Relationships between childhood trauma and dissociative,psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia:a case-control study

Background Childhood trauma(CT)is an important risk factor in the emergence and clinical course of psychiatric disorders.In the latest literature,an association exists between CT and patients with schizophrenia.There is also a strong relationship between the dissociative symptoms of schizophrenia and the presence of CT.Aims The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between CT and dissociative,positive and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.Methods One hundred patients with schizophrenia and 100 healthy volunteers were included in the study.The Sociodemographic Data Form,dissociative Experiences Scale(DES),Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS),and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire(CTQ)were administered to all participants.Results The CTQ and DES scores of the schizophrenia group were significantly higher than those of the control group.In patients with schizophrenia,a positive association was found between positive symptoms and DES scores.In terms of negative symptoms,a positive association was found between apathetic social withdrawal and CTQ-emotional neglect(EN),CTQ-physical neglect(PN)and CTQ total scores.There was a significant positive correlation between CTQ-EN scores and negative symptoms and PANSS scores.No significant relationship was found between negative symptoms and DES scores.Conclusions High rates of CT and dissociative symptoms are seen in patients with schizophrenia.In addition,the findings of the relationship between CT and dissociative,positive and negative symptoms are also noteworthy.Therefore,it may be important for clinicians to assess trauma history during the psychiatric evaluation of patients with schizophrenia.

Much progress has been achieved for both experimental and theoretical studies on the dissociative chemisorption of molecules on surfaces.Quantum state-resolved experimental data has provided unprecedented details for these fundamental steps in heterogeneous catalysis,while the quantitative dynamics is still not fully understood in theory.An in-depth understanding of experimental observations relies on accurate dynamical calculations,in which the potential energy surface and adequate quantum mechanical implementation are desired.This article summarizes the current methodologies on the construction of potential energy surfaces and the quantum mechanical treatments,some of which are promising for future applications.The challenges in this field are also addressed.

Kinetics of dissociative adsorption of formic acid on electrodes of tetrahexahedral platinum nanocrystals

In the present paper we study the kinetics of dissociative adsorption of formic acid on the electrode of tetrahexahedral platinum nanocrystals (THH Pt NCs). In situ FTIR spectroscopic results demonstrate that HCOOH can be oxidized to CO2 at a low potential (-0.2 V(SCE)) on the THH Pt NCs electrode, and the chemical bonds inside formic acid molecule are broken to form adsorbed COL species. The kinetics of the dissociative adsorption of HCOOH was quantitatively investigated by employing programmed potential step technique. It has been determined that, in 5 × 10-3 mol·L-1 HCOOH + 0.1 mol·L-1 H2SO4 solution, the maximal value of the average rate (υamax) of dissociative adsorption of HCOOH on a commercial Pt/C catalyst electrode is 8.58 × 10-10 mol·cm-2·s-1, while on the THH Pt NCs the υamax is 1.5 times larger than the υamax measured on Pt/C and reaches 13.19 × 10-10 mol·cm-2·s-1. The results have revealed that the reactivity of the THH Pt NCs is much higher than that of the Pt/C catalysts.

dissociative convulsions, a prominent form of dissociative (conversion) disorder formerly known as hysteria, are a common and elusive differential diagnosis from epilepsy. However, the treatment of such patients is always challenging and frustrating due to poor response to the routinely used interventions in most situations. Here, we present a case with dissociative convulsions in order to catch the eye of the clinicians and researchers on the recognition of clinical manifestation and exploration of therapeutic strategies.

Quantum dynamics of dissociative adsorption of H_2 on Ni(100) using the dynamical Lie algebraic method

A dynamical Lie algebraic method has been applied to treating the quantum dynamics of dissociative adsorption of H2 on a static flat metal surface. An LEPS potential energy surface has been used to describe the interaction of H2 with Ni（100） surface. The dependence of the initial state-selected dissociation probability was obtained analytically on the initial kinetic energy and time. A comparison with other theoretical calculations and experiments is made. The results show that the method can be effectively used to describe the dynamics of reactive gas-surface scattering.

Quantum dynamics of dissociative adsorption of H_2 and D_2:The time-dependent wave packet method

A time dependent quantum wave packet method was used to study the dynamics of dissociative adsorption of H 2 and D 2 on a flat and static surface. The molecule surface interaction is described using a modified London Eyring Polanyi Sato (LEPS) type potential for the H 2/Ni(100) system. The three dimensional (3 D) dissociation probabilities were calculated for different initial rovibrational states as a function of initial incident energies. Our results show that the dissociation of the diatomic rotational states whose quantum numbers satisfy j+m =odd is forbidden at low energies for the homonuclear H 2 and D 2 due to the selection rule. The effect of the rotational orientation of diatoms on adsorption predicts that the in plane rotation (m=j) is more favorable for dissociation than the out of plane rotation (m=0) . Enhanced dissociation for vibrationally excited molecules and the significant enhancement of the dissociation probability of H 2 when compared to D 2 were explained reasonably in terms of quantum mechanical zero point energies, the tunneling effect and the reflection from an activation barrier.

dissociative disorder presenting as foreign accent syndrome

The foreign accent syndrome(FAS) is a rare speech disorder, characterised by the appearance of a new accent, different from the speaker's native language and perceived as foreign by others. In the majority of patients, FAS is secondary to focal brain damage caused by stroke or other neurological disorders. Infrequently, FAS has been reported in association with psychiatric disorders, including dissociative or conversion disorders. The case of a young woman with recurrent episodes of speaking with a foreign accent is described. Repeated neurological examinations, imaging and electroencephalography did not reveal any brain abnormality. However, there was a history of a difficult childhood, alcohol dependence in the father, parental discord, alleged sexual abuse in the past, interpersonal difficulties and parental death. Episodes were precipitated by stressful life circumstances and resolved spontaneously, or with supportive treatment. She had additional "suspect" symptoms such as non-epileptic seizures, aphonia and motor paralysis. All these features indicated that a dissociative disorder was involved in the genesis of her FAS. The influence of external factors such as the media was unclear. Generally biological factors have been implicated in the onset of FAS, but the presentation in this young woman suggests that psychological factors such as personality, trauma, stressful life events and psychiatric disorder; familial factors such as parental discord and parental death and family conflicts; and, social factors such the possible influence of the media may also be involved in the production of foreign accents by patients.

Dissociation and disasters: A systematic review

BACKGROUND Dissociation,which is defined as the failure to associate consciousness,memory,identity,emotion,perception,body representation,motor control,and behavior into an integrated whole,has long been assumed to be generated by trauma.If dissociation is a product of trauma exposure,then dissociation would be a major mental health outcome observed in studies of disaster survivors.Although some studies have examined dissociation in disasters,no systematic literature reviews have been conducted to date on the topic.AIM To systematically evaluate the literature on the association between disaster and dissociation to determine the prevalence and incidence of dissociation after exposure to disaster and further examine their relationship.METHODS EMBASE,Medline,and PsychINFO were searched from inception to January 1,2019 to identify studies examining dissociative disorders or symptoms related to a disaster in adult or child disaster survivors and disaster responders.Studies of military conflicts and war,articles not in English,and those with samples of 30 or more participants were excluded.Search terms used were“disaster*”and dissociation(“dissociat*,”“multiple personality,”“fugue,”“psychogenic amnesia,”“derealization,”and“depersonalization”).Reference lists of identified articles were scrutinized to identify studies for additional articles.RESULTS The final number of articles in the review was 53,including 36 articles with samples of adults aged 18 and above,5 of children/adolescents under age 18,and 12 of disaster workers.Included articles studied several types of disasters that occurred between 1989 and 2017,more than one-third(38%)from the United States.Only two studies had a primary aim to investigate dissociation in relation to disaster and none reported data on dissociative disorders.All of the studies used self-report symptom scales;none used structured interviews providing full diagnostic assessment of dissociative disorders or other psychopathology.Several studies mixed exposed and unexposed samples or did n
