Impact of Chronic Stress on Attention Control:Evidence from Behavioral and event-related potential Analyses

Chronic stress affects brain function,so assessing its hazards is important for mental *** overcome the limitations of behavioral data,we combined behavioral and event-related potentials(ERPs)in an attention network *** task allowed us to differentiate between three specific aspects of attention:alerting,orienting,and ***-one participants under chronic stress and 31 non-stressed participants were *** the performance level,the chronically stressed group showed a significantly slower task response and lower *** ERP measures,smaller cue-N1,cueN2,and larger cue-P3 amplitudes were found in the stressed group,indicating that this group was less able to assign attention to effective information,i.e.,they made inefficient use of cues and had difficulty in maintaining *** addition,the stressed group showed larger target-N2 amplitudes,indicating that this group needed to allocate more cognitive resources to deal with the conflict targets *** analysis revealed lower target-P3 amplitudes in the stressed than in the non-stressed *** differences associated with the attention networks were found at the ERP *** the stressed group,excessive depletion of resources led to changes in attention *** this study,we examined the effects of chronic stress on individual executive function from a neurological *** results may benefit the development of interventions to improve executive function in chronically stressed individuals.

Effects of different cue positions on evoked potentials in the cerebral cortex during global and local processing of compound stimuli A study of event-related potential

BACKGROUND： Previous studies of attentional control have focused primarily on pre-cue control of attentional cue and direction. OBJECTIVE： To measure the differences in electrical activity of brain cells while processing pre-cue and post-cue compound stimuli, and to explore brain electrical activity during global and local processing of compound stimuli according to electroencephalogram （EEG） recordings. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A within-subject design study was performed at the School of Psychology, State Key Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning, Beijing Normal University, China from March to May 2006. PARTICIPANTS： A total of 30 healthy, undergraduate students, aged 17-24 years, comprising 12 males and 18 females, were voluntarily enrolled from Beijing Normal University. Subjects exhibited normal or corrected-to-normal visual acuity. No significant non signal wave drift was detected during testing. METHODS： A total of 30 subjects were subjected to pre-cue and post-cue compound stimulus processing using event-related potential and EEG recordings. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Evoked potential was recorded in different brain regions utilizing event-related potential to observe hemispheric symmetry, cue consistency and global-local features. RESULTS： Pre-cue compound stimuli resulted in hemispheric asymmetry for early wave （N1） and late wave （P3） in anterior brain regions. Early- and late-wave induced hemispheric asymmetry for electrode points （O1, 02, P3, P4, Pz, F3, F4, F7, F8, Fz, FP1, FP2, T7, TS, C3, C4, and Cz） during processing of pre-cue compound stimuli （P 〈 0.05）. Post-cue compound stimuli did not induce hemispheric asymmetry of brain waves induced by the above-described electrode points. No significant differences in global and local responses were determined during processing of post-cue compound stimuli. event-related potential （ERP） studies of cognitive function in Parkinson＇s disease （PD） have focused on P300 and N270. However, little is known regarding face recognition ERP in PD. The present study assessed cognitive function in PD patients using neuropsychological scales and analyzed N170 of visuospatial function impairment （VFI） in PD. Results showed that Montreal cognitive assessment can be used for assessing cognitive impairment when visuospatial functioning is changed during the early stage of PD. Face recognition has clinical significance for detecting changes in visuospatial functioning. However, N170 is not sensitive for detection of VFI in PD, which implies that VFI does not appear in the stage of structure coding in face recognition. In addition, VFI affects face recognition.

Orthographic Processing of Developmental Dyslexic Children in China: Evidence from an event-related potential Study

Objective:This study aimed to explore the orthographic processing of simplified Chinese characters in developmental dyslexic children in Kashgar,Xinjiang,China,and provide a theoretical basis for intervention strategies for developmental dyslexia in ***:Using event-related potential(ERP)measures,18 developmental dyslexic children and 23 typically developing children performed a character decision task with three types of stimuli:real characters(RCs),pseudocharacters(PCs),and noncharacters(NCs).Results:Behavioral results showed that the control children displayed a faster and higher accurate performance than the dyslexic children across PCs and *** data revealed that the RCs and PCs elicited a stronger P200 than the *** with the RCs and NCs,children in the control group showed more N400 negatives for *** is worth mentioning that dyslexic children did not show any difference on N400,which reflected the insufficient orthographic processing of dyslexic children in ***:These results show that Chinese dyslexic children had orthographic processing defects.

Objective:This study aimed to investigate the emotion regulation effect of Baduanjin Qigong on college ***:The late positive potential(LPP)components were recorded while performing emotional pictures from 12 college students with Baduanjin Qigong experience and 12 with no experience of any mind–body ***:Under positive emotional stimuli,greater LPP amplitudes were observed in the experimental group in the frontal,central,and temporal areas than in the control *** negative emotional stimuli,greater LPP amplitudes were found in the experimental group in the prefrontal area and smaller amplitudes in the occipital area than in the control ***:The results reveal the emotion regulation effect on the event-related potential of Baduanjin Qigong to college *** findings suggest that the regulatory effect of Baduanjin Qigong on emotional stimulation may be a possible reason for reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Components and sequential changes in event-related potential induced by gaze orientation processing under a reflective attention cue paradigm

Gaze orientation induces activation of relevant brain regions, presents differences in specificity and time course, and is exhibited in patients with brain injury. However, the components of activated event-related potential remain controversial. Previous studies of behavior and cognitive neuroscience related to gaze orientation investigated conscious attention of visual orientation. The present study explored gaze orientation processing-induced event-related potential components and changes with time using reflective orientation of visual attention under a reflective attention cue paradigm. Visual attention processing of gaze orientation was recorded using event-related potential and electroencephalographic recording. Results demonstrated that the reflective attention cue task evoked early directing attention negativity and anterior directing attention negativity, but did not trigger late directing attention positivity. These results suggest that reflective attention occurs over a short time of visual stimulus presentation. During the early stage of attention processing, early directing attention negativity and anterior directing attention negativity were detected, but late directing attention positivity did not occur. These results confirmed reflectivity and time-course superiority of gaze orientation attention processing.

Icon memory research under different time pressures and icon quantities based on event-related potential

In order to obtain related brain electrical components and neural bases of physiology assessment of icon elements in a digital human-computer interface the modified sample-delay matching task experimental paradigm is used under different time pressures 4 000 and 2 000 ms and different icon quantities three five and ten icons on icon memory based on event-related potential ERP *** results demonstrate that P300 has significant volatility changes and the maximum amplitude around the middle line of the parietal area PZ and P200 has obvious volatility changes around the middle line of the frontal and central area FCZ during icon cognition.P300 and P200 amplitudes increase as tasks become more *** P300 latency is positively correlated with task difficulty. ERP research on the characteristics of icon memory will be an important reference standard in guiding user neurocognitive behavior and physiology assessment on interface usability.

Effect of Electro-acupuncture Intervention on Cognition Attention Bias in Heroin Addiction Abstinence—A Dot-probe-based event-related potential Study

Objective：To study the changes of cognitive attention-related brain function in the heroin addicts before and after electro-acupuncture（EA） intervention for exploring the concerned neuro-mechanism of addictive relapse and the central action role of EA ***：Adopting event-related potential（ERP） technique,the ERP at 64 electrode spots in 10 heroin addicts（test group） were recorded before and after EA intervention with dot-probe experimental form during implementing cognitive task on positive emotional clue （PEC）,negative emotional clues（NEC）,and heroin-related clue（HRC）.The P200 amplitude components on the selected observation points（Fz,Cz,and Pz） were analyzed and compared with those obtained from 10 healthy subjects as the ***：Before EA,the ERP of attention on HRC in the test group was higher than that on PEC and NEC（P0.05） and significantly higher than that in the control group（P0.05）;after EA,the P200 amplitude of attention on HRC at Cz and Pz was significantly lowered（P0.05） and that on PEC at Fz was significantly elevated（P0.05）.After EA,the P200 amplitude at Pz was ranked as NECPECHRC,but in the control group,it showed PECHRC at all three observation points and PECNEC at ***：Heroin addicts show attention bias to HRC,which could be significantly reduced by EA intervention,illustrating that EA could effectively inhibit the attention bias to heroin and so might have potential for lowering the relapse rate.

Task Co-Representation in Aging: An event-related potential Study

The goal of the present study was to investigate age-related changes in attentional allocation for shared task representations during joint performance;event-related potentials were recorded while participants performed a modified visual three-stimulus oddball task, both alone and together with another participant. Younger adults and older adults (14 each) participated in the study. Participants were required to identify rare target stimuli while ignoring frequent standards, as well as rare non-targets assigned to a partner’s action (i.e., no-go stimuli for one’s own task). ERP component, nogo-P3 and P3b were measured to investigate the inhibition and the attentional allocation to the partner’s stimuli. Results showed that younger adults elicited larger frontal nogo P3 and parietal P3b for non-targets in the joint than in the individual condition. Contrary to expectation, older adults induced frontal no-go P3 in the joint condition not in the individual condition. In the sharing of the task with another, the result suggested that the efficiency of matching of incoming information with the representation of the other’s task declined with age, whereas aging did not affect the suppression of incorrect preparation of motor responses instigated by this representation.
