolated material inside. This approach failed. The patient was transferred to our institute for EUS-guided transmural drainage. EUS confi rmed a large, anechoic cyst with hyperechoic material inside. Because the cyst was large and contained mixed and corpusculated fluid, we used a metallic stent for drainage. To avoid migration of the stent and potential mucosal growth above the stent, a plastic prosthesis (7 cm, 10 Fr) with flaps at the tips was inserted inside the CSEMS. Two months later an esophagogastroduodenoscopy was done, and showed patency of the SEMS and plastic stents, which were then removed with a polypectomy snare. The patient experienced no further problems.

Treatment of transplant renal artery pseudoaneurysm using expandable hydrogel coils: A case report and review of literature

Transplant renal artery(TRA) pseudoaneurysm can result in bleeding, infection, graft dysfunction and graft loss. We report the management of a renal transplant recipient who presented five months after renal transplantation with deterioration of renal function, who was found to have TRA pseudoaneurysm and TRA stenosis. Both were treated radiologically by using expandable hydrogel coils(EHC) in combination with stenting. Improvement in clinical, biochemical and radiological parameters were observed after the intervention. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the transplant literature on the use of EHC for the treatment of a TRA pseudoaneurysm.

The Geometry of Felix Escrig. Simplified ModellingTechniques for Modular Deployable Structures ofexpandable Frames

This paper catalogues the morphology of modular deployable structures of expandable frames developed by the late Felix Escrig at the University of Seville, Spain. The research describes the geometric logic behind these structures, proposes simplified graphic methods for their design, and outlines their characteristics according to their level of geometric precision, structural stability and deployability. Finally, the paper establishes tools and guidelines for their future development.

Portal vein stenosis after pancreatectomy following neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy for pancreatic cancer

Extrahepatic portal vein (PV) stenosis has various causes, such as tumor encasement, pancreatitis and as a postsurgical complication. With regard to post-pancreaticoduodenectomy, intraoperative radiation therapy with/ without PV resection is reported to be associated with PV stenosis. However, there has been no report of PV stenosis after pancreatectomy following neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (NACRT). Here we report the cases of three patients with PV stenosis after pancreatectomy and PV resection following gemcitabine-based NACRT for pancreatic cancer and their successful treatment with stent placement. We have performed NACRT in 18 patients with borderline resectable pancreatic cancer since 2005. Of the 15 patients who completed NACRT, nine had undergone pancreatectomy. Combined portal resection was performed in eight of the nine patients. We report here three patients with PV stenosis, and thus the ratio of post-operative PV stenosis in patients with PV resection following NACRT is 37.5% in this series. We encountered no case of PV stenosis among 22 patients operated with PV resection for pancreatobiliary cancer without NACRT during the same period. A relationship between PV stenosis and NACRT is suspected, but further investigation is required to determine whether NACRT has relevance to PV stenosis.

Comparison of clinical features and stent placement outcomes between airway stenosis caused by primary pulmonary malignancies and that caused by primary non-pulmonary malignancies

Background: Primary pulmonary malignancies (PPMs) and non-pulmonary malignancies (PNPMs) may result in airway stenosis requiring stenting. This study aimed to compare and evaluate the clinical features and stent placement outcomes of airway stenosis caused by PPMs and PNPMs. Methods: A total of 141 patients with malignant airway stenosis who underwent Micro-Tech stent placements between January 2004 and October 2017 at Department of Respiratory Medicine, Beijing Tian Tan Hospital, Capital Medical University were divided into PPM (n= 100) and PNPM groups (n = 41). Patients’ clinical features and stent placement outcomes were collected and analyzed. Chi-square test was used to compare the categorical variables, while independent- or paired-sample t test was used to compare the continuous variables. Results: There were no significant differences in age, sex, treatment history, respiratory symptoms, and incidence of obstructive pneumonia between groups. Multiple airway involvement (63.0% vs. 31.7%;χ^2=11.459, P= 0.001) and atelectasis (17.0% vs. 2.4%;χ^25.536, P= 0.019) were more common in the PPM group, while extraluminal obstruction (24.4% vs. 6.0%;χ^28.033, P= 0.005) was more common in the PNPM group. Before stenting, the American Thoracic Society Dyspnea Index (ADI) and Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) scores showed no significant differences between groups (all P > 0.05). After stenting, a satisfactory rate of symptom improvement was achieved in both groups (98.0% and 100.0% in the PPM and PNPM groups, respectively;χ^2 0.016, P= 0.898);ADI and KPS scores, which showed no significant differences between groups (all P > 0.05), were significantly improved in each group (all P < 0.001). Complications after stenting could be effectively managed using bronchoscopic procedures. Conclusions: Among cases of malignant airway stenosis requiring stenting, those caused by PPM are more likely to involve multiple airways and are associated with atelectasis, while those caused by

Adhesives for the Paper Packaging Industry: An Overview

Today, packaging plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality of products during uses by providing safeguarding against physical, chemical and environmental challenges. While polymer-based packaging material has been very extensively used, there has been a recent move to paper-based packaging products because of their economic and environmentally-friendly nature. Currently, Paper and paper-based board materials have been used as packaging material for food products, and e-commerce business. Adhesives in packaging industries are critical to the structure of most paper and paper board packaging, whether applied during the process of conversion and on the packaging line. From a production point of view, adhesive choice can significantly affect process line efficiency and production performance. Adhesive types used in paper industries are water-based adhesives both synthetic and bio-polymer based (starch, cellulose, protein and itaconic acid), Solvent-based adhesives (polyurethane and acrylic-based) and 100% solids adhesives like heat sealing adhesive and hot melts. More recently, water-based heat-expandable adhesive having thermally insulative and cushion-like properties has been provided for use in protective packages and wrap. Here, we aim to present an overview of the research trend of adhesives in the paper packaging industry. The overview summarizes the different adhesives for paper packaging industries.

Minimally Invasive Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures: Technical Report and Mid-Term Outcomes

Background: Traditional open instrumentation may cause surgical complications due to fragile bones and induce medical comorbidities in senile patients. Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are palliative augmentation procedures that have been associated with increased risks of cement leakage, adjacent fractures and non-union. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe a novel approach for the union of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with minimally invasive open reduction and internal fixation. Patients and Methods: Seven consecutive patients with intractable back pain without neurological deficits due to osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures were treated using minimally invasive fixation with intra-vertebral expandable pillars and artificial bone substitute. The clinical symptoms and image findings were recorded. Results: All of the patients reported relief of back pain, and the height of the vertebral bodies was well restored. X-ray findings obtained 2 to 4 years after the procedures showed fracture healing and favorable formation of the callus confirmed in the anterior longitudinal ligament. Conclusion: This mini-open procedure with intravertebral devices is an effective and reliable technique for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures and may avoid complications related to traditional open spinal instrumentation procedures and augmentation with bone cement.
