Effects of an ectomycorrhizal fungus on the growth and physiology of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica seedlings subjected to saline-alkali stress

This research investigates the mechanism of increased salinity tolerance of ectomycorrhizal fungiinoculated P. sylvestris var. mongolica to provide a theoretical basis for the application of the fungus in saline *** effects due to inoculation of seedlings with Suillus luteus(a symbiotic ectomycorrhizal fungus), were determined in four kinds of saline–alkali soils. Growth and physiological indicators, including photosynthetic characteristics, plant height, biomass, photosynthetic pigments,catalase(CAT) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) enzyme levels, and malondialdehyde(MDA), an organic marker for oxidative stress, and soluble protein levels were determined. Mycorrhizal colonization rate decreased with increasing saline–alkalinity and growth of inoculated seedlings was significantly enhanced. Biomass and chlorophyll contents also increased significantly. SOD and CAT activities were higher than in non-inoculated seedlings. However, MDA content decreased in inoculatedseedlings. Soluble protein content did not increase significantly. Inoculation with a symbiotic ectomycorrhizal fungus could enhance the saline–alkali tolerance of P. sylvestris var. mongolica. Growth and physiological performance of inoculated seedlings were significantly better than that of uninoculated seedlings. The results indicate that inoculated P. sylvestris var. mongolica seedlings may be useful in the improvement of saline–alkali lands.

Influence of ectomycorrhizal inoculation on Pinus wallichiana and Cedrus deodara seedlings under nursery conditions

A study was undertaken to examine the extent of root colonization by four locally isolated ectomycorrhizal （ECM） fungi （Hebeloma theobrominum, Boletus dryophilus, Scleroderma citrinum and Suillus luteus） and their effects on seedling growth in Pinus wallichiana and Cedrus deodara under nursery conditions. Seedlings of the two conifers were inoculated with mycelium of ECM fungi and were grown in pots containing sterilized forest soil for six months. The percentage of ECM colonization of roots was 38%-52% in Pinus wallichiana and 33%-48~ in Cedrus deodara. ECM colonization increased shoot height, needle number, shoot and root biomass and survival of inoculated seedlings. Among the four ECM fungi Hebeloma theobrominum was more effective with Pinus wallichiana and Scleroderma citrinum with Cedrus deodara in promoting seedling survival and overall growth. All the four ECM fungi used enhanced growth of inoculated seedlings and thus can be used in afforestation and regeneration programmes in degraded forests ecosystems.

Ability of ectomycorrhizal Fungns Laccaria bicolor S238Nto Increase the Growth of Donglas Fir Seedlings andTheir Phosphorns and Potassinm Uptake

ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria bicolor S238N, isolated from a forest soil in central France in 1990s,has demonstrated unequivocally an ability to promote pine growth. In the present nursery bed experiment,the ability of this ectomycorrhizal fungus to increase growth and P and K uptake of Douglas Fir seedlings（Zone 22） was examined. Growth of inoculated seedlings was over twice （plant height） and three times（biomass） that of non-inoculated ones. Similarly, both the concentrations and the amounts of P and Kuptake by seedlings were significantly increased by fungal inoculation, indicating the improvement of P and Knutrition in mycorrhizal seedlings. In contrast, Al-p in the soils was decreased obviously by plants, especiallyby mycorrhizas, suggesting utilization of this soil P pool by plants and more efficient Al-P mobilization bymycorrhizas than by nonmycorrhizas. Moreover, K extracted by 1 mol/L HCl following consecutive extractionof H2O and CH3COONH4, which may not be plant available, could be utilized by fungus colonized *** could be explained by the release of protons and oxalate by hypae which leads to replacement of interlayerK in nonexpanded 2:1 clay minerals and bio-weathering of phyllosilicates.

91 noteworthy ectomycorrhizal fungi associated with Larix sibirica Ledeb. etc. from Xing jiang are discussed. Hydnellum caeruleum(Horn. :Pers. )Karst. ,H. peckii Banker apud Peck,Cortinarius azureovelatus Orton,C. pinicola Orton, C. rickenianus Maire are new record to China. Among which 66 species are edible, 14 species are poisonous, 13 species are pharmaceutical, 22 species are probably anticancer.

Soil fungal and prokaryotic community structure exhibits differential short-term responses to timber harvest in the Pacific Northwest

Conventional clear-cut timber harvest is a widespread industrial practice across the Pacific Northwest;however,information regarding how these practices impact soil microbial community structure at the regional scale is *** evidence of consistent and substantial impact of harvest on soil microbial functional profiles across the region(despite a range of environmental conditions),the objective of this study was to determine the extent to which harvest also influences the structure of prokaryotic and fungal soil microbial communities,and how generalized these trends are throughout the geographic *** soil samples were collected one year before and after harvest across nine second-growth Douglas-fir forests in the Pacific *** community DNA was extracted from the soils,and high-throughput targeted gene sequencing of the 16 S r RNA gene for prokaryotes and the internal transcribed spacer(ITS)gene for fungi was *** diversity was consistently and significantly higher after harvest;it was moderately so for fungal communities(+14.6%),but only marginally so for prokaryotic communities(+2.0%).Similarly,on average,a greater proportion of the variation in the community structure of fungi(20.1%)at each site was associated with forest harvest compared to that of prokaryotes(13.2%).Overall,the greatest influence of timber harvest on soil microbial communities appeared to be a relative depletion of ectomycorrhizal fungi,with a concomitant enrichment of saprotrophic *** the short-term responses of soil microbial communities across the region,particularly those of tree root-associated symbionts,may aid our understanding of the role soil microbial communities play in ecological succession.
