egg rejection behavior does not explain the lack of cowbird parasitism on an eastern North American population of Red-winged Blackbirds

Background:Red-winged Blackbirds(Agelaius phoeniceus),hereafter red-wings,are much less frequently parasitized by Brown-headed Cowbirds(Molothrus ater)in eastern North America than in central North America and had not been recorded as hosts in our study area in southeastern *** hosts of Old World cuckoos(Cuculidae)often show geographic variation in egg rejection behavior,cowbird hosts typically exhibit uniform responses of all acceptance or all rejection of cowbird ***,geographic variation in cowbird parasitism frequencies might reflect a different behavioral response to parasitism by hosts where only some populations reject *** this study,we tested whether egg rejection behavior may explain the lack of parasitism observed in our eastern red-wing population,which may provide insight into low parasitism levels across eastern North ***:We parasitized red-wing nests with model cowbird eggs to determine their response to *** were tested across three nest stages and compared to control nests with no *** rejection differed significantly by stage,we compared responses separately for each nest *** also monitored other songbird nests to identify parasitism frequencies on all potential ***:Red-wings showed significantly more rejections during the building stage,but not for the laying and incubation *** during nest building involved mostly egg burials,which likely represent a continuation of the nest building process rather than true rejection of the cowbird *** these responses,red-wings rejected 15%of cowbird eggs,which is similar to rejection levels from other studies and *** overall parasitism frequency on 11 species surveyed in our study area was only 7.4%.Conclusions:egg rejection behavior does not explain the lack of parasitism on red-wings in our eastern ***,we suggest that cowbird preference for other hosts and the low abu

Recognition and rejection of foreign eggs are effective defense of hosts against brood ***,brood parasitism can impose various selection pressures on different geographic populations of the same host *** a multiple cuckoo system in China,Azure-winged Magpies(Cyanopica cyanus)are parasitized by both Indian Cuckoos(Cuculus micropterus)and Asian Koels(Eudynamys scolopaceus).In this study,egg recognition ability and recognition mechanism of the Azure-winged Magpie were investigated using a population in Fusong,southeastern Jilin,*** results showed that 55.6%(20/36)of the Azure-winged Magpies correctly rejected quail(Coturnix japonica)eggs in their nests,while 13.9%(5/36)of the individuals experienced rejection costs by wrongly rejecting their own ***-winged Magpies could accurately reject the experimental eggs when the number of such eggs in the nests was the same as that of the magpie ***,Azure-winged Magpies do not recognize and reject conspecific eggs(0/28).The present study indicates that the Azure-winged Magpie has moderate egg recognition ability toward non-mimetic quail eggs and shows a true recognition mechanism with rejecting foreign eggs by accurately recognizing their own ***,they cannot recognize conspecific eggs.

Background:Nest parasitism by cuckoos(Cuculus spp.)results in enormous reproductive failure and forces hosts to evolve antiparasitic strategies,i.e.,recognition of own eggs and rejection of cuckoo *** are often sexual conflicts between male and female individuals in the expression of antiparasitic behavior due to the differences in reproductive inputs and division of ***:By adding a foreign egg made of blue soft clay to the host nest during early incubation period in the field,and by removing several host eggs and adding experimental eggs to control the proportion of two egg types in the nest,we examined egg rejection ability,egg recognition mechanism and sexual difference in egg rejection of the Oriental Reed Warbler(Acrocephalus orientalis),one of the major hosts of Common Cuckoos(Cuculus canorus).Results:Our results indicated that Oriental Reed Warblers can recognize and reject nearly 100%(73/75)of the nonmimetic eggs made of blue soft clay,and they could reject foreign eggs with 100%accuracy,regardless of the ratio of experimental eggs and its own eggs in the ***,all cases of egg rejections recorded by videos were only carried out by ***:Oriental Reed Warblers have a high egg recognition ability and show a true recognition *** female warblers perform egg rejection,suggesting that the sex for host egg incubation seems to play an important role in the evolution of egg recognition mechanisms.

egg-spot matching in common cuckoo parasitism of the oriental reed warbler: effects of host nest availability and egg rejection

Background: The success of cuckoo parasitism is thought to depend largely on the extent of egg matching between cuckoo and host eggs, since poor-matching cuckoo egg would lead to more frequent egg rejection by the host. In this study, we investigated how egg-spot matching between the Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus) and its host, the Oriental Reed Warbler(Acrocephalus orientalis) is affected by the local parasitism rate, nest availability in breeding synchronization and egg ***: We used the paired design of parasitized and their nearest non-parasitized nests where breeding occurred simultaneously to compare egg-spot matching. The image analysis was used to compare four eggshell pattern variables, namely spot size, density, coverage on the different areas of egg surface, and the distribution on the whole egg surface. egg recognition experiments were conducted to test the effect of egg spots on egg rejection by the ***: Our results show that much better matching in almost all spot parameters tested on the side of the egg and the spot distribution on the whole egg occurred in parasitized nests than in non-parasitized nests. Matching of spot density between cuckoo and host eggs in parasitized nests increased with the synchronization between temporal availability of nests and the egg-laying period of female cuckoos. egg recognition experiments in which the warbler eggs were deliberately painted with extra spots led to a significantly higher egg rejection rate(78.3%) than of unpainted ***: Our data suggest that both the high temporal encounter rate between cuckoo and warbler nests as well as the high egg rejection ability of the host are important factors for egg-spot matching of the cuckoos.

Background:Thrush species are rarely parasitized by cuckoos,but many have a strong egg recognition *** date,there is a limited understanding of the relationship between host egg rejection and cuckoo parasitism ***:By using egg experiments in the field,we compared egg rejection between two non‑parasitized potential host species and two parasitized hosts of cuckoos in the same ***:The White‑bellied Redstart(Luscinia phoenicuroides),a host of the Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus),rejected 66.6%of blue model eggs;the Elliot’s Laughingthrush(Trochalopteron elliotii),a host of the Large Hawk Cuckoo(Hierococcyx sparverioides),rejected 25%of blue model eggs and 46.1%of white model eggs;and the Chestnut Thrush(Turdus rubrocanus)and the Chinese Thrush(***),in which cuckoo parasitism has not been recorded,rejected 41.1 and 83.3%of blue model eggs,*** were no significant differences in the egg rejection among them,although the Chinese Thrush showed the highest rate of egg ***:This study indicates that the egg recognition ability of cuckoo hosts has no correlation with the actual parasitism rate of *** suggest that the egg recognition ability of the two potential host species may have been retained from a parasitic history with the cuckoo,while the two common host species have developed their egg rejection abilities due to current parasitism *** addition,our study highlights the importance of the multicuckoo parasite system for better understanding the selection pressure of parasitism on the evolution of host egg recognition abilities.

Light matters:Nest illumination alters egg rejection behavior in a cavity-nesting bird

egg discrimination by cavity-nesting birds that build nests under dim light conditions was presumed to depend on nest luminance,although this hypothesis has rarely been *** of egg discrimination ability by cavity-nesting tits under dim light conditions may reveal the selection pressure from brood parasitism that they encounter under natural *** manipulated the intensity of luminance of nests of the Green-backed Tit(Parus monticolus),a potential cuckoo host that possesses a strong discrimination ability of non-mimetic foreign *** performed experiments to test their egg discrimination ability under different light *** results showed that Green-backed Tits discriminate against non-mimetic foreign eggs under normal light conditions in nest boxes,and this ability persisted at nest luminance as low as 4.78±1.31 lux that is several times lower than normal luminance(38.11±24.02 lux).However,egg discrimination by Green-backed Tits disappeared when nest luminance was reduced to a minimum of 0.35±0.15 *** latter value represents total darkness for *** present study shows that nest luminance plays a key role in egg discrimination by Green-backed Tits that build nests under dim light *** study provides strong experimental evidence for nest illumination altering egg rejection behavior in cavity-nesting birds.

Seasonal increase in nest defense,but not egg rejection,in a cuckoo host

The interactions between avian brood parasites and their hosts provide an informative and easy-to-handle system for studying *** brood parasitism reduces the reproductive success of hosts,and thus,hosts have evolved anti-parasitic strategies,such as rejecting parasitic eggs and adopting aggressive nest defense strategies,to avoid the cost brought on by brood *** test whether host anti-parasitic strategies are adjusted with the risk of being parasitized when the breeding seasons of brood parasites and hosts are not synchronous,we conducted a field experiment assessing nest defense and egg recognition behaviors of the Isabelline Shrike(Lanius isabellinus),a host of the Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus).In the local area,the host Isabelline Shrike begins to breed in April,whereas the summer migratory Common Cuckoo migrates to the local area in May and begins to lay parasitic *** showed that nest defense behaviors of the Isabelline Shrike increases significantly after cuckoo arrival,showing higher aggressiveness to cuckoo dummies,with no significant difference in attack rates among cuckoo,sparrowhawk and dove dummies,but their egg rejection did not change *** results imply that Isabelline Shrikes may adjust their nest defense behavior,but not egg rejection behavior,with seasonality.

Nest sanitation behavior does not increase the likelihood of parasitic egg rejection in herring gulls

Birds’behavioral response to brood parasitism can be influenced not only by evolution but also by context and individual *** could include nest sanitation,in which birds remove debris from their ***,nest sanitation behavior might be an evolutionary precursor to the rejection of parasitic ***,the context or experience of performing nest sanitation behavior might increase the detection or prime the removal of parasitic eggs,but evidence to date is *** tested incubation-stage nests of herring gulls Larus argentatus to ask whether nest sanitation increased parasitic egg *** an initial set of 160 single-object experiments,small,red,blocky objects were usually rejected(18 of 20 nests),whereas life-sized,3D-printed herring gull eggs were not rejected whether red(0 of 20)or the olive-tan base color of herring gull eggs(0 of 20).Next,we simultaneously presented a red,3D-printed gull egg and a small,red *** nests exhibited frequent nest sanitation(small,red block removed at 40 of 48 nests),but egg rejection remained uncommon(5 of those 40)and not significantly different from control nests(5 of 49)which received the parasitic egg but not the priming ***,performance of nest sanitation did not shape individuals’responses to ***,parents were more likely to reject the parasitic egg when they were present as we approached the nest to add the experimental *** on the underlying mechanism,this could also be a case of experience creating variation in responses to parasitism.

Mutual interaction between brood parasites and their hosts is a well-known model system for studying host-parasite *** parties have acted reciprocally,resembling an evolutionary arms race,in which adaptations and counter-adaptations have evolved as a result of host-parasite dynamics,such as the classical cuckoo-host *** among parasite and cuckoo eggs and rejection of foreign eggs is regarded as an important anti-parasitism *** Chinese babax(Babax lanceolatus)is a large hawk-cuckoo(Hierococcyx sparverioides)host distributed in southwest China.A previous study shows that the babax is an intermediate egg rejector,and most cuckoo eggs are accepted by the Chinese babax,although a small proportion of hosts reject cuckoo ***,the large hawk-cuckoo lays non-mimetic eggs in contrast to the uniform blue eggs of *** egg coloration is a critical cue used by host species in favor of the recognition of parasitic eggs by hosts,we used a spectrometer to quantify egg color variation to understand the differentiation in discrimination ability between the egg rejectors and *** found that the chroma of intra-clutch variation of babax eggs was more consistent in egg rejectors than in ***,no statistical significance was found in inter-clutch variation between these two types of *** results suggest that hosts lay eggs with a low level of intra-clutch variation without the necessity of a high level of inter-clutch variation simultaneously as predicted by the egg signature *** study may further indicate that selection pressures from evolutionarily recent parasites can drive individual-based differences in an anti-parasitism strategy.

Most studies exploring abilities of hosts to detect brood parasitism are based on detecting colour and/or pattern differences among parasitic and host eggs or nestlings,while only few were focused on size *** recognition and recognition by discordancy are used to explain cognitive mechanisms of host egg recognition;however,only a few studies have found that hosts use recognition by *** study investigated:1)whether egg and nestling recognitions in the Crested Myna(Acridotheres cristatellus) are based on size cues;2)whether the egg cognitive mechanism is recognition by discordancy based on size cues;and 3) whether the longer the experiment time,the higher the egg recognition *** results showed that the Crested Myna uses egg or nestling size as a recognition cue while the egg and nestling colour and patterning are not associated with egg or nestling rejection,thus the cognitive mechanism of egg recognition in the Crested Myna is recognition by discordancy based on egg size ***,there is a rejection delay in time of egg rejection behaviour of the Crested ***,we suggest that the periodicity of egg rejection experiments could be appropriately extended,especially for species with relatively low egg recognition ability.
