Alopecia areata is characterized bysudden loss of hair in patches from normalscalp.It may occur in patients of all ages,particularly in young adults.The etiology isunknown,possibly related to emotional orimmune factors.The onset is sudden,withno subjective symptoms.Several patches ofhair may fall during one night.The baldareas may be round,oval or irregular inshape,and the scalp smooth,with normalhair follicles visible.

AIM To compare the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and early emotional traumas between women with chronic pelvic pain(CPP) and healthy women.METHODS One hundred women in reproductive age,50 of them had CPP(according to the criteria set by the International Association for Study of Pain),and 50 were considered healthy after the gynecological evaluation.The eligibility criteria were defined as follows:chronic or persistent pain perceived in the pelvis-related structures(digestive,urinary,genital,myofascial or neurological systems).Only women in reproductive age with acyclic pain for 6 mo,or more,were included in the present study.Menopause was the exclusion criterion.The participants were grouped according to age,school level and socioeconomic status and were individually assessed through DSM-IV Structured Clinical Interview(SCID-I) and Early Trauma Inventory Self-report-short form(ETISR-SF Brazilian version).Descriptive statistics,group comparison tests and multivariate logistics regression were used in the data analysis.RESULTS The early emotional traumas are highly prevalent,but their prevalence did not differ between the two groups.The current Major Depressive Disorder was more prevalent in women with CPP.The CPP was associatedwith endometriosis in 48% of the women.There was no difference in the prevalence of disorders when endometriosis was taken into account(endometriosis vs other diseases:P > 0.29).The current Major Depressive Disorder and the Bipolar Disorder had greater occurrence likelihood in the group of women with CPP(ODDS = 5.25 and 9.0).CONCLUSION The data reinforce the link between mood disorders and CPP.The preview evidences about the association between CPP and early traumas tended not to be significant after a stronger methodological control was implemented.

An abundance of literature spanning many years depicts the devastating effects of nurse bullying within the profession. The evidence suggests that bullying in general is a deliberate act aimed at another person. Conceptualizing nurse bullying appears to be a key ingredient in creating both awareness and preventative strategies. emotional competence includes a set of behaviors which are unique to each individual. These behaviors according to Goldman (1995) include, but are not limited to emotional self-assessment, accurate self-assurance, self-confidence, emotional self-control, and empathy. The majority of researchers agree that emotionally competent behaviors are impacted by both positive and negative interactions and experiences. Thus, it is hypothesized that emotionally competent behaviors are continually cultivated throughout one’s life based upon lived experiences. This article assesses direct relationships between implementation of emotionally competent behaviors as a means of combatting nurse bullying within the profession. Creating awareness of these two areas can be initial steps in cultivating the needed tools and supportive interventions to assist nurses from novice to expert to professionally mentor and role model for generations to come.

Research has indicated that child maltreatment is associated with an increased likelihood of mental disorders and suicidal ideation and attempts that continues into adulthood. The purpose of this paper is to provide a synopsis of the recent published research from 2006 to 2010 on the association between child maltreatment and Axis I mental disorders and suicidal ideation and attempts. The databases MEDLINE and PsycINFO were searched for relevant and high quality citations up to October 2010. The results indicated that all types of child maltreatment examined are linked to reduced mental health. A general noted trend in the literature is that earlier age of onset of child maltreatment is associated with poorer mental health outcomes. Sex differences do exist with some disorders being more likely among males (e.g., anti-social behaviour) and other more likely among females (e.g., depression, PTSD, substance use disorders) following child maltreatment.

Background: Several psychological factors have been linked to the etiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The aim of the present study was to assess the burden of psychological factors (anxiety, depression, and working status) in the etiology of IBS in Northern Saudi Arabia. Methodology: Data regarding IBS were attained from 930 Saudi volunteers existing in the city of Hail, Northern Saudi Arabia. A purposeful questionnaire was developed and used to obtain the required data. Each questionnaire was completed by a medical student in the course of the interview. Results: IBS symptoms were recognized in 46% of the study population of whom 38% were males and 62% were females. The risk of anxiety as a risk for IBS was statistically significant. The relative risk and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = RR (95% CI) = 1.4801 (1.2608 to 1.7376), P Conclusion: IBS and IBS related symptoms are prevalent in Northern Saudi Arabia. IBS symptoms are significantly associated with anxiety, depression and to a lesser extent may be linked to occupation and daily working hours.
