Optimization of engine control Strategies for Low Fuel Consumption in Heavy-Duty Commercial Vehicles

The reduction of fuel consumption in engines is always considered of vital importance.Along these lines,in this work,this goal was attained by optimizing the heavy-duty commercial vehicle engine control strategy.More specifically,at first,a general first principles model for heavy-duty commercial vehicles and a transient fuel consumptionmodel for heavy-duty commercial vehicles were developed and the parameters were adjusted to fit the empirical data.The accuracy of the proposed modelwas demonstrated fromthe stage and the final results.Next,the control optimization problem resulting in low fuel consumption in heavy commercial vehicles was described,with minimal fuel usage as the optimization goal and throttle opening as the control variable.Then,a time-continuous engine management approach was assessed.Next,the factors that influence low fuel consumption in heavy-duty commercial vehicles were systematically examined.To reduce the computing complexity,the control strategies related to the time constraints of the engine were parametrized using three different methods.The most effective solution was obtained by applying a global optimization strategy because the constrained optimization problem was nonlinear.Finally,the effectiveness of the low-fuel consumption engine control strategy was demonstrated by comparing the simulated and field test results.

An experimental study of a single-piston free piston linear generator

Free piston linear generator(FPLG)is a promising range extender for the electrical vehicle with unparallel advantages,such as compact structure,higher system efficiency,and reduced maintenance cost.However,due to the lack of the mechanic crankshaft,the related piston motion control is a challenge for the FPLG which causes problems such as misfire and crash and limits its widespread commercialization.Aimed at resolving the problems as misfire,a single-piston FPLG prototype has been designed and manufactured at Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU).In this paper,the development process and experimental validation of the related control strategies were detailed.From the experimental studies,significant misfires were observed at first,while the FPLG operated in natural-aspiration conditions.The root cause of this misfire was then identified as the poor scavenging process,and a compressed air source was leveraged to enhance the related scavenging pressure.Afterward,optimal control parameters,in terms of scavenging pressure,air-fuel equivalence ratio,and ignition position,were then calibrated in this charged-scavenging condition.Eventually,the FPLG prototype has achieved a continuous stable operation of over 1000 cycles with an ignition rate of 100%and a cycle-to-cycle variation of less than 0.8%,produced an indicated power of 2.8 kW with an indicated thermal efficiency of 26%and an electrical power of 2.5 kW with an overall efficiency of 23.2%.

Benefits of model predictive control for gasoline airpath control

One effective possibility to reduce pollutant emissions and fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine is the use of improved process control. It is made viable by the implementation of additional actuators and sensors which allow to operate the process more flexible. For full exploitation of the setup an appropriate control algorithm is necessary. Classical engine control structures rely on the use of many calibration parameters which result in high demands on the calibration time. Model predictive control(MPC)is an advanced control algorithm which is able to overcome this drawback. It allows to use a mathematical plant model for control synthesis which reduces calibration time and makes reusability possible. The present paper introduces the MPC algorithm and discusses the benefits of MPC for engine control. A special emphasis is put on the application for gasoline airpath control. For clarification, the benefits are demonstrated by numerical simulation studies. For the example of gasoline two stage turbocharging, the advantage concerning control performance are shown as well as the possibility to easily adapt to changed specifications for the closed-loop control dynamics.
