Herein, I summarize some basic components of rodent social biology. The material in this paper is summarized andcondensed from a recent book “Rodent Societies: An Ecological and Evolutionary Perspective” edited by J. O.Wolff and P. W. Sherman (2007). I describe the four basic spacing patterns and illustrate how female territoriality isa function of offspring defense and male mating tactics are a function of female defensibility. The vulnerability ofyoung to infanticide shapes female spacing and mating behavior. Food does not appear to be a defensible resourcefor rodents, except for those species that larder hoard nonperishable items such as seeds. Philopatry and theformation of kin groups result in genetic sub-structuring of the population, which in turn affects effectivepopulation size and genetic diversity. dispersal is male biased and typically involves emigration from the maternalsite to avoid female relatives and to seek unrelated mates. Scent marking is a major form of communication and isused in reproductive competition and to assess prospective mates, but it is also eavesdropped by predators to locateprey. Females do not appear to alter the sex ratio of litters in response to maternal condition but among arvicolinerodents daughters appear to be favored in spring and sons in autumn. Rodents are relatively monomorphic;however, females tend to be larger than males in the smallest species and smaller in the larger species. Predationrisk results from an interaction among foraging time and vulnerability and in turn affects behavioral and life historycharacteristics.

Interbasin water transfer projects(IBWT's)have emerged as dispersal corridors for aquatic species.However,little is known about how water transfer affects regional spread dynamics,or shapes the genetic diversity patterns of non-native populations.Shimofuri Goby Tridentiger bifasciatus is a globally introduced fish species with many wellestablished populations in IBWT's.Here,we used nuclear microsatellites to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of the Shimofuri Goby in its native and introduced sites belonging to two IBWT's in China.Our objectives were to(1)reveal the genetic diversity patterns of the Shimofuri Goby during regional spread,and(2)identify its mode of spreading in water transfer systems.We observed(1)a high level of genetic diversity in non-native populations without evidence of bottleneck effects,(2)that non-native populations with a longer water transfer times had a higher private allele richness,and(3)that non-native populations showed a highly mixed genetic structure,low level of genetic differentiation,and no significant relationship between geographical and genetic distances.Our results indicate that the genetic patterns of diversity of non-native populations are mainly shaped by a linear cascade spread processes due to long-distance movement of larvae,and are probably related to propagule pressure caused by the construction of water transfer.To manage the non-native populations of T.bifasciatus,preventive actions and physical removal should be implemented in IBWT's.

The diurnal activity patterns, trypanosome infection rates and movement of Glossinafuscipesfuscipes （Diptera： Glossinidae） were investigated in Buvuma Island, Lake Victoria, Uganda. Hourly trapping of tsetse flies was undertaken to determine their activity rhythm while a capture-mark-release-recapture method was conducted to assess the movement and dispersal of tsetse flies between lakeshore, hinterland and further inland sites along a transected area. Dissection of tsetse flies was also undertaken to determine the trypanosome infection rates in salivary glands, proboscis and mid-gut. Results indicated a bimodal diurnal activity profile for G. f fuscipes on the Island, both on the lakeshore and in the hinterland. Movement and dispersal of G. f fuscipes tsetse flies occurred between lakeshore, hinterland and further inland sites with a greater tendency of flies to move to the lakeshore. Trypanosome infection rates of 4.32% for Trypasoma vivax and 1.15% for 7. congolense were found in G. f. fuscipes.

In this paper, a Lotka-Volterra type predator-prey model with time delays due to gestation of the predator and dispersal for both the prey and the predator is investigated. We first establish two different results on the permanence of the system. Using coincidence degree theory, sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of positive periodic solutions, and by constructing an appropriate Lyapunov functional, we further discuss their uniqueness and global stability. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the main results.

The dissemination of cattle brucellosis in Zhejiang province of China can be attributed to the transport of cattle between cities within the province. In this paper,an n-patch dynamical model is proposed to study the effect of cattle dispersal on brucellosis spread. Theoretically,we analyze the dynamical behavior of the muti-patch model. For the 2-patch submodel,sensitivity analyses of the basic reproduction number R0 and the number of the infectious cattle in term of model parameters are carried out. By numerical analysis,it is obtained that the dispersal of susceptible cattle between patches and the centralization of infected cattle to the large scale patch can alleviate the epidemic and are in favor of the control of disease in the whole region.

Many ecological and social factors have influenced the rapid invasion and spread of Ageratina. adenophora into the eastern Himalayas,with its heterogeneous natural environment.We focused on how diverse biological traits may couple with spatiotemporally heterogeneous geography and ecology, and promote rapid invasion.Spatial and temporal distribution data were collected from literature and private and public collections.We mapped the spatial and temporal distribution of A.adenophora in the Hengduan Mountains,then used binary logistic regression to identify variables that contribute to its spread.Join-count statistics were used to analyze geographic patterns.Our analyses reveal that water, wind,elevation,and human activities significantly affect the distribution of A.adenophora along the Yalongjiang River,Jinshajiang-Yangtze River,Anninghe River,G108 national road and rail line. Invasion occurs in a compact or scattered manner depending on dispersal pathway and times. Biological traits favor dispersal by water and wind.Human activities along roads and rail lines facilitate invasion over high mountains and across river valleys,and provide scope for further natural dispersal.An unexpected and rare invasion event resulted from a great flood;this amplified the dispersal ability of this plant both from vegetative propagules and seed production.

A new preparation technique-"block dispersal and cast" method is introduced, and three kinds of powder mixing methods, vertical, horizontal and inclining styles, are compared. The results demonstrate that the inclining style is the best way to mix powders. The Al and nano SiC powders are pressed into blocks, dipped into molten Al, stirred into mold so that SiC/Al matrix composites can be obtained at last. The microstructure of SiC particle reinforced Al matrix composite prepared by "block dispersal and cast" method have been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Phase analysis has also been conducted by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that nano SiC particles can be dispersed uniformly in Al matrix. Thus, it is feasible to prepare SiC particle reinforced Al matrix composites by this method.
