Impaired implicit emotion regulation in patients with panic disorder:An event-related potential study on affect labeling

People with schizophrenia exhibit impaired social cognitive functions, particularly emotion regulation. Abnormal activations of the ventral medial prefrontal cortex （vMPFC） during emotional tasks have been demonstrated in schizophrenia, suggesting its important role in emotion processing in patients. We used the resting-state functional connectivity approach, setting a functionally relevant region, the vMPFC, as a seed region to examine the intrinsic functional interactions and communication between the vMPFC and other brain regions in schizophrenic patients. We found hypo-connectivity between the vMPFC and the medial frontal cortex, right middle temporal lobe （MTL）, right hippocampus, parahippocampal cortex （PHC） and amygdala. Further, there was a decreased strength of the negative connectivity （or anticorrelation） between the vMPFC and the bilateral dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex （DLPFC） and pre-supplementary motor areas. Among these connectivity alterations, reduced vMPFC-DLPFC connectivity was positively correlated with positive symptoms on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, while vMPFC-right MTL/PHC/amygdala functional connectivity was positively correlated with the performance of emotional regulation in patients. These findings imply that communication and coordination throughout the brain networks are disrupted in schizophrenia. The emotional correlates of vMPFC connectivity suggest a role of the hypo-connectivity between these regions in the neuropathology of abnormal social cognition in chronic schizophrenia.

Effects of parental empathy and emotion regulation on social competence and emotional/behavioral problems of school‐age children

Importance Parents take the lead in parent–child interactions and their emotion regulation ability and empathy during parenting may be associated with children’s emotional/behavioral ***,the specific mechanisms underlying these associations remain *** The present study aimed to explore the effect of parental empathy and emotional regulation on social competence and emotional/behavioral problems in school‐age *** A questionnaire‐based survey was conducted with 274 parents of 8–11‐year‐old children using Achenbach’s Child Behavior Checklist,the emotion regulation Questionnaire,and the Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective *** Children with emotional/behavioral problems(n=37)had relatively lower social competence than children in a matched control group(n=37).Compared with the parents of children in the control group,parents of children with emotional/behavioral problems had significantly lower cognitive empathy scores,mainly manifested by low perspective‐taking and online simulation *** analysis showed that parental cognitive empathy had an indirect effect on children’s emotional/behavioral problems through children’s social *** Parental empathy may have a subtle influence on the social competence of school‐aged children,which further affects the severity of children’s emotional/behavioral problems.

PURPOSE: emotion regulation, especially when adapting various social environments, is one of the most important cognitive functions for human beings. Various strategies can be used to regulate emotions, and successful regulation could be beneficial for both mental and physical health. Here, we focus on exploring the neural networks of the three emotional regulation strategies(reappraisal, distraction and expressive suppression) when experience emotion. METHODS: We measured brain activity of the three emotional regulation strategies in a functional magnetic resonance imaging(f MRI) paradigm of downregulation of emotions. In the reappraisal condition participants should try to change the meaning of the emotional situation to downregulate emotional intensity, while they could directly modify the behavioral or physiology response to an emotional stimulus during the expressive suppression condition. The distraction strategy only need participants to perform an arithmetic task. And all participants should passively view the images in the view condition, no matter how positive or negative the presenting image is. Thirty participants were asked to regulate their emotions according to the demand of each strategy when the picture was presented, and then rate their current emotional experience on a 9-point scale ranging from unpleasant(1) to pleasant(9). RESULTS: Our results first showed a significant main effect in both emotions(positive and negative) and strategies(view, reappraisal, distraction and suppression), along with a significant interaction between them in the behavioral data analysis. Further, we found that all strategies were successful in decreasing the ongoing emotional responses compared with view condition. As one of the important mechanisms that link individual rejection experiences to maladjustment in various domains, rejection sensitivity(RS) is referred to a cognitive-affective disposition to expect, perceive, and/or overreact to the implied or overt rejection cues anxiously or angrily. The present study collected one-year longitudinal data from 590 children’s rejection sensitivity and socio-emotional functioning through multi-source assessment(i.e.,self-reports and peer nominations) to examine the longitudinal relationships between rejection sensitivity and emotional and social difficulties, and explore the moderation effect of emotion regulation. Social problems include peer rejection and peer victimization, and emotional problems include depression, loneliness, social anxiety, and general self-worth. The results indicated that:(1) Boys had significantly higher scores on peer rejection and peer victimization than girls. Children in middle school had significantly higher scores on depression, loneliness, and social anxiety than children in elementary school, and lower scores on general self-worth than children in elementary school.(2) After controlling for the effects of gender and grade, rejection sensitivity at Time 1 significantly predicted higher levels of emotional problems at Time 2, but did not significantly predict peer problems at Time 2;emotion regulation at Time 1 negatively and significantly predicted emotional and peer problems at Time 2.(3) After controlling for the effects of gender, grade, and rejection sensitivity, the relationships between rejection sensitivity and emotional and peer problems were moderated by emotion regulation. The follow-up simple effects analyses indicated that for children with low emotion regulation, rejection sensitivity at Time 1 positively predicted emotional problems at Time 2(β =.21, p emotion regulation, these effects were attenuated. The acceptance of decisional outcomes is important for humans’ wellbeing and social functioning. Considering that deliberate acceptance is resource-costly, unconscious acceptance may be more adaptive during decision-making. Participants were randomly assigned to conscious or unconscious group, while event-related potentials(ERP) and emotional experiences to outcomes were recorded during the Gambling Task. Results showed that acceptance effectively regulated emotional experiences, irrespective of how it was realized(conscious or unconscious). However, the ratio of risky choices in the unconscious group was lower than in the conscious group. And conscious acceptance increased the feedback-related negativity(FRN) amplitude and reduced the P3 amplitude. Conversely, unconscious acceptance not only had no impact on the FRN amplitude, but also increased the P3 amplitude. Furthermore, only in the conscious acceptance group, the P3 amplitude was negatively correlated with the ratio of risky choices, irrespective of outcome valence(gain/loss). These findings showed that conscious acceptance was associated with increased risk-taking, cognitive conflict and resource depletion, the negative effects that were not engendered during unconscious acceptance. This study suggests that unconscious acceptance, as an effortless strategy, may be more adaptive than conscious acceptance for emotion regulation in decision-making contexts.
