Rainfed Crops Forecasting in the Semi-arid Region under Scenarios of Rainfall Instability in Ceará, Brazil

This paper aimed to analyze the projections of rainfed crops(rice,beans,cassava and corn)in the semi-arid region under scenarios of rainfall instability in Ceará,in the period from 1945 to 2020.The data were collected from the Meteorology and Water Resources Foundation of Ceará(FUNCEME)and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics(IBGE),through the IBGE System of Automatic Recovery(SIDRA),which provides data on Municipal Agricultural Production(PAM-2020).The rainfall periods were organized in three categories:drought.normal and rainy periods.This was done using the historical average and standard deviation of rainfall from 1945 to 2020.The projections of production variables were made through the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average(ARIMA)methodology.The results show that the rainfall distribution in CearáState between 1945 and 2020 was quite unstable.The coefficient of variation(CV)of the rainfall periods ranges between 33%in normal period and 54%in the drought.period.Based on the results,it is observed that the general hypothesis of the article was confirmed,showing that rains have an impact on rainfed agricultural production in Cearáin the variables:harvested area,productivity and prices of rice,beans,corn and cassava crops.The results also showed that the cassava crop presents favorable results in relation to the interference of rainfall,suggesting that the crop is better adapted to the climatic adversities of the region.

Satellite image analysis and study of Taklimakan Desert rain trails

The Taklimakan Desert nephsystem and rain trails after heavy precipitation have been moni-tored continuously for 3 years by using TIROS-N/NOAA meteorological satellite of the United States.Observational facts and its statistical characteristics of the desert rain trails are mainly revealed.Main weathersystems which form the deset rain trails are expounded.The significance and some other problems of desertrain trails are also discussed.

Responses of woody plant root and xylem sap ATP to soil drying

The ATP in roots and xylem sap of two woody plant species, Platycladus orientalis and Acacia auriculiformis, subjected to rapid and slow soil drying has been determined employing firefly luciferase ATP assay method (sensitivity is at 10-12 mol ATP L-1). The ATP levels in the two species were 1.6 nmol. gDW-1 and 0.6 nmol. gDW-1 in roots, and 5.6 μmol·m-3 and 8 μmol ·m-3 in xylem sap, respectively. When plants of P. orientalis and A. auriculiformis were subjected to rapid soil drying, respectively, as soil water content （SWC） decreased from the normal level ( 0.2.5 g·gDW-1) to 0.02 and 0.06 g·gDW-1, separately, plant water potential （ ψ ）dropped to - 4 and - 3.2 MPa, differently, the ATP in roots decreased 99.7% and 42%, respectively. When the rapidly dried soil was watered for up to 6 d, SWC and ψ, were found to recover to their normal levels, but ATP content in roots of P. orientalis and A. auriculiformis recovered by 10% and 23%, respectively. DGP1,a drought.induced guard cell-specific promoter and its function analysis in tobacco plants

The genetic regulation of stomatal movement mainly depends on an efficient control system of gene expression, and guard cell-specific promoter is becoming the best choice. Here we combined the dehydration responsive element (DRE) with guard cell specific element (GCSE) to construct a novel promoter, DGP1. Histochemical assays in transgenic tobacco carrying β -glucuronidase (gus) gene fused to DGP1 demonstrated that GUS activity was found to be highly inducible by drought.treatment and specifically restricted to guard cells. No GUS activity was detected in roots, stems or flowers after treatment. Further quantitative analysis showed that GUS activity in the epidermal strips was apparently induced by dehydration and dramatically increased with the elongation of treatment. The GUS activity after 8 h treatment was 179 times that of those without treatment. Although GUS activity in roots, stems or mesophyll increased after treatment, no great changes were observed. These results suggested that DGP1 could drive target gene expressed in guard cells when plant is subjected to drought.stress. And this gets us prepared to control opening and closing of stomata through plant gene engineering.
