Hydrogels have various potential applications due to their unique characteristics and recently,hydrogels have been utilized as adsorbents in wastewater treatment because of their ability to remove contaminants from *** strong hydrogels with high adsorption capabilities is crucial for effective wastewater *** and researchers are working to improve the properties of hydrogels by incorporating inorganic elements into polymer networks,which further reduces the costs as well as simplifies their *** polymers like starch and alginate are widespread due to their economic and biological advantages,such as biodegradability,biocompatibility,reduced toxicity,environmental friendliness,and low *** adsorption of pollutants onto hydrogels as well as their use as antimicrobial agents has garnered significant *** review paper summarizes the latest studies on using hydrogels as adsorbents to remove endocrine-disrupting chemicals(EDCs),persistent organic pollutants(POPs),and other emerging pollutants from water environments along with their use as antimicrobial *** the first step,different classes of hydrogels and different characterization techniques have been *** antimicrobial potential of hydrogels is elaborated to understand how these hydrogels can be a potential candidate for such *** discussing the adsorption application of hydrogels,different isothermal,kinetics and thermodynamics models have been discussed to highlight the mechanism and nature of forces involved in adsorption of *** different simulations such as DFT and MD have been discussed to get more holistic understanding of pollutants adsorption onto hydrogels.A limited number of studies have utilized other techniques such as Monte Carlo simulations and computational fluid dynamics(CFD)so it is important to explore a variety of computational methods to gain a comprehensive understanding of the adsorption process o

Ecotoxicological effects of polycyclic musks and cadmium on seed germination and seedling growth of wheat(Triticum aestivum)

Single and joint toxic effects of polycyclic musks including 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta[g]-2- benzopyran （HHCB） and 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronapthalene （AHTN） and cadmium （Cd） on seed germination and seedling growth of wheat （Triticum aestivum） were investigated. The results showed that the toxicity sequence of HHCB toxic to wheat seed germination and seedling growth was similar to that of AHTN, that is, germination rate 〉 shoot elongation 〉 root elongation, while the toxicity of Cd was in the sequence of root elongation 〉 shoot elongation 〉 germination rate, according to the LC50 and EC50 values. It is suggested that polycyclic musks and Cd had different toxicological mechanisms. Root and shoot elongation of wheat might be good bioindicators for the contamination of polycyclic musks and Cd in soil. The mixture of polycyclic musks and Cd had synergistic effects on T. aestivum according to the equi-toxic mixture approach when root elongation was selected as the toxicological endpoint. Thus, the joint toxicity of HHCB and Cd was significantly higher than the single toxicity of HHCB or Cd, which was also confirmed by the EC50mix value of the mixture （EC50mix = 0.530 TUrnix）. The EC50mix value of the mixture of AHTN and Cd was 0.614 TUmix, which indicated that the mixture toxicity was strengthened when AHTN coexisted with Cd.

Trichoderma viride F7 improves peanut performances while remediating cadmium-contaminated soil with microplastics

Microplastics(MPs)and cadmium(Cd)in soil have serious negative impacts on plant *** a bioremediator,Trichoderma viride may modulate the impacts of MPs and/or Cd on plant growth and heavy metal *** this study,*** F7 was used to treat Cd-contaminated soil with and without the presence of polylactic acid MPs to investigate its effects on peanut growth,Cd uptake efficiency,and soil *** showed that F7 increased soil pH,dissolved organic carbon,cation exchange capacity,microbial biomass nitrogen,and microbial biomass carbon,which resulted in increases of 2.10%-19.83%in peanut biomass and mitigated the negative effects of MPs and Cd on peanut *** viride F7 reduced the soil bioavailable Cd and plant Cd concentrations by 16.68%-34.20%and 5.37%-25.84%,*** path analysis showed that F7 could improve peanut performances by altering soil properties and reducing peanut Cd concentrations in MP-Cd-contaminated *** fungal community analysis indicated that the microbial community was altered via F7 inoculation,which antagonized Fusarium and promoted peanut *** study reveals the mechanisms of F7 in mitigating Cd contamination in the soil with the presence of MPs,which provides new ideas for managing MP-heavy metal-contaminated soil and improving soil health.

Graphite-derived carbon-based nanomaterials(GCNMs)as an exciting class of engineering carbonmaterials have been extensively exploited in environment and agriculture for pollution restorer,environmental purifier,plant growth stimulant,and stress resistance *** the increasing demand of production in past decades,GCNMs were inevitably released into the natural environment and became emerging *** review briefly summarized the recent progress on GCNMs-plant interaction with positive and negative sides,and discussed the biphasic(stimulatory-inhibitory)regulation of GCNMs on plant *** emphasis was placed on disseminating the latest scientific research,covering various effectiveness of GCNMs on plants and cells as well as ***,it is highlighted that fullerenes,carbon nanotubes,graphenes,and their functionalized forms as the representative zero-,one-,and two-dimensional GCNMs in optimum quantity have favorable efficacy on plants for seed germination,growth and development,fruit and productivity,and stress *** the contrary,GCNMs have possibly induced cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity on plant at anatomic,physiological,and genetic *** toxic mechanisms were mainly attributed to ion leakage from membrane,chloroplast damage,decreasing the levels of photosynthetic/nonphotosynthetic pigments and plant hormones,downregulating activities of metabolism and enzymatic/non-enzymatic antioxidant systems,or triggering ROS increase for inducing oxidative *** comprehensive review provides an in-depth insight of advanced progress made toward the utilization of GCNMs in plant science fields as well as current *** perspectives on a directional guide for further research in the emerging area of GCNMs-enabled phytonanotechnology are summarized at the *** will possibly provide an important reference role for further study and rational application of GCNMs in agriculture.

Seasonal occurrence of microplastics in sediment of two South African recreational reservoirs

Inland water systems are regarded as a pathway and sink of plastic pollutants from the terrestrial *** ecosystems are globally contaminated with microplastics,but the spatiotemporal occurrence and density of microplastics in freshwater ecosystems remain poorly *** present study seasonally assessed differences in microplastic density in the sediments from two South African recreational reservoirs associated with low human activities(macadamia orchards)and high human activities(communal areas).Microplastics were recovered from all of the reservoirs assessed,indicating their extensive occurrence and *** numbers were significantly higher in reservoirs associated with high anthropogenic activities during the hot-dry season(140.6 particles kg^(-1)dwt)and lower in reservoirs associated with low anthropogenic activities during the hot-wet and cool-dry seasons,i.e.,22.60 particles kg^(-1)dwt and 16.13 particles kg^(-1)dwt,***,polypropylene(31%)and polystyrene(30%)were identified as the dominant types of microplastic polymer in both reservoir ***,no correlative relationships were observed for environmental parameters and microplastic densities across reservoirs and seasons,suggesting a widespread and largely context-independent pollution *** results show that microplastics are not evenly distributed between waters associated with low human activities and high human *** work should seek greater sample sizes and centre around observing microplastic contamination in the region by examining their sources,transport,and impacts to freshwater environments,whilst informing management strategies.
