Attachment style shapes basic interpersonal orientation and communication patterns act as the vehicle for fostering intimacy and trust in relationship. However, how matching of attachment relates to relationship quality has yielded inconsistent findings. And how communication patterns influences the association draws researchers’ attention. Two studies were conducted toadvance the *** study 1, 313 dyads of dating Chinese emerging adults were recruited to explore the association between matching of attachment(anxiety/avoidance) on their overall relationship *** polynomial regression with response surface, we found that(a) matching in terms of anxiety supported the similarity hypothesis in that partners should have a synchronized desire for closeness,whereas(b) matching in terms of avoidance conformed to the complementary hypothesis in that two partners should be mutually complementary so as to balance the connection with ***,(c) different levels of similarity and different cases of complementarity should also be taken into consideration. The findings depict a complete and nuanced picture of the matching of attachment and its association with relationship *** study 2, 253 dating Chinese emerging adults were recruited to verify the mediating role of communication patterns within. The results showed that, for anxious attachment, PCP(positive communication pattern) carried partial beneficial effects of congruence to relationship quality, both linear and curvilinear. While for avoidant attachment style, PCP mediated partial congruence effects to relationship quality, linear only. The findings highlight the dyadic perspective on couple’s attachment and relational outcomes, as well as the mediating role of communication wherein.
