The effect of long-term traditional Chinese medicine treatment on disease-free survival of postoperative stage I-III lung cancer patients:a retrospective cohort study

Objective:Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has been extensively used as one of popular alternative therapies for several ***,it remains unclear whether TCM treatment is associated with longer survival in lung cancer *** this study,we explored the effect of long-term TCM treatment on patients with different stages of lung ***:All information of lung cancer patients with stage I-III disease from January 2007 to September 2015 was collected for this retrospective cohort *** who were treated with TCM after surgery were divided into TCM group and the others were into the non-TCM group(control group).All patients were regularly followed up by clinic appointment or phone,and all survival data were collected from databases after the last follow-up in October ***:A total of 575 patients were included in this study,with 299 patients in the TCM group and 276 in the control *** all patients,5-year disease-free survival(DFS)was 62.2% in TCM group and 42.1% in the control group,and 6-year DFSs were 51.8% and 35.4%,respectively(HR=0.51,95% CI:0.40 to 0.66,log-rank P≤0.001).For patients with stage I,5-year DFSs were 83.7%(TCM group)and 57.5%(control group)and 6-year DFSs were 73.7% and 51.9%,respectively(HR=0.30,95% CI:0.18 to 0.50,log-rank P≤0.001).For patients with stage II in the TCM group and the control group,5-year DFSs were 59.4% and 17.6% and 6-year DFSs were 44.7% and 17.6%,respectively(HR=0.31,95% CI:0.19 to 0.52,log-rank P≤0.001),and for patients with stage III,5-year and 6-year DFSs in the TCM group were 18.7% and 12.5% compared with 28.4% and 20.3% in the control group(HR=1.06,95% CI:0.72 to 1.56,log-rank P=0.76).Conclusions:This study demonstrated that long-term TCM treatment as an adjuvant therapy is able to improve the DFS of postoperative stage I-III lung cancer patients,especially in patients with stage I and II ***,these observational findings need being validated by large sample randomized control

Long-term disease-free survival in a dog with appendicular osteosarcoma

Postoperative prognosis is generally poor even with adjuvant chemotherapy in dogs with an appendicular osteosarcoma. The purpose of this report was to present the long-term disease-free survival time in a dog with appendicular osteosarcoma receiving amputation,adjuvant chemotherapy and adoptive immunotherapy. A 12-year-old spayed Golden retriever was referred to our hospital with a suspicion of osteosarcoma in right distal radius. The patient underwent the computed tomography (CT) and incisional biopsy on the next day after the first presentation. The CT revealed the osteolysis in the right distal radius and no metastases in the lungs and lymph nodes. The histopathologic diagnosis was made as an osteosarcoma. On the 13th day after,the patient underwent right forelimb amputation. Six doses of carboplatin (250 mg / m2) were postoperatively administered every 3 weeks. The intravenous infusion of lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells suspension was performed every 3 ~ 4 weeks after the adjuvant chemotherapy. At the time of our writing this abstract (on the 880thday after the first presentation),no recurrences and metastases were observed after the 32 transfers of LAK cells. In canine appendicular osteosarcoma,some reports have described that postoperative median survival times were 235 ~ 540 d with adjuvant chemotherapy. In our report,the disease free interval and survival time were prolonged compared with the previous reports. We strongly believed that early diagnosis and surgical intervention and adoptive immunotherapy had a great impact on the improvement of survival time in canine appendicular osteosarcoma.

Patients with coronary artery disease vary widely in terms of prognosis, which is mainly dependent on ventricular function. In relation to the major outcomes of death and myocardial infarction, it is not clear in the literature if an invasive strategy of myocardial revascularization is superior to a conservative strategy of optimized medical therapy. Moreover, with the exception of patients with left main coronary disease, this similarity in prognosis also occurs in different subgroups of patients.

Objective:To evaluate the association between Chinese medicine(CM)therapy and disease-free survival(DFS)outcomes in postoperative patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Methods:This multiple-center prospective cohort study was conducted in 13 medical centers in *** with stage I,II,or IDA NSCLC who had undergone radical resection and received conventional postoperative treatment according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network(NCCN)guidelines were *** recruited patients were divided into a CM treatment group and a control group according to their *** in the CM treatment group received continuous CM therapy for more than 6 months or until disease *** in the control group received CM therapy for less than 1 ***-up was 8nducted over 3 *** primary outcome was DFS,with recurrence/metastasis rates as a secondary ***:Between May 2013 and August 2016,503 patients were enrolled into the cohort;266 were classified in the CM treatment group and 237 in the control *** for covariates,high exposure to CM was associated with better DFS[hazard ratio(HR)=0.417,95%confidential interval(Cl):0.307-0.567)].A longer duration of CM therapy(6-12 months,12-18 months,>24 months)was associated with lower recurrence and metastasis rates(HR=0.225,0.119 and 0.083,respectively).In a subgroup exploratory analysis,CM therapy was also a protective factor of cancer recurrence and metastasis in both stage n-MA(HR=0.50,95%Cl:0.37-0.67)and stage IDA NSCLC postoperative patients(HR=0.48,95%Cl:0.33-0.71),DFS was even longer among CM treatment group ***:Lon ger duration of CM therapy could be 8nsidered a protective factor of cancer recurrence and *** treatment is associated with improving survival outcomes of postoperative NSCLC patients in China.

Adjuvant treatment for triple-negative breast cancer: a retrospective study of immunotherapy with autologous cytokine-induced killer cells in 294 patients

Objective: To examine the efficacy and safety of a sequential combination of chemotherapy and autologous cytokine-induced killer(CIK) cell treatment in triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC) ***: A total of 294 post-surgery TNBC patients participated in the research from January 1, 2009 to January 1, 2015. After adjuvant chemotherapy, autologous CIK cells were introduced in 147 cases(CIK group), while adjuvant chemotherapy alone was used to treat the remaining 147 cases(control group). The major endpoints of the investigation were the disease-free survival(DFS) and overall survival(OS). Additionally, the side effects of the treatment were ***: In the CIK group, the DFS and OS intervals of the patients were significantly longer than those of the control group(DFS:P = 0.047;OS: P = 0.007). The multivariate analysis demonstrated that the TNM(tumor-node-metastasis) stage and adjuvant CIK treatment were independent prognostic factors for both DFS [hazard ratio(HR)= 0.520, 95% confidence interval(CI):0.271-0.998, P = 0.049;HR = 1.449, 95% CI:1.118-1.877, P = 0.005, respectively] and OS(HR=0.414, 95% CI:0.190-0.903, P = 0.027;HR= 1.581, 95% CI:1.204-2.077, P = 0.001, respectively) in patients with TNBC. Additionally, longer DFS and OS intervals were associated with increased number of CIK treatment cycles(DFS: P = 0.020;OS: P = 0.040). The majority of the patients who benefitted from CIK cell therapy were relatively early-stage TNBC ***: Chemotherapy in combination with adjuvant CIK could be used to lower the relapse and metastasis rate, thus effectively extending the survival time of TNBC patients, especially those at early stages.

Effect of a modified Banxia Xiexin decoction plus chemotherapy on stage Ⅲ colon cancer

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a modified Banxia Xiexin decoction(MBXD) plus chemotherapy on postoperative adverse reaction in patients with stage Ⅲ colon cancer in patients whose symptoms were identified as cold-heat complicated pattern in terms of the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).METHODS: A prospective non-randomized control study of patients with stage Ⅲ colon cancer in Beijing Shijitan Hospital and Guang'anmen Hospital between January 2012 and December 2013. A total of 80 patients were divided into experimental group(MBXD + chemotherapy) and control group(chemotherapy). The adverse reactions, life quality and disease-free survival(DFS) were compared between the two ***: The cold-heat complex pattern was released in 94.3% of patients in experimental group whereas 62.2% in control group(P < 0.05). Life quality was improved in 24 vs 14 cases, stabilized in 9 vs14 cases whereas decreased in 2 vs 15 cases in experimental group and control group, respectively(P < 0.05). The average DFS was 22.371 months in experimental group, while 13.932 months in control group(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: MBXD combined with chemotherapy may significantly relieve clinical symptoms, reduce chemotherapy associated adverse effects, improve life quality, and prolong DFS of patients with stage Ⅲ colon cancer(cold-heat complicated pattern).

Efficacy and safety of Yiqi Huoxue Jiedu decoction for the treatment of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer patients: a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial

OBJECTIVE:To further evaluate the complementary effect of Yiqi Huoxue Jiedu decoction(YHJD)on patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer(EOC).METHODS:All 330 enrolled participants diagnosed with stageⅢc EOC were randomly divided into two groups that received YHJD or a *** primary end point was health-related quality of life(HRQL)measured by the functional assessment of cancer therapy-ovary cancer(FACT-O)*** secondary end point was progression-free survival(PFS).RESULTS:A total of 299 participants completed the trial with 153 and 146 in YHJD and control groups,*** 6 months of treatment,YHJD increased physical wellbeing(PWB),functional wellbeing(FWB),additional concerns(AC),and the trial outcome index(TOI)(P<0.05)by various degrees compared with the *** also had notable advantages over the placebo at 3 and 6 months in terms of PWB,FWB,AC(P<0.05),and TOI(P<0.01).In addition,YHJD had a significant advantage in terms of PFS compared with the placebo(21 vs18 months,P<0.05).No adverse events were ***:YHJD is an effective and safe choice as a complementary therapy to improve HRQL and prolong PFS of stageⅢc EOC patients.

A new tumor-associated antigen prognostic scoring system for spontaneous ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma after partial hepatectomy

Prognostic significance of computed tomography-detected extramural vascular invasion in colon cancer

AIM: To compare disease-free survival(DFS) between extramural vascular invasion(EMVI)-positive and-negative colon cancer patients evaluated by computed tomography(CT).METHODS: Colon cancer patients(n = 194) undergoing curative surgery between January 2009 and December 2013 were included. Each patient's demographics, cancer characteristics, EMVI status, pathological status and survival outcomes were recorded. All included patients had been routinely monitored until December 2015. EMVI was defined as tumor tissue within adjacent vessels beyond the colon wall as seen on enhanced CT. disease recurrence was defined as metachronous metastases, local recurrence, or death due to colon cancer. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to compare DFS between the EMVI-positive and-negative groups. Cox's proportional hazards models were used to measure the impact of confounding variables on survival ***: EMVI was observed on CT(ct EMVI) in 60 patients(30.9%, 60/194). One year after surgery, there was no statistically significant difference regarding the rates of progressive events between EMVI-positive and-negative patients [11.7%(7/60) and 6.7%(9/134), respectively; P = 0.266]. At the study endpoint, the EMVI-positive patients had significantly more progressive events than the EMVI-negative patients [43.3%(26/60) and 14.9%(20/134), respectively; oddsratio = 4.4, P disease progression in colon cancer patients.

Correlation of radiotherapy with prognosis of elderly patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer according to immunohistochemical subtyping

Objective: The present study examined the effect of radiotherapy on recurrence and survival in elderly patients with hormone receptor-positive early breast ***: A retrospective analysis of 327 patients aged ≥65 years, with stage I-II, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who underwent breast-conserving surgery and received endocrine therapy(ET) or radiotherapy plus endocrine therapy(ET+RT) was performed. Both groups were divided into luminal A type and luminal B type subgroups. Evaluation criteria were 5-year disease-free survival(DFS), local relapse rate(LRR), overall survival(OS), and distant metastasis rate(DMR).Results: There were significant differences in 5-year DFS [hazard ratio(HR)=1.59, 95% confidence interval(95% CI), 1.15-2.19;P=0.005] and LRR(HR=3.33, 95% CI, 1.51-7.34;P=0.003), whereas there were no significant differences in OS and DMR between ET group and ET+RT group. In luminal A type, there was no significant difference in 5-year DFS, LRR, OS and DMR between ET group and ET+RT group. In luminal B type,there were statistically significant differences in 5-year DFS(HR=2.19, 95% CI, 1.37-3.49;P=0.001), LRR(HR=5.45, 95% CI, 1.65-17.98;P=0.005), and OS(HR=1.75, 95% CI, 1.01-3.05;P=0.048) between ET group and ET+RT group. In the ET group, there were significant differences between luminal A type and luminal B type in5-year DFS(HR=1.84, 95% CI, 1.23-2.75;P=0.003) and OS(HR=1.76, 95% CI, 1.07-2.91;P=0.026).Conclusions: After breast-conserving surgery, radiotherapy can reduce the LRR and improve the DFS and OS of luminal B type elderly patients, whereas luminal A type elderly patients do not benefit from *** radiotherapy, luminal A type patients have better DFS and OS than luminal B type patients.
