Remote,rural ethnic-minority communities face greater disaster-related public health risks due to their lack of resources and limited access to health care.The ethnic minority Health Project(EMHP) was initiated in 2009 to work with remote,disaster-prone ethnic-minority villages that live in extreme poverty.One of the project's aims is to develop and evaluate bottom-up health risk reduction efforts in emergency and disaster risk management(HealthEDRM).This article shares project updates and describes field intervention results from the Yi ethnic community of Hongyan village in China's Sichuan Province,an area that experiences recurrent floods.It was found that 64% of the village respondents had never considered any form of disaster preparation,even with the recurrent flood risks.Health intervention participants showed sustained knowledge retention and were nine times more likely to know the correct composition of oral rehydration solution(ORS) after the intervention.Participants also retained the improved knowledge on ORS and disaster preparedness kit ownership12 months after the intervention.

Gaokao has been considered as the gatekeeper of intergenerational class reproduction in today’s slowing social mobility in China.In order to bolster the fairness of Gaokao,the Policy of Bonus Scores for ethnic minority Candidates(PBSEMC)has been issued,whose,however,effectiveness in promoting upward social class has not been adequately empirically explored.The difference-in-differences(DID)analysis based on cross-sectional data,which is distinct from the traditional DID analysis paradigm,was implemented to assess the Reform of PBSEMC in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 1988.The results showed that PBSEMC had a significant and positive impact on the social classes of ethnic minorities,and gender,residence type and occupation type were also relevant to social class,aligning with the previous literature.The PBSEMC is effective in improving the social classes of ethnic minorities.However,the PBSEMC policy should be made more precise,in order to benefit the candidates who are in genuine need of assistance.

During the farming era, people were living under remarkable survival pressure, which was even harder for the ethnic minorities living in the mountainous area of Guizhou Province due to its unique land morphology. In this situation, the ancestors of Buyi ethnic group living in the Biandan Mountain Area gave priority to a reasonable response to the survival pressure when they started their settlement construction. When choosing settlement location, they fully took into account the mountain forms, water resources, and the distribution of the valley plateaus. In addition, they considered the valley plateau as the key element while building the "mountain-water-paddy fi eld-woods-village" settlement organism through the general layout design and construction. After a long-lasting evolution, the settlement space was constantly improved due to population growth, adjustments to nature, responses to wars, and communications with the Han people. As a result, attractive human settlements are fi nally formed in this mountainous area.

The Reports on the Work of the Government present a number of features, such as official authority, annual continuity and focused content, so it can be used as a major textual basis on which to define the key work of ethnic minority rights protection. At the present stage, the key work is to realize economic and cultural rights by insisting on and perfecting the system of regional national autonomy with the aim of realizing the right to development. According to the 13 th Five-Year Plan, it is necessary to protect economic rights in the regional development framework, the cultural rights in national communication and the right to autonomy under the rule of law.

Objectives: To understand sperm motility in adults and its association with lifestyle in an ethnic minority area in Southwest China. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study to assess sperm motility in male adults was conducted at the Reproductive Health Center from January 2018 to May 2019. The data was collected with a questionnaire and semen quality was analyzed with Computer-Aided Sperm Analysis system (CASA). Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to measure the relationship between lifestyle factors and sperm motility. Results: A total of 349 people were recruited. Dietary celery intake was significantly related to the increase of sperm progressive motility and total motility (β = 7.00, 95% CI: 1.59, 12.42 and β = 7.26, 95% CI: 1.45, 13.07, respectively). Cola consumption was associated with increased sperm progressive motility (β = 9.71, 95% CI: 1.46, 17.96). Racial and ethnic minorities in economically deprived inner cities experience high rates of chronic diseases compared to neighborhoods with higher socioeconomic status(SES).However,these economically deprived populations are understudied in terms of biomarkers associated with chronic disease risk which include C-reactive protein(CRP),telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT),and glycosylated hemoglobin(A1C).We examined relationships between CRP and TERT and chronic disease indicators(body mass index[BMI]and A1C)in two lowincome,predominantly African American(AA)neighborhoods in Detroit,Michigan.Sixty-nine adults(43 females,26 males,mean age 46 years[y],standard deviation[SD]=15.9)completed a health survey,anthropometry,and finger stick blood tests.A1C was measured using A1CNow test strips,and CRP and TERT levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)with samples extracted from dried blood spots.We examined CRP(mean=4.9,SD=3.1),TERT(mean=32.5,SD=15.1),and A1C(mean=5.4,SD=1.0)by BMI category.We fitted restricted maximum likelihood regression models to evaluate associations between CRP,TERT,BMI,and A1C,after adjustment for demographics and inclusion of a random effect for the neighborhood.In this predominantly AA sample(91%,63/69),68%had levels of CRP(means=4.8 mg/L,SD=3.0 for AAs;6.4 mg/L,SD=3.9 for all others)indicative of chronic inflammation(CRP greater than 3 mg/L).BMI was significantly associated with CRP(p=0.004)and TERT(p=0.026).TERT levels indicate that being overweight is associated with markers of chromosome remodeling,suggestive of chronic disease.CRP followed a similar trend with overweight individuals having higher inflammation and risk of chronic disease.Our findings warrant further exploration of additional factors that may influence CRP and TERT.Furthermore,examining populations in a more ethnically and/or economically diverse,yet still high proportion minority,sample will fill a knowledge gap in this understudied field.

Liangshan Prefecture in Sichuan province, China, has a high prevalence of HIV infection, which is reflective of a change in the mode of transmission from injection drug use （IDU） to heterosexual intercourse. However, few studies focus on HIV-related heterosexual risk behaviours among the majority Yi population. The objectives of this study were to explore the characteristics of an egocentric sexual network and estimate the prevalence of casual sexual behaviour. Yi villagers （n= 108）, aged 15-35 years, who reported having had sex within the previous year were interviewed as to their sexual behaviours and networks. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions provided supplementary information on sexual norms. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate unadjusted odds ratios （ORs） and 95% confidence intervals （CIs）. Most of the respondents reported having had casual sex at some time in their life, and 66.7% reported multiple sexual partnerships. Only 21.3% reported ever having used a condom. During the study year, a total of 137 partners were involved in 153 sexual partnerships. Among the reported sexual partnerships, 67.3% originated from a casual sexual relationship. For network members in components of size ≥3, 56,9% were involved in concurrent sexual partnerships. Having never been married （OR： 2.11; 95% CI： 1.03-4.33） and younger age （OR： 0.89; 95% CI： 0.83-0.95） were both associated with being in a component of size ≥3. Size （OR： 2.99; 95% Ch 1.17-7.66）, pair （OR： 0.54; 95% Ch 0.039-0.74）, the number of weak components of the egocentric sexual network （OR- 30.04; 95% Ch 6.47-139.46） and gender （OR. 0. 19; 95% Ch. 0.06-0.67） were all associated with being in concurrent sexual partnerships. HIV-related interventions for the Yi ethnic minority in Sichuan province must therefore address concurrent sexual partnerships and promote condom use.

Studies up to now have shown the difference in partner/spouse selection between men and women of ethnic minority groups overseas but lack in-depth exploration of the reasons behind such selection.This study aims to fill the gap by exploring the different types of motivations that drive men and women of ethnic minorities to select their partners/spouses.Using quantitative and qualitative data,we compared partner/spouse selection dynamics and motivations among overseas Chinese men and women.Our study on Chinese people living in Belgium reveal significant gender differences in spouse selection between men and women,with more women likely to go in for intermarriage than men.In our interviews,we found that the underlying motivations for women’s preference for intermarriage lie in their fondness for Western family culture and their desire to make the host country their permanent home.We also found that in their partner-spouse selection,women were less influenced by social norms or pressure from parents and family,which are the main factors driving endogamy.Although the gender ratio in the marriage market is more or less even,cultural factors and possible different adaptation methods of men and women prompt Chinese people to consider or reject their compatriots as suitable partners/spouses.

There is a close relationship between the folk songs and the earth bound society in China,bearing functions of load transfer,expression,dissemination of information,and beauty aspiration,etc.Folk songs are mainly presented through voice and thus possess powerful cultural duplicity,which rightly represents the social poetic quality that both the local residents and the nation-state need to take advantage of.A flexible space of co-existence is thus provided with for both of them.
