Distribution and storage of soil organic and inorganic carbon under different ecological zones in Xinjiang,China

The objective of this study was to quantify both soil organic carbon(SOC)and soil inorganic carbon(SIC)stocks in different ecological zones in Xinjiang Region,the largest arid and semi-arid region in northwest *** specific focus was on the vertical distributions of 641 typical soil profiles(0-100 cm).The study region covered five ecological zones:I-Altai/west Junggar;II-Junggar basin;III-Tianshan mountain;IV-Tarim basin;and V-Kunlun-Altun *** zones are categorized by their specific geographical locations from north to south with terrains derived from mountains to *** data used in the study were obtained from the first(1960s)and the second(1980s)National Soil Surveys and partially from the field survey of this study conducted in *** results suggest that there are 11.74 Pg SOC and 26.71 Pg SIC total stocks in the 0-100 cm surface soil over the entire study *** distributions of SOC and SIC were found to be *** Tianshan mountain zone has the highest SOC stock,followed by the Tarim basin,Kunlun-Altun mountains,Altai and west Junggar(Altai/west Junggar),and Junggar basin *** contrast,the Tarim basin zone had the highest SIC stock,followed by the Tianshan mountain,Kunlun-Altun mountains,Junggar basin,and Altai/west Junggar *** SOC content decreases gradually from northwest to southeast and from mountains to deserts;while the SIC content decreases gradually from south to *** SOC and SIC contents also change with soil *** a given ecological zone,the SOC content increased with increasing soil depth,peaked at about 20-40 cm,then it decreased with the bigger depths below 40 *** SIC contents increased gradually from 0 to 40 cm,and then decreased gradually with increasing soil depth over the 40-100 cm depth in all ecological zones except for the Tianshan mountain area.

Since the last assessment of ecological zones of Sudan conducted in 1958 by Harrison and Jackson, the vegetation types, cover, and its distribution have undergone remarkable changes;this change occurs in most of the predominant ecological zones, particularly those which are currently affected by environmental degradation and desertification due to climate change impact on vegetation cover and rainfall amounts and its distribution. In addition, during the last five decades, Sudan has suffered from environmental devastating changes that have undermined food security, which is strongly linked to human displacement and related conflicts. In this study, SPOTVEG NDVI data acquired between 2000 and 2010 were used to produce a vegetation cover map, which was integrated with rainfall map to produce updated ecological zones map for the study area in 2010. This map was compared to that produced in 1958 to analyze the change during the last five decades. The obtained results showed drastic change concerning different ecological zones. The desert class increased by 11%. The Semi-Desert class decreased by approximately 13.2%. The woodland savannah class increased by 6.8%. While, the Mountain vegetation areas decreased approximately by 3%. Finally, the wetland areas completely disappeared in 2010. These results show that during the period 1958-2010, climate change impact increased desertification process, destroyed ecological zones, especially wetland, as well the ecosystems diversity in Central Sudan.

Eco-Climatic Factors Influencing the Distribution of Black Ants (Carebara vidua) in Western Kenya

Black ant, Carebara vidua (Smith) is an edible insect of critical value in nutrition. The population abundance of black ants has reduced drastically and they have become scarce in all the agro ecological zones in Western Kenya. Understanding factors influencing the distribution and abundance of C. vidua remains a challenge as C. vidua is an endangered species in many parts of Country Kenya. The decline in the insect population is worrying since black ants are an important source of food across the world. Our study aimed at determining the eco-climatic conditions influencing the distribution of black ants. Several factors and conditions have contributed to the decline in the population of black ants. The study was carried out in different agro ecological zones of Kisumu, Siaya, and Homabay Counties. The research presumed a cross-sectional approach to community representation. The purposive sampling technique was used to select the population for the qualitative study. Data was collected through Focused Group Discussion and Key Informant Interviews to get in-depth knowledge on the factors contributing to the change in the distribution of back ants. Verbatim transcription was done to the audio recorded data then data was translated into English. Thematic analysis was done using *** software version 7.5. The results showed various factors that led to the change in distribution and reduction of the population of black ants emerging across the lower midland zones, the factors include;climate change, advancement in agricultural equipment, land degradation, and habitat destruction. These factors made the emergence of the insect unpredictable. Over the years across the Lower midland zones, there have been changes in the distribution of C. vidua and the population of insects emerging has reduced hence the insect is disappearing.

The productive performances of Hexi cashmere goats for breeding nucleus groups and producing groups in different production areas were reviewed. At the same time, the productive performances were analyzed. Moreover, the existing problems and solving methods were put forward. In addition, the Hexi cashmere goats was an ancient and native breed, and it was necessary to further improve its productive performance to protect and utilize the breed resource effectively.

The genetic diversity of honeybee populations(240 individual) Apis mellifera from ten various locations of China and Pakistan was investigated by using COI(Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit I) *** screening of sequences,BioEdit was used for the alignment,and these aligned sequences were employed to MEGA-7 software,to find out the phylogenetic relationship with all available subspecies through Neighbor-Joining *** the other hand,genetic divergence was calculated via Kimura-2-Parameter using MEGA7,whereas genetic diversity was calculated by DnaSP *** tree results divided all populations into seven subspecies within two groups and maximum genetic divergence was observed overall at 3.88%,followed by Pakistan at 2.65% while minimum divergence value(2.02%) was observed for ***,significant genetic diversity overall was observed with 23 mutations,confirmed with the probability value of Fu’s Fu at ***-wise observations revealed that Pakistan had much highly significant variability through Fu’s Fu and D tests,along with 17 mutations whereas China had shown less diversity with ten ***,the calculation of nucleotide mismatch distribution had also confirmed genetic variability among all our sequenced ***,our findings have revealed the strong genetic interaction and a significant genetic variation among all seven subspecies of *** from two different *** results could be more helpful to investigate the genetic relationship among other subspecies of *** from different ecological zones.
