diatom distribution of surface sediment in the Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea

diatoms from surface sediment samples in the Bering and Chukchi seas were analyzed to reveal the distribution patterns and their relationship with the ocean environment. A low abundance was found to the north of the Arctic Sea ice Minimum （ASIMin）, indicating that diatom growth is strongly inhibited by perennial sea ice. Between the ASIMin and the Arctic Sea Ice Maximum （ASIMax） which experiences seasonal sea ice, the sea ice related diatoms （mainly Fragilariopsis oceanica and Fragi- lariopsis cylindrus） were dominant, thereby confirming that sea ice is an important influencing factor. The Chaetoceros resting spores were more abundant in the Chukchi Sea, which corresponds well with the active phytoplankton distribution in the water column, and is possibly attributed to the stronger hydrodynamic conditions present in the Bering Sea. The abundances of Chaeto- ceros resting spores were the lowest on the northeast Bering Shelf, possibly because of lower water depth, stronger coastal cur- rents, river influx, coarser particle sizes and stronger winds and bottom currents. The Arctic diatom Group （dominated by Bac- terosira bathyomphala, Thalassiosira antarctica v. borealis and Thalassiosira antarctica resting spores） was more abundant in the Bering Basin and the areas central of and to the north of Chukchi Plateau, while the Coastal Benthic diatoms （including Paralia sulcata and Delphineis surirella） were mainly found on the northeast Bering Shelf and nearby Cape Lisburne in the Chukchi Sea. Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii was found to be the most abundant around the Bering Strait, while Neodenticula seminae was only found in the Bering Sea and mainly distributed in the Bering Basin, indicating its close correlation with the Pacific waters

New Genus and Species of diatom Endemic in Lake Rani of Haryana, India

diatoms are unicellular plant algae which are found in almost all the waterbodies. Different diatoms respond differently to different environmental changes, there existence depending on the environmental factor of a particular place. A new diatom type was discovered in the lake Rani of Jind District of Haryana for the first time. Jind is an important district lying in the north of Haryana state located 75。53' and 76。47' East longitudes and between 29。03’ and 29。51’ North latitudes. It has a beautiful lake named as Rani Talab (Lake) which is famous for tourist visit and is located in the centre of the city. The pH of this water body ranges between 6.5 to 8.3, conductivity between 0.21 to 0.294 m?mho?cm-1 with temperature ranging between 19.5℃ to 35℃ for two consecutive years 2008-2009 and 2009 - 2010. The newly discovered diatom is the only diatom which inhabits one particular Lake Rani of Haryana, it is not found elsewhere in India and any other database of diatoms generated so far in any other part of the world. The new genus was discovered by Vinayak V. et al in the process of creation of diatom database from Haryana State of India for the first time. The new genus was named as Eunocymbellarania vandana for its genus name derived from Eunotia and Cymbella and its close affinity to these two diatoms and its origin place ‘Lake Rani’, but the species name ‘vandana ‘ is from diatomist

Influence of Three diatom Aldehydes against the Dengue Vector <i>Aedes aegypti</i>(Diptera: Culicidae)

Larvae of several mosquito species being vectors of infectious diseases as adults feed on algae in their natural habitat. Algal food comes along with bioactive compounds providing important chemical defenses against predators, competitors, and pathogens. Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus in Hasselquist, 1762) is commonly called yellow fever mosquito, being a vector of several fatal diseases such as dengue fever, zika fever, chikungunya, and yellow fever. In this study, we have investigated the susceptibility of larvae of A. aegypti mosquitos to three most commonly studied diatom aldehydes-2-trans, 4-trans heptadienal (HD), 2-trans, 4-trans octadienal (OD), and 2-trans, 4-trans-decadienal (DD). In the experiments, instar-I and -IV larvae of Ae. aegypti were exposed to above PUAs for different time intervals. Both mosquito instars were susceptible to HD, OD and DD. Instar-I larvae were more susceptible compared to instar-IV. The percentage of mortality of both instar larvae was higher with greater concentrations of each tested PUA. Furthermore, mosquito larvae, tested on DD applied medium was estimated to be more susceptible followed by OD and then by HD. After 24 h observation, LC 50 value was the lowest for DD (0.64 μL/40mL), followed by OD (0.88 μL/40mL) and HD (1.47 μL/40mL) respectively. In current scenarios, our results suggest that natural aldehydes from diatoms could provide promising public health benefits by controlling mosquito vector populations. Furthermore, an in-depth study of the interaction between primary producers and mosquito immatures in nature could provide several advancements in vector control research and management.

Composition and distribution of diatom assemblages in the surface sediments of the Bering Sea

diatoms collected from the top 1 cm of the surface sediment layer at seven Bering Sea stations during the Fourth Chi- nese National Arctic Research Expedition （4th CH1NARE-Arctic） in 2010 were studied. In total, 101 taxa belonging to 38 genera were found. The species were divided into four groups： eurythermal species, boreal-temperate species, polar species, and sea-ice species. The diatom assemblages at the stations in the southwestern basin area were primarily composed of boreal-temperate species, such as Neodenticula seminae, Thalassiosira trifulta, Rhizosolenia hebetata f. hiemalis, and Actinocyclus curvatulus. The northeastern shelf stations were dominated by polar species, including Fragilariopsis oceanica, Thalassiosira antarctica spora, Thalassiosira nordensldoeldii, and Thalassiosira hyalina. The overall abundance was highest at the basin stations with 3.7 ×10^6 cells·g^-1 of wet sediment, whereas the eastern shelf stations had the lowest abundance of 0.7×10^6 cells·g^-1 of wet sediment （excluding the resting spores of Chaetoceros spp.）. The relationship between the distribution of the surface sediment diatom assemblages and the environment is discussed.

A fishy odor episode in a north China reservoir: Occurrence, origin, and possible odor causing compounds

A significant outbreak of fishy odor occurred in a reservoir located in Inner Mongolia, China, in the winter of 2011, and the odor rating, algal density and concentrations of some potential odorous compounds were monitored over a period of two months. The peak odor rating of the fishy odor was 7 according to flavor profile analysis. Among the dominant algal species （two diatom and one chrysophyte species） observed during the survey, the chrysophyte Dinobryon sp. was the most abundant species, with the peak density recorded at 88,520 cells/mL. Seven potential algal metabolites including heptanal, 2,4-heptadienal, 2,4-decadienal, nonanal, 2-octenal, 2,6- nonadienal and hexanal were detected. The principal component analysis result showed that n-hexanal, n-heptanal and 2,4-decadienal, possibly the metabolites of diatoms, and 2,4-heptadienal, possibly the metabolite of Dinobryon sp., might have contributed to the fishy odor episode. This study demonstrated that the fishy odor episode in this reservoir might be caused by the abnormal growth of chrysophytes and diatoms under the ice-cover.

Biomass,species composition and diversity of benthic diatoms in mangroves of the Houyu Bay,China

The biomass, species composition and diversity of benthic diatom assemblages in mud-flat soils in Kandelia candel (L.) Druce communities with and without vegetation were studied seasonally at the Houyu Bay in Fuding City, Fujian Province, China. A total of 103 taxa were identified (including varieties). Eighty-four taxa were found in the mud-flat with vegetation and 74 taxa in the mud-flat without vegetation, while the biomass was large in January and April and decreased from July to October. The most abundant species in the mud-flat with vegetation are Nitzschia cocconeiformis, Gyrosigma scalproides and N. fasciculata, compared with G. scalproides and N. obtusa var. scalpelliformis in the mud-flat without vegetation. High H' values at 2 sites during all seasons suggest that diatom assemblages in the sediments of the Houyu Bay represent an original environment. Multi-dimensional scaling of diatom assemblages from mud-flats with and without vegetation shows that a slight seasonal change and only a single association occur in the mangroves.

Internal valves in populations of Meridion circulare from the A’er Mountain region of northeastern China:Implications for taxonomy and systematics

A population of Meridion circulare var.circulare(Greville) C.A.Agardh from Inner Mongolia was found to produce Innenschalen or internal spores.Examination of this population with light and scanning electron microscopy showed morphological differentiation between vegetative and spore morphologies.Vegetative valves typically bear costae and one rimoportula at the headpole.Spores lack costae and have two rimoportulae,one at the headpole and the other at the footpole.There is plasticity in the production of valve morphologies,and a variety of vegetative valve and spore combinations are evident.This population of M.circulare var.circulare has initial valves of over 90 μm in length,and all of the initial cells encountered are acostate and bear two rimoportulae.These observations suggest that either spores are the product of sexual reproduction,or that initial valves may be produced parthenogenetically in Meridion.Spores as products of the sexual process have not been reported in diatoms previously,and parthenogenesis in Meridion was reported previously but discounted in other published reports.The plasticity of valve morphologies expressed in M.circulare var.ciculare,between vegetative valves and spores(and back) across a short temporal period suggests that diatoms can alter their cell wall structure dramatically and quickly in response to external variables.

Spatial-temporal dynamics of biogenic silica in the southern Yellow Sea

Concentrations of biogenic silica(BSi) in the southern Yellow Sea were determined during four cruises(spring:April–May 2014;autumn: November 2014;summer: August–September 2015;winter: January 2016). Samples of BSi were measured using the double extraction method. Seasonal and spatial variations of BSi and the potential correlation between chlorophyll a(Chl a) content and BSi in four seasons were measured in this study. Significant spatial variability was observed in seawater BSi concentrations. The average concentration of BSi was highest in winter and lowest in spring. Furthermore, the relationships between concentrations of BSi and hydrological parameters were also discussed. There was a significant positive correlation between Chl a and BSi. The concentrations of BSi showed significant relationships with temperature and the concentrations of silicates, total inorganic nitrogen and total inorganic phosphorus, indicating that distribution of BSi was affected by temperature and nutrient level.

Temperature and silicate are significant driving factors for the seasonal shift of dominant diatoms in a drinking water reservoir

The individual or combined ef fect of water temperature and silicate on seasonal shift of dominant diatom species in a drinking water reservoir in China was studied in this paper. These ef fects were analyzed based on the field investigation of temporal dynamics in species composition and abundance of phytoplankton and environmental factors from September 2015 to August 2016. We firstly found that six dominant diatom species( Fragilaria nanana, Achnanthidium catenatum, Aulacoseira ambigua, Ulnaria ulna, Cyclotella meneghiniana and Asterionella formosa(Class Bacillariophyceae)), which accounted for98.7% of the total abundance of diatoms and 46.8% of the total abundance of phytoplankton, showed an obvious seasonal succession. Then significant driving factors for seasonal shift of the dominant diatom species were selected by Redundancy Analysis. The result showed that water temperature and silicate were the main environmental factors af fecting the growth of diatoms on temporal scales. Next, the regressions of water temperature and silicate and dominant diatom abundance were fitted in Generalized Additive Model separately, and the smoothers of water temperature and diatom species suggested that the dominant diatom species adapted to dif ferent optimum temperature ranges, which corresponded with the growth of seasonal changes. A positive linear correlation between silicate and diatom abundance was generated by Generalized Additive Model. Finally, the ordinal controls of water temperature and silicate on the growth of diatoms were analyzed on temporal scales specifically. We suggested that water temperature and silicate controlling the growth of diatoms in order. diatoms grow well only when the two controlling factors simultaneously satisfy the growth conditions; as limiting factors, the two factors played their respective limiting roles in turn on temporal scales.

Effect of Temperature on the Release of Transparent Exopolymer Particles(TEP)and Aggregation by Marine diatoms(Thalassiosira weissflogii and Skeletonema marinoi)

The presence of diatoms is accompanied by the production of a large amount of extracellular polymeric substances,which are mainly composed of carbohydrates.Transparent exopolymer particles(TEP)are a large class of extracellular polymeric substances with high stickiness that promotes the formation of aggregates and marine snow,which affects marine bio-carbon pump efficiency.The purpose of this research was to determine how temperature increases affect the allocation of cellular carbohydrates and the formation and aggregation of TEP.The results showed that the responses of two different diatom species(Thalassiosira weissflogii and Skeletonema marinoi)differed according to temperature.The cell density and chlorophyll a concentration of the former were not significantly correlated with temperature,while those of the latter were significantly decreased with increasing temperature.This indicates that the two species of diatom may have different heat tolerance ranges.A temperature increase will promote significant formation of TEP by both types of diatoms,including aggregation of S.marinoi as the temperature rises,meaning that the high temperature will produce an aggregate with a larger particle size and thus may increase the sedimentation rate of organic carbon.Moreover,the TEP aggregation of T.weissflogii did not increase;therefore,its particle size was smaller,and so it may remain on the sea surface at high temperatures for longer periods.These influences have a profound impact on the biogeochemical cycling of carbon.
