A systematic investigation was carried out to observe the deposition rate of a diamond-like carbon(DLC) coating on two stainless steel substrates by chemical vapor deposition(CVD). The objective of this research is to study the deposition behavior of the DLC coating and its tribological properties in different combinations of methane(CH_4) and nitrogen, which were used as precursor gases. The results reveal that the deposition rate increases with increasing CH_4 content up to 50 vol%. The hardness of the DLC-deposited layer also increases while the friction coefficient decreases with increasing CH_4 gas content up to 50% in the precursor gas mixture.

Tribological properties of non-hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were investigated under humid (RH=80%) and dry (RH=5%) air. These films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at different substrate temperatures. Tribological properties of DLC fabricated by PLD is not sensitive to the relative humidity of testing environment. Because of the unique growth mechanism of DLC pre- pared by PLD, DLC is of "soft-hard" double layers, having a very low friction coefficient and wear rate under humid atmosphere. The minimum coefficient and wear rate of film under humid circumstance are 0.045 and 5.94×10?10 mm3N-1m-1, respectively, just a little bit more than those under dry condition. The root means square roughness of film is less than 1 nm. The sp3 content of film grown at room tem- perature (RT) is 72%, and the sp3 content decreases with temperature. Raman spectrum shows that the micro-structure is amorphous network. The largest hardness and elastic modulus of film are 51 GPa and 350 GPa, respectively and they reduce with increase of deposition temperature too. Water contact angles on surface are more than 90° which indicates that films fabricated by PLD are hydrophobic with low surface energy.

Pulsed KrF lasers of two different durations (30 ns, 500 fs) are used to deposit DLCfilms. By optical emission spectroscopy and ion probe, the composite species of laser generated plas-ma plume are identified, the average kinetic energy of ions, the plume flux and their variation with laserenergy density, and the distance from the target are investigated. The relation of the properties of de-posited films with the plasma characteristics is studied.

The reaction of CuI with cinchonine （an organic donor-acceptor chromophore） afforded a homochiral 3D diamondoid network [Cu4I4（cinchonine）2]n （1） containing a cubane cluster （Cu4I4） as a connecting node. This is the first homochiral coordination polymer with diamondoid nets containing a cluster as a connecting note. Its thermal stability and solid state optical properties such as fluorescence, circular dichroism and second-harmonic generation response were also reported.

diamond-like carbon (DLC) films (a-C:H) were implanted by 140 keV and 110 keV Ar ion beams. The resistivities of the implanted films decreased dramatically under a dose of 2×1016 Ar/cm2 . IR spectra and optical gap Eopt were measured. It was found that the sp2 and sp3 components decreased due to the loss of hydrogen during implantation, and the ratio of components sp bonds to sp bonds increased with the ion dose. And the optical gap Eopt decreased from 1.46 eV to 0.83 eV. The hydrogen (bonded and unbonded) contents in the films were measured with the nuclear resonant reaction 1H(19 F, x 7) 16O. It is shown that hydrogen plays an important role in affecting some properties of DLC fims.

In this article, the results obtained from a study carried out on the some elements-incorporated diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are reported. All the films were deposited using plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) technique. The deposited films were annealed at 400℃, 650℃ and 900℃ in an air atmosphere for 1 hour. The effects of adding hydrogen, silicon/oxygen and silicon/nitrogen into the DLC film on chemical composition, friction coefficient and corrosion resistance were investigated. The films coated micro end mills performance was also assessed. The results indicate that all the films showed almost constant atomic contents of C, Si, O and N until annealing at 400℃. However, the films were completely destroyed at 650℃ with the increased Si and O contents, while the C content decreased. The incorporation of silicon/oxygen and silicon/nitrogen into the DLC exhibited lower values of friction coefficients than the hydrogenated DLC (DLC and H-DLC) before and after annealing at 400℃, whereas all the films presented the same values of friction coefficients after annealing at 650℃ due to the completely destroy of the films. Furthermore, the incorporation of silicon/nitrogen into the DLC also exhibited better corrosion resistance and unbroken micro end mills performance on their surfaces. Thus, the incorporation of silicon/nitrogen into the DLC film can be considered beneficial in improving the micro end mills performance.

diamond-like carbon (DLC) is a metastable amorphous film that exhibits unique properties. However, many limitations exist regarding the use of DLC, for example, its tribological characteristics at high temperature, as well as its limited thermal stability. In this study, silicon/oxygen and silicon/nitrogen co-incorporated diamond-like carbon (Si-O-DLC and Si-N-DLC) films are studied, taking into account the thermal stability and tribological performance of these films compared with pure DLC. All the films were prepared on Si wafers, WC-Co materials, and aluminum foils using a plasma-based ion implantation (PBII) technique using acetylene (C2H2), tetramethylsilane (TMS, Si(CH3)4), oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2) as plasma sources. The structure of the films was characterized using Raman spectroscopy. The thermal stability of the films was measured using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). The friction coefficient of the films was assessed using ball-on-disk friction testing. The results indicate that Si-N-DLC films present better thermal stability due to the presence of Si-O networks in the films. The Si-N-DLC (23 at.%Si, 8 at.%N) film was affected using thermal annealing in an air atmosphere with increasing temperature until 500°C. The film can also resist thermal shock by cycling 10 times between the various temperatures and air atmosphere until 500°C. Further, Si-O-DLC and Si-N-DLC films exhibit excellent tribological performance, especially the Si-N-DLC (23 at.%Si, 8 at.%N) film, which exhibits excellent tribological performance at 500°C in an air atmosphere. It is concluded that Si-O-DLC and Si-N-DLC films improve upon the thermal stability and tribological performance of DLC.

The Even-Odd and the Isoelectronicity Rules Applied to Single Covalent Bonds in Ionic, Double-Face-Centered Cubic and diamond-like Crystals

Although atom configuration in crystals is precisely known thanks to imaging techniques, there is no experimental way to know the exact location of bonds or charges. Many different representations have been proposed, yet no theory to unify conceptions. The present paper describes methods to derive bonds and charge location in double-face-centered cubic crystals with 4 and 6 atoms per unit cell using two novel rules introduced in earlier works: the even-odd and the isoelectronicity rules. Both of these rules were previously applied to ions, molecules and some solids, and the even-odd rule was also tested on two covalent crystal structures: centered-cubic and single-face-centered cubic crystals. In the present study, the diamond-like structure was subjected to the isoelectronicity rule in order to derive Zinc-blende structures. Rock-salt-like crystals were derived from each other using both rules. These structures represent together more than 230 different crystals. Findings for these structures are threefold: both rules describe a very sure method to obtain valid single covalent-bonded structures;single covalent structures can be used in every case instead of the classical ionic model;covalent bonds and charges positions do not have any relation with the valence number given in the periodic table.
