A Preliminary Study on Evaluation of electro-Acupunctural Effect by Using Cortical Infrared Thermography

Objective: To explore the possibility of using cortical infrared thermography (CIT) and temperature in studying the principle of acupuncture and moxibustion. Methods: The changes of the cerebral cortical temperature during electro-acupuncture (EA) measured by CIT in twenty cats were observed. By opening the skull before experiments, the cortex of animals was revealed. The distribution of the conical temperature of the awakened animals was studied by AGA infrared thermovision, and the thermograms were analysed by computer. Results: (1) The thermograms of the profile of the cortex could be displayed clearly, the temperature was higher in the ante and lower in post-cortex than that in other regions. (2) No tendency of conical temperature ascending within 30 minutes in cats without EA. (3 ) After EA, the temperature of cortex generally increased by 0.3 to 1.7 degrees centigrade, and 5 min after EA, the increment of temperature was the highest, 10 min after EA, the temperature increment was higher than before EA, but lower than 5 min after EA. The conical temperature recovered 10 min after stopping the stimulation. (4) The temperature increment was more obvious in the regions of ant. ectosylvian, ant. supra-Sylvian and ant. Sylvian than that in other regions. No matter where the site of EA was, every group had its own special region of higher temperature increment. Conclusion: The temperature increased in the cortex were mainly in the somatosensory regions. The extent and position of temperature response of cortex after EA could be displayed with CIT directly by picture. The display of the temperature response could be taken as the indication of the nervous activity. CIT could be used to conduct the studies of the acupuncture and the brain.

Objective：To investigate the mechanism of the reversal effect of acupuncture on the fall of blood pressure induced by angiotensin （1-7）[Ang-（1 7）] in the caudal ventrolateral medulla （CVLM） of rats. Methods： Ang-（1-7） and its selective receptor antagonist （DAla7）, Ang（1-7） and Ang（779） were microinjected into the CVLM respectively to induce the change of blood pressure, during which, the concentrations of amino acid neurotransmitters were detected by means of microdialysis and high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC）combined with fluorescent detector, on the other hand, the effects of electro-acupuncture （EA） on the level of blood pressure and the concentrations of amino acid neurotransmitters were also observed. Results： Unilateral microinjection of Ang（1 7） into the CVLM could decrease the blood pressure （BP）, which was accompanied by an increase in the release of Glu and a decrease in the release of Tau in the same site; Whereas microinjection of Ang-779 into the CVLM could elevate BP, which was accompanied by a decrease in the release of Glu and an increase in the release of Tau; EA at acupoint Zusanli （ST 36） for 20 min could inhibit the fall of blood pressure induced by microinjection of Ang-（1-7） into the CVLM and the elevation of blood pressure induced by microinjection of Ang-779 into the CVLM, and in the meantime, it could inhibit the changes of the release of Glu and Tau induced by microinjection of Ang-（1-7） and Ang-779 into the CVLM. Conclusion： The reversal effect of EA on the fall or elevation of blood pressure induced by microinjection of Ang-（1-7） or Ang-779 into the CVLM might be related to the changes of Glu and Tau release.

It has been extensively proved that electro-acupuncture elicit analgesia in bothextensive areas and local region via supraspinal structures and spinal *** present investigationwas to study the role of P1-purinergic receptors in the spinal mechanisms of weak electroacupuncture-induced *** withdrawal latency（LWL）to noxious radiant heat focused on the ankle regionwas used to assess the effects of acupuncture and that of P1-purinergic（adenosine）receptor antago-nists,theophylline and caffeine on the electro-acupuncture（EA）*** prolonged the LWLby 16.7%±20.3%,with an after-effect lasting about 15 *** theophylline and caffeineblocked the EA-induced prolongation of LWL in a dose-dependent manner at the doses of 1.6-16 mg/*** results suggest that P1-purinegic receptor is involved in the spinal mechanisms of weak EAproduced analgesia in the rat.

Objective To observe the effect of stimulating Yinttang （印堂 EX-HN 3） and Baihui（百会 GV 20） with electroacupuncture （EA） on blood oxygenation level of brain and explore the feasibility of measuring the therapeutic effect of acupuncture by applying near infra red spectrum （NIRS）. Methods Ten participants semi-randomly selected from 158 adults （random test sequence） were stimulated with EA at the acupoints of EX-HN 3 and GV 20. Verbal fluency task was conducted before and after acupuncture, and changes in blood oxygenation level of cerebral cortex were tested by applying NIRS. Quantitative data were processed with JMP 10.0.2 software, and changes in waveforms of blood oxygenation level of brain before and after treatment were compared by applying NIRS. Results ① The mean of reacting dose （integral value） of blood oxygenation level of cerebral cortex of the 158 adults in the verbal fluency task was 10.6 ± 1.1, and the mean of the whole reacting dose of blood oxygenation level of cerebral cortex at 1/2 period of time during the test （centroids value） was 46.8 ± 1.6. ② In the EA group, the mean of integral value and centroids value of 10 adults were 8.4 ± 5.1 and 54.7± 12.2 before EA while 9.8±3.5 and 41.2±6.7 after EA. The integral value and centroids value of the EA group were closer to the mean of all the subjects. Conclusion It was found by NIRS that the blood oxygenation level of cerebral cortex could be regulated in bi- directional way by stimulating EX-HN 3 and GV 20 with EA, and a further research on whether it directly related to EA is to be made.

Objective:To explore the clinical efficacy of collateral-pricking and blood-letting cupping combined with surrounding needling technique electroacupuncture in the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia(PHN).Methods:Seventy-two patients with post-herpetic neuralgia were randomized into observation group and control *** the 72 cases,12 cases fell off,so finally 30 cases in each *** observation group was treated with collateral-pricking and blood-letting cupping combined with surrounding needling technique electroacupuncture,while the control group was treated simply with pregabalin capsules for 20 consecutive *** the basis of the western medication pregabalin capsules,the same as that of the control group,collateral-pricking and blood-letting cupping combined with electroacupuncture in a surrounding needling technique,was adopted for the observation group,once every two days,ten days as one course of treatment,a total of two *** immediate visual analogue scale(VAS)before and after treatment were observed in the two groups,and their clinical effects were ***:The VAS scores of PHN patients in the two groups after treatment were lower than those before treatment(both Pelectroacupuncture is relatively satisfactory in the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia.

Study on Combined Acupunture with General Anesthesia in Pneumonectomy

Combined electro-acupuncture with general anesthesia in pneumonectomy was stodied here .The result showed that general anesthesia complemented with electro-acupuncture at the points of Hegu (LI4 ) and Sanyangluo (SJ8) enabled us to have reduced amount of fentanyl 38￣ 85 g/h compared with generalanesttiesia alone in each case. There were no statistical differences in blood pressure and heart rate duringthe operation in every group, all of the arterial oxygen saturation (SPO2) were in normal range. It was con-sidered that electro-acupuncture in combination with general anesthesia could reduce the use of dosage ofanesthetics and the inhibition of physiological functions. It is a practical anesthetic method acceptible to thethoracic surgeon and patients.

The regulation of acupuncture on the immunological function has been studied inlaboratory and clinic. The results showed that stimulating the biological active point (or acupoint)with electroacupuncture could inhibit the growth of tumor in experimental rats and prolongate the life-span of rats bearing tumor; and that electro-acupuncture had a good effect on the immunoregulatingsubpopulations of lymphocyte of patients with cancer.
