An interval of limestone,which generally has a dendroid appearance on outcrops, has been found in several Permian-Triassic boundary(PTB) sections in South China, and interpreted to be *** research has examined the paleontology and sedimentology of the unit,however,little attention has been devoted to its diagenesis. This paper discusses the diagenesis of the microbialites in the PTB section at Laolongdong, Chongqing,South *** of multiple outcrops reveals that the structure in this kind of rock is not always dendroid;in many cases it is irregular in shape,and seldom shows the "up-branching" *** addition,the speckled interval has also been found beneath the dendroid *** outcrop,both the speckled and dendroid rocks consist of the darkercolored areas and the lighter-colored *** of thin sections reveals that the darker-colored areas on outcrops are actually lighter-colored in thin sections,consist of larger crystals,and are more *** lighter-colored areas in thin sections generally consist of large blocky calcite containing scattered small dirty calcite rhombs and irregular residual limestones,which are the same as the lime mudstones between the lighter-colored areas. It is inferred that the dendroid and speckled rocks have experienced the following diagenetic processes:(1) exposure of the carbonate sediments to the subaerial environment because of a sea level drop;(2) dolomitization caused by the downward migration of fluids formed the dendroid and speckled dolomitic patches;(3) dedolomitization of the dolomitic patches formed dendroid and speckled patches of calcite;(4) dissolution occurred in the interstices between relic dolomite crystals formed spongy pores;and(5) filling of the spongy pores by large blocky ***,even though microbes played a critical role in the formation of these microbialites,diagenesis contributed greatly to the formation of the speckled and dendroid pattern of the

Paleoclimate implication of oxygen and carbon isotopic composition from diagenesis coral --Discussion on the data from NY-1 core

Oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of diagenesis?coral samples from NY 1 core at the depth of 22 to 50 m, together with mineral compositions of transitive coral samples of 17 to 18 m at the depth, were meas ured. The data exhibited that when aragonite changed to calcite, its oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions dropped roughly on a linear trend. The linear trend implies that the oscillation pattern of the origin oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios of the aragonite could probably be retained after they diageneticly changed into calcite. Oxygen isotopic stratigraphy for the NY 1 core at the depth between 22 and 50 m was determined according to the δ 18 O ratios of the calcite coral. The oxygen stratigraphy provided an age of about 289 ka for 45 m of the NY 1 core, which agreed with that by paleomagnetic stratigraphy.

Research on Petroleum Reservoir diagenesis and Damage Using EDS Quantitative Analysis Method with Standard Samples

In recent years, the X\|ray spectrometer has been developed not only just in enhancing resolution, but also towards dynamic analysis, computer modeling processing, sampled quantitative analysis and supra\|light element analysis. With the gradual sophistication of the quantitative analysis system software, the rationality and accuracy of the established sample deferential document have become the most important guarantee to the reliability of sample quantitative analysis. This work is an important technical subject in China Petroleum Reservoir Research. Through two years of research and experimental work, the EDS quantitative analysis method for petroleum geology and reservoir research has been established, and referential documents for five mineral (silicate, etc.) specimen standards have been compiled. Closely combining the shape characters and compositional characters of the minerals together and applying them into reservoir diagenetic research and prevention of oil formations from damage, we have obtained obvious geological effects.

On the basis of Ref. [1] entitled "Carbonate eolianites in Putian, Fujian (Ⅰ)——Sedimentary structures and paleowinds", the sediment composition, sedimentary textures and diagenesis of the quartz-calcarenites in Houshijing, Putian, Fujian are described here and compared with those of adjacent modern dune and beach sands, and their genesis and sources of sediment are discussed further. The authors consider that they are carbonate eolianites which were formed by coastal dune sand derived from reworking of adjacent beach sand by prevailing northeast monsoon winds and then cemented by freshwater subaerially during the end of the Middle Holocene.

Microfacies and diagenetic alteration in a semi-deep to deep lacustrine shale: The Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin, China

The mineralogical development and diagenetic sequence of lacustrine shales in the Chang 7 Member of the Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin are detailed studied.A model of their depositional system and a diagenetic diagram are proposed in this *** detailed petrographic,mineralogical,and elemental analyses,four distinct shale types are identified:argillaceous shale,siliceous shale,calcareous shale,and carbonate,clay,and silt-bearing *** main diagenetic process in argillaceous shale is the transformation of illite to smectite,negatively impacting shale *** shale undergoes carbonate cementation and quartz dissolution,contributing to increased porosity,particularly in *** shale experiences diagenesis characterised by carbonate formation and dissolution,with a prevalence of *** carbonate,clay,and silt-bearing shale,the dissolution of K-feldspar contributes to illitization of *** shale,characterised by more clay minerals and lower mesopore volume,is identified as a potential hydrocarbon *** shale,with the highest pore volume and abundant inter-mineral pores,emerges as a promising shale oil *** findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of shale properties,aiding in the prediction of shale oil exploration potential in the studied area.

Diagenetic evolution and reservoir quality of the Oligocene sandstones in the Baiyun Sag, Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea

The Oligocene Zhuhai sandstones are significant reservoirs for hydrocarbons in the Baiyun Sag, South China *** effective appraisal, exploration and exploitation of such a deep-water hydrocarbon sandstone, samples of five wells from depths of 850 m to 3 000 m were studied. A series of comprehensive petrographic and geochemical analyses were performed to unravel the diagenetic features and their impact on the reservoir ***, the sandstones are dominated by feldspathic litharenites and lithic arenites with fine to medium grain sizes and moderate to good sorting. The reservoir quality varies greatly with a range of porosity from 0.2% to 36.1% and permeability from 0.016 ×10~(–3) μm~2 to 4 301 ×10~(–3) μm~2, which is attributed to complex diagenetic evolution related to sedimentary facies;these include compaction, cementation of calcite, dolomite, siderite and framboidal pyrite in eogenetic stage;further compaction, feldspar dissolution, precipitation of ferrocalcite and ankerite, quartz cements, formation of kaolinite and its illitization, precipitation of albite and nodular pyrite, as well as hydrocarbon charge in mesogenetic stage. The dissolution of feldspar and illitization of kaolinite provide internal sources for the precipitation of quartz cement, while carbonate cements are derived from external sources related to interbedded mudstones and deep fluid. Compaction is the predominant factor in reducing the total porosity, followed by carbonate cementation that leads to strong heterogeneity. Feldspar dissolution and concomitant quartz and clay cementation barely changes the porosity but significantly reduces the *** high-quality reservoirs can be concluded as medium-grained sandstones lying in the central parts of thick underwater distributary channel sandbodies(>2 m) with a high content of detrital quartz but low cement.

Facies development and sedimentology of the Middle Miocene carbonates of the Raghama Formation, northeastern Saudi Arabia

Ragahama Formation comprises a siliciclastic continental deposits followed by marine carbonates, representing prograding alluvial fans from adjacent high hinterlands seaward into lagoons and fringing reef environments. The present work aimed to document the facies development and sedimentology of the Raghama carbonates exposed along the eastern coastal plain of the Red Sea, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Four stratigraphic sections were measured and sampled(D1–D4) and thin sections and major and trace element analyses were prepared and applied for petrographic and geochemical approaches. The carbonates were subdivided into three successive fore-reef, reef-core, and back-reef depositional facies. Sandy stromatolitic boundstone, microbial laminites, dolomitic ooidal grainstone, bioclastic coralline algal wackestone, sandy bioclastic wackestone, and coral boundstones were the reported microfacies types. Petrographic analysis reveals that the studied carbonates were affected by dissolution, dolomitization, and aggrading recrystallization, which affects both the original micrite matrix and grains or acts as fracture and veinlet filling leading to widespread vuggy and moldic porosity. No evidence of physical compaction, suggesting rapid lithification and recrystallization during early diagenesis and prior to substantial burial and intensive flushing by meteoric waters. Most of the original microstructure of corals were leached and destructed. This is indicated by the higher depletion in Sr and Ca levels and increase in Mg,Na, Fe, and Mn levels, especially in section D1, in comparison with the worldwide carbonates.
