Gaining insights into the fluctuation-induced entropic pressure between membranes that mediates cell adhesion and signal transduction is of great significance for understanding numerous physiological processes driven by intercellular *** much effort has been directed toward investigating this entropic pressure,there still exists tremendous controversy regarding its quantitative nature,which is of primary interest in biophysics,since Freund challenged the Helfrich’s well-accepted results on the distance *** this paper,we have investigated the entropic pressure between fluctuating membranes in multilayer systems under pressure and tension through theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo *** find that the scaling relations associated with entropic pressure depend strongly on the magnitude of the external pressures in both bending rigidityand surface tension-dominated *** particular,both theoretical and computational results consistently demonstrate that,in agreement with Helfrich,the entropic pressure p decays with inter-membrane separations c as p^c^(–3)for the tensionless multilayer systems confined by small external ***,our results suggest that the entropic pressure law follows to be p^c^(–1)and p^c^(–3),respectively,in the limit of large and small thermal wavelengths for bending fluctuations of the membranes in a tensionindependent manner for the case of large external pressures.

Influence of homodyne-based feedback control on the entropic uncertainty in open quantum system

For an open quantum system containing two qubits under homodyne-based feedback control, we investigate the dynamical behaviors of quantum-memory-assisted entropic ***, we analyze the influence of feedback modes and coefficients on the entropic *** investigations show that the memory qubit should be placed in a non-dissipative channel if the single dissipative channel condition can be chosen, which helps reduce the entropic uncertainty of the *** the homodyne feedback control F =λσx(or F =λσy), due to different roles of the entangled qubits A and B, when they are subject to feedback control with different feedback coefficients λ, the exchange of feedback coefficients will cause variations of the entropic *** the feedback coefficient corresponding to the memory qubit B is larger(λB >λA), the steady value of the entropic uncertainty will be small, which is conducive to enhancing the robustness of the ***, for the feedback control F =λσz, the difference between the feedback coefficients has no effect on the steady values of the entropic uncertainty.

Relaxation-rate formula for the entropic lattice Boltzmann model

A relaxation-rate formula is presented for the entropic lattice Boltzmann model(ELBM) - a discrete kinetic theory for hydrodynamics. The simple formula not only guarantees the discrete time H-theorem but also gives full consideration to the consistency with hydrodynamics. The relaxation rate calculated with the formula effectively characterizes the drastic changes of the flow fields. By using this formula, the computational cost of the ELBM is significantly reduced and the model now can be efficiently used for a broad range of applications including high Reynolds number flows.

Entanglement Entropy of Reissner–Nordstrm Black Hole and Quantum Isolated Horizon

Based on the work of Ghosh and Pereze, who view the black hole entropy as the logarithm of the number of quantum states on the Quantum Isolated Horizon(QIH)§ the entropy of Reissner–Nordstr¨om black hole is *** to the Unruh temperature, the statistical entropy of quantum fields under the background of Reissner–Nordstr¨om spacetime is calculated by means of quantum statistics. In the calculations we take the integral from the position of QIH to infinity, so the obtained entropy is the entanglement entropy outside the QIH. In Reissner–Nordstr¨om spacetime it is shown that if only the position of QIH is properly chosen the leading term of logarithm of the number of quantum states on the QIH is equal to the leading term of the entanglement entropy outside the black hole horizon, and both are the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy. The results reveal the relation between the entanglement entropy of black hole and the logarithm of the number of quantum states.

Clues to the Fundamental Nature of Gravity, Dark Energy and Dark Matter

This paper integrates the Flat Space Cosmology (FSC) model into the Friedmann equations containing a cosmological term. The Lambda term within this model scales according to 3H2t/c2 and 3/R2t. Use of the Bekenstein-Hawking definition of closed gravitational system total entropy provides for FSC cosmic parameter definitions in terms of . Cosmic time, radius, total matter mass-energy and vacuum energy in this model scale in exactly the same way as . This analysis opens the way for understanding gravity, dark energy and dark matter as being deeply connected with cosmic entropy. The recent theoretical work of Roger Penrose and Erik Verlinde is discussed in this context. The results of this FSC model analysis dovetail nicely with Verlinde’s work suggesting gravity as being fundamentally an emergent property of cosmic entropy. This emergent-property-of-entropy definition of gravity, if true, would also indicate that gravitational inertia, dark matter and dark energy are simply manifestations of cosmic entropy. Thus, they would likely have no identifiable connection to quantum physics, including the standard particle model.

Computational Studies of DNA Separations in Micro-Fabricated Devices: Review of General Approaches and Recent Applications

DNA separation techniques have drawn attention because of their uses in applications such as gene analysis and manipulation. There have been many studies utilizing micro-fabricated devices for faster and more efficient separations than traditional methods using gel electrophoresis. Although many experimental studies have presented various new devices and methods, computational studies have played a pivotal role in this development by identifying separation mechanisms and by finding optimal designs for efficient separation conditions. The simulation of DNA separation methods in micro-fabricated devices requires the correct capture of the dynamics and the structure of a single polymer molecule that is being affected by an applied flow field or an electric field in complex geometries. In this work, we summarize the polymer models (the bead-spring model, the bead-rod model, the slender-body model, and the touching-bead model) and the methods, focusing on Brownian dynamics simulation, used to calculate inhomogeneous fields taking into consideration complex boundaries (the finite element method, the boundary element method, the lattice-Boltzmann method, and the dissipative particle dynamics simulation). The worm-like chain model (adapted from the bead-spring model) combined with the finite element method has been most commonly used but other models have shown more efficient and accurate results. We also review the applications of these simulation approaches in various separation methods and devices: gel electrophoresis, post arrays, capillary electrophoresis, microchannel flows, entropic traps, nanopores, and rotational flows. As more complicated geometries are involved in new devices, more rigorous models (such as incorporating the hydrodynamic interactions of DNA with solid boundaries) that can correctly capture the dynamic behaviors of DNA in such devices are needed.

One Parameter Family of N-Qudit Werner-Popescu States: Bipartite Separability Using Conditional Quantum Relative Tsallis Entropy

The conditional version of sandwiched Tsallis relative entropy (CSTRE) is employed to study the bipartite separability of one parameter family of N-qudit Werner-Popescu states in their 1:N-1 partition. For all N, the strongest limitation on bipartite separability is realized in the limit and is found to match exactly with the separability range obtained using an algebraic method which is both necessary and sufficient. The theoretical superiority of using CSTRE criterion to find the bipartite separability range over the one using Abe-Rajagopal (AR) q-conditional entropy is illustrated by comparing the convergence of the parameter x with respect to q, in the implicit plots of AR q-conditional entropy and CSTRE.

Weighted Gini-Simpson Quadratic Index of Biodiversity for Interdependent Species

The weighted Gini-Simpson quadratic index is the simplest measure of biodiversity which takes into account the relative abundance of species and some weights assigned to the species. These weights could be assigned based on factors such as the phylogenetic distance between species, or their relative conservation values, or even the species richness or vulnerability of the habitats where these species live. In the vast majority of cases where the biodiversity is measured the species are supposed to be independent, which means that the relative proportion of a pair of species is the product of the relative proportions of the component species making up the respective pair. In the first section of the paper, the main versions of the weighted Gini-Simpson index of biodiversity for the pairs and triads of independent species are presented. In the second section of the paper, the weighted Gini-Simpson quadratic index is calculated for the general case when the species are interdependent. In this instance, the weights reflect the conservation values of the species and the distribution pattern variability of the subsets of species in the respective habitat induced by the inter-dependence between species. The third section contains a numerical example.
