this paper proposes a method for obtaining a reasonably accurate evaluation function of a game situation through the data of games and the situation feature matrix. An accurate evaluation function is indispensable for a strong computer game program. A game situation is projected into a feature matrix which consists of feature variates charactering the situation. Using variates as input and employ a multi-layer perception as a nonlinear evaluation function. Since it is not easy to obtain accurate evaluated values of situations, the reinforcement adaptive-learning is employed. Experiments using 134 games show that the proposed method works well in obtaining a very accurate evaluation function for Dots-and-Boxes.

The HP model for protein structure prediction abstracts the fact that hydrophobicity is a dominant force in the protein folding process. This challenging combinatorial optimization problem has been widely addressed through metaheuristics. The evaluation function is a key component for the success of metaheuristics; the poor discrimination of the conventional evaluation function of the HP model has motivated the proposal of alternative formulations for this component. This comparative analysis inquires into the effectiveness of seven different evaluation functions for the HP model. The degree of discrimination provided by each of the studied functions, their capability to preserve a rank ordering among potential solutions which is consistent with the original objective of the HP model, as well as their effect on the performance of local search methods are analyzed. The obtained results indicate that studying alternative evaluation schemes for the HP model represents a highly valuable direction which merits more attention.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) botnets outperform the traditional Internet relay chat (IRC) botnets in evading detection and they have become a prevailing type of threat to the Internet *** methods for detecting P2P botnets,such as similarity analysis of network behavior and machine-learning based classification,cannot handle the challenges brought about by different network scenarios and botnet *** noticed that one important but neglected characteristic of P2P bots is that they periodically send requests to update their peer lists or receive commands from botmasters in the command-and-control (C&C) *** this paper,we propose a novel detection model named detection by mining regional periodicity (DMRP),including capturing the event time series,mining the hidden periodicity of host behaviors,and evaluating the mined periodic patterns to identify P2P bot *** our detection model is built based on the basic properties of P2P protocols,it is difficult for P2P bots to avoid being detected as long as P2P protocols are employed in their C&*** hidden periodicity mining,we introduce the so-called regional periodic pattern mining in a time series and present our algorithms to solve the mining *** experimental evaluation on public datasets demonstrates that the algorithms are promising for efficient P2P bot detection in the C&C phase.

This paper deals with the problem of the optimal fault detection (FD) for linear discrete time-varying (LDTV) systems with delayed state and l(2)-norm bounded unknown input. The novelty lies in the designing of an evaluation function for the robust FD. The basic idea is to directly construct an evaluation function by using a weighted l(2)-norm of the measurement output, which achieves an optimal trade-off between the sensitivity to fault and the robustness to l(2)-norm bounded unknown input. To avoid complex computation, a feasible solution is obtained via the recursive computation by applying the orthogonal projection. It is shown that such an evaluation function provides a unified scheme for both the cases of unknown input being l(2)-norm bounded and jointly normal distribution, while a threshold may be chosen based on a priori knowledge of unknown input. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An improved"three steps"mountain-climb searching(MCS)algorithm is proposed which is applied to auto-focusing for microscopic imaging accurately and *** analyzing the performance of several evaluation functions,the variance function and the Brenner function are synthesized as a new evaluation *** the first step,a self-adaptive step length which is much dependent on the reciprocal of the evaluation function value at the beginning position of climbing is used for approaching the halfway up the mountain ***,a fixed moderate step length is applied for approaching the mountaintop of the variance function as closer as ***,afine step is employed for reaching the exact mountaintop of the Brenner *** microscope auto-focusing experiments based on the proposed algorithm for blood smear detection have been carried out *** results show that the improved algorithm can not only guarantee the precision to get clear focal images,but also improve the auto-focusing e±ciency.

When Does “Knowing More is Less” Happen in Real Games

Coevolution in combinatorial games is how players evolve their search strategy and evaluation function according to their opponents. evaluation function is used to measure the performance of non-final states which embodies major characteristics of a player. Using Five-in-a-Row as a platform, we study how player’s winning probability will change after she knows opponent’s evaluation function and thus changes search method and we scrutinize the relations between this change and the performance of evaluation functions. We create 45 evaluation functions to contest with each other and build an index called absolute winning probability based on computer simulation to mark the fitness of evaluation functions. We refine the phenomenon of"knowing more is less" and elaborate when "knowing more is less" and "knowing more is more" will happen in *** find that the superior one will win more after knowing the other and the inferior one is possible to lose more after knowing the other. An empirical transformation formula is given to transform absolute winning probability to evaluation function to explain the phenomenon of "knowing more is less" by theoretical game tree model.

In computer game system, there always include four modules, which are Game show, Move generator, evaluation functions and Search algorithm. In this paper, we study the four modules of Surakarta chess, which is one kind of computer chess game. Since the validity of evaluation function is key to the performance of the entire game system, in this paper, using array to represent the chess board, we mainly study the evaluation function of situation, by integrating five factors in it, which are Chess attack, Attack range, Moving range, cheassboard value and Occupy value, and perform the optimization of all the parameters in the evaluation function. Based on the results of the studies, and by adopting the Alpha-Beta search strategy, we have designed a computer game system of Surakarta chess, which shows the basically feasibility of our evaluation algorithms by winning the third place in the 2012 National Undergraduate Computer Game Competition.
